El Paso sheriff launches 'Safe Streets Operation' for 4th of July holiday weekend
The coordinated holiday operation is part of increased anti-drunken driving efforts since Sheriff Oscar Ugarte and El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson took office in January, including the creation of a sheriff's county DWI Task Force.

"We're not here to ruin anyone's holiday — we want you to enjoy the Fourth of July weekend with your family and friends," Ugarte said in a statement. "But if you drink and drive over the legal limit, know this: you will be stopped, and you will go to jail. My priority is to protect lives and keep our roads safe."
The holiday weekend operation — officially promoted as "Sheriff Ugarte's Safe Streets Operation" — includes the El Paso, Socorro, Horizon City, Anthony (Texas) and Clint police departments, county constables, Texas state troopers and the San Elizario Marshal's Office.
As part of the operation, sheriff's deputies will "maintain a high-visibility presence" to help prevent off-roading crashes and other trouble at the popular Red Sands desert off Montana Avenue, east of the El Paso city limits.
The Montana Vista area east of the El Paso limits annually draws hundreds of revelers for Independence Day because fireworks are banned in El Paso but legal outside city limits.
El Paso County Commissioners Court this year voted to prohibit the sale and use of fireworks classified as 'skyrockets with sticks" and "missiles with fins" in unincorporated areas of the county to help prevent wildfires, the Sheriff's Office said in a news statement.
Other types of fireworks can still be sold.
The city of El Paso reminds residents that it is illegal to use, sell and possess fireworks within the city limits, stated a city news release issued on June 26.
Violations can result in a Class C Misdemeanor citation, with fines typically about $191 and up to $500 depending on a judge's decision, the city stated. Illegal fireworks can also be investigated as criminal mischief or arson, if there are damages. Law enforcement will keep watch for illegal fireworks over the Fourth of July weekend.
Fireworks can pose a fire danger as well as causing distress to neighbors and pets, and can be a trauma reminder for veterans coping with PTSD.
"Fireworks can cause devastating harm — from severe burns and loss of fingers to structure fires that threaten entire neighborhoods," El Paso Fire Chief Jonathan Killings said in a statement. "We've seen how quickly a single spark can lead to tragedy. Please don't risk your safety, your property, or your neighbors' lives. Leave fireworks to the professionals."

Massachusetts woman will plead guilty to leaking sealed federal grand jury information
Jessica Leslie, a 34-year-old Massachusetts woman, has agreed to plead guilty after prosecutors accused her of leaking federal grand jury information to unauthorized individuals. U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Leah Foley and Ted Docks, special agent in charged of FBI Boston, announced charges Tuesday against Leslie, who lives in Dracut. While she was a member of a federal grand jury, Leslie allegedly shared sealed information that included the names of various witnesses, the substance of their testimony, and other evidence. Prosecutors did not specify what case the grand jury was called for. Details were not disclosed regarding who Leslie leaked the information to. The information was allegedly leaked between Aug. 11, 2022 and March 4, 2024. Leslie was charged on Friday with one count of criminal contempt. She was facing prison time, supervised release, and a fine of $250,000 if convicted. Instead, the U.S. Attorney said Leslie agreed to plead guilty and will make an appearance in federal court at a later date. A plea hearing has not yet been scheduled. According to court documents, Leslie's plea agreement includes incarceration for one day that is deemed time served. She would not face a fine if the plea is accepted by the judge. Instead, she would be granted 24 months of supervised release and a mandatory special assessment of $100 that must be paid by sentencing. WBZ-TV attempted to reach Leslie's defense attorney for comment. He said he was in the process of speaking to his client and may have a comment in the near future.

Philadelphia police release photos of 2 suspects wanted in connection with Grays Ferry mass shooting
Philadelphia police released photos of two suspects they're searching for in connection with a mass shooting in Grays Ferry that killed 3 people and injured 9 on July 7. Police described the first suspect shown in the photo below as a male in his late teens or early 20s with a medium complexion, thin build and sideburns. The suspect was last seen wearing a gray head covering, black jacket, white T-shirt, black track pants and carrying an Under Armour backpack. Investigators said the second suspect is also a male in his late teens or early 20s, with a medium complexion and an unkempt afro. This suspect was last seen wearing black track pants, a black shirt and carrying a black Nike backpack with silver bubbling along the straps. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said the mass shooting happened on the 1500 block of South Etting Street just before 1 a.m. on July 7. Later that night, Philadelphia police released a video of three suspects on Ring surveillance who remain at large. Bethel said officers had already responded to the same block late Saturday night into early Sunday. Police made arrests during that earlier incident and continued to monitor the area throughout the weekend. Officers then returned on Sunday after receiving reports of loud music. While responding to a separate incident nearby, officers heard gunfire and rushed back to the block. In total, police said nine victims were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and three others were taken to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. One additional victim walked into the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania's Pavilion Campus. Bethel said at least eight of the victims were taken by police. Police said another victim went to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia but was not shot and only injured from falling to the ground while running away. Bethel said he believes there were around 40 individuals who may have been present at the time of the shooting. He added that there may have been an exchange of gunfire, and dozens of shell casings were recovered from the scene. Police said one person was taken into custody with a weapon, though their role in the shooting is unclear.
