Is George Holani now the favorite for Seahawks' RB3 role?

USA Today3 days ago
There has been some movement for the Seattle Seahawks at running back lately. Third-year pro Kenny McIntosh suffered a season-ending torn ACL injury at a training camp practice. In Thursday's preseason opener versus the Las Vegas Raiders, a 23-23 Week 1 tie, sophomore running back George Holani may have become the new favorite to be RB3 on the roster behind Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet.
Holani rushed for a game-high 61 yards and a touchdown via seven carries. Holani's score was an explosive 24-yard run in the first quarter that opened the scoring. The former Boise State standout averaged 8.7 yards per carry.
McIntosh's injury has created new competition at running back. It was Holani that took full advantage of his opportunity against the Raiders. Meanwhile rookie running back Damien Martinez struggled by comparison.
Martinez rushed for 10 yards via six carries. The rookie ball-carrier out of Miami averaged just 1.7 yards per carry. He was even outperformed by Jacardia Wright, who rushed for 34 yards and a touchdown via seven carries (4.7 YPC).
The Seahawks face a conundrum with Martinez as of now. Do they carry four running backs on the 53-man roster, or does GM John Schneider attempt to sneak Martinez onto the practice squad? As of now, Holani is establishing himself as the RB3.

2025 college football predictions: Air Force, Hawaii are live to win the Mountain West

The college football landscape has completely changed over the last few years, but one thing has remained constant: The Mountain West Conference runs through Boise. Fresh off an appearance in the College Football Playoff, Boise State is the only odds-on favorite in any conference going into the year. The Broncos have won the Mountain West two years in a row, and they've been to the conference championship in seven of the last eight seasons. Anything short of a three-peat would be deemed a disappointment for Boise State, but there are a handful of teams in this region who could give the blue-turfers a run for their money. 2025 Mountain West odds Team Odds Boise State -155 UNLV +650 San Jose State +750 Fresno State +900 Colorado State 14/1 Air Force 16/1 Hawaii 20/1 San Diego State 33/1 Wyoming 33/1 Utah State 50/1 Nevada 75/1 New Mexico 150/1 Odds via bet365 2025 Mountain West best bets, picks, and predictions The Favorite You'd think that Boise State would be projected to take a step back after losing all-world running back Ashton Jeanty to the NFL, but the Broncos are such a machine at this point that they could be better than they were in 2024. Spencer Danielson, in his second full year at the helm, didn't have too many holes to patch up aside from the Jeanty-sized one in the backfield, and he'll have the comfort of knowing that Maddux Madsen will be back under center after throwing for over 3,000 yards in 2024. The departure of Jeanty will put Madsen under more pressure, but he shouldn't have to light it up because the Broncos' defense projects to be a real force in the Mountain West. The Broncos are clearly the best team in this conference, but that doesn't make them a good bet to win the MWC for a third year on the spin. At -155, you'd need to think the Broncos have better than a 60.8 percent chance of winning the Mountain West to start to see value, and that seems a little rich considering the quality of competition around them. Ashton Jeanty is pictured during Boise State's game in November 2024. AP The Dark Horses UNLV's rise in the NIL era has turned heads, and they've got some heavy expectations in Year 1 under Dan Mullen, the former Mississippi State and Florida head coach, despite a massive amount of roster turnover. The Rebels rank 132nd in returning production, but the program won't be in disarray thanks to some deep pockets helping recruit plenty of former blue-chip prospects. Nonetheless, a team fielding upwards of 20 new starters is not one you'd feel comfortable backing as a +650 second favorite in a conference with Boise State. San Jose State is getting some hype as a potential upstart after a strong first season under former Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo, but the price has come down too much since opening to be interesting now. The Spartans are a team worth backing in other ways, however. Fresno State has been a model program in the Group of 5 for years and years, but the Bulldogs have undergone so much change in the past few seasons that it's hard to get excited about backing them at 9/1. Perhaps former North Dakota State head coach Matt Entz gets them rolling in Year 1, but the price isn't for me. Best bets for the Mountain West Anything can happen in the Group of 5, but this isn't the conference where you want to be careful about hunting huge prices. That said, there are two teams in the middle of the board that are intriguing options for a decent payday. Air Force to win the Mountain West (16/1, bet365) First up is Air Force at 16/1. The Falcons looked destined for a terrible campaign in 2024, but they turned a 1-7 record into 5-7 with four impressive victories to close out the season. That was something a lot of bettors put in their back pocket, hoping that the growth that the Falcons showed in the second half will carry over into 2025. Betting on College Football? Momentum from one season to the next is dubious for most teams in this era of college football because of the turnover, but it's different for the Service Academies. The biggest question mark will be at quarterback, with Josh Johnson a relative unknown. If he's able to run the show efficiently, Air Force becomes dangerous in a hurry. Hawaii to win the Mountain West (20/1, BetMGM) This could be the make-or-break year for Timmy Chang at his alma mater. Hawaii has shown some improvements in three years under Chang, but they'll need to make a serious dent in 2025 to keep his seat cool. The good news for Chang and the Rainbow Warriors is that they've got a real shot at making some noise thanks to an easy schedule and a high-ceiling quarterback who is drawing comparisons to…Chang. Hawaii fans got just a glimpse of Micah Alejado in 2024, but the 5-foot-10 quarterback made the most of it, throwing for 469 yards and five touchdowns against New Mexico at the end of the campaign. Alejado will need to be prolific for Hawaii to have a chance, but his pedigree and first impression suggest there's a chance he is just that. Three WNBA players ejected after fiery Sun-Sky scrap

Apparently ejections now comes in threes. A trio of WNBA players earned the boot Wednesday night following an altercation during the Sun's 71-62 home win over the Sky. Connecticut's Bria Harley and Chicago's Rebecca Allen each received ejections for starting the scuffle, while the Sky's Ariel Atkins' night ended early 'for being an escalator' after shoving Hartley and touching a referee, according to crew chief Angelia Suffern as reported by ESPN. Hartley and Allen tangled arms and in the battle for the ball, Hartley seemingly shoved Allen to the floor. Allen attempted to grab Hartley as she fell before later taking a hold of her jersey for several seconds while her opponent stood over her. 5 Atkins (7) approaches Hartley and hits the ref. @UnderdogWNBA/X Advertisement Players from both sides eventually made their way over, with Atkins running full steam into a referee while she attempted to confront Hartley. While said referee attempted to distance Atkins from Harley, she nudged the official. Atkins and Hartley then yelled at one another as the tensions started to calm down. 5 Atkins nudgets the referee. @UnderdogWNBA/X Advertisement The skirmish reportedly stopped play for roughly 10 minutes. Hartley and Allen both did not score in their 10 minutes before being ejected, while Atkins had five points. Sky coach Tyler Marsh called the situation 'unfortunate.' 5 Hartley (l) and Atkins (r) yell at one another. @UnderdogWNBA/X 'I think things like that have a tendency to happen when there's not a control put on the game prior to — there's usually an incident that goes overlooked that leads to something like that,' Marsh said. 'I think [Allen] clearly got elbowed in the face right in front of the ref. It wasn't called. Then, other things ensued. 'It's unfortunate for us. Two players that play high-quality, high-valuable minutes for us, we were down for most of the game. It was tough. I thought the team rallied back, fought hard to finish it out but it's unfortunate.' The ejections left the Sky with just eight players available in the second half due to Angel Reese missing the game with a back injury and Courtney Vandersloot being sidelined with an ACL tear. The Sky (8-24) have now lost 11 of 12, including three straight.

Report: Odell Beckham Jr. 'has drawn interest,' plans to play in 2025

Some things require seeing to be believed. One such thing is the future playing career of receiver Odell Beckham Jr. He has been forgotten since being released by the Dolphins during the 2024 regular season. Recently, he reminded the world that he's still interested in playing, by responding to a fake report indicating that Beckham had retired. Boosting Beckham's claim is this report from Tom Pelissero of NFL Media/ESPN*, which looks and feels like a favor for an agent: 'Three-time Pro Bowl WR Odell Beckham Jr. has drawn interest from several teams and plans to play somewhere in 2025, per source. As OBJ posted himself, he is not retiring, and he continues to train in anticipation of being on the field soon.' If he has drawn interest from several teams, why isn't he on one? Two years ago, the Ravens surprisingly overpaid him $15 million guaranteed on a one-year deal, in a move that may have paved the way to get quarterback Lamar Jackson to agree to terms on a five-year contract. Last year, the Dolphins paid Beckham a fraction of that — and it never clicked. Healthy when released after the trade deadline, Beckham's name was not mentioned once as a candidate to join a contender during the playoff run. Now, nine months after he became a free agent, he's suddenly in demand? Again, we'll believe it when we see it. Beckham started his career with Hall of Fame numbers through three seasons. Then, the decline began. And while Beckham was on track to be the Super Bowl LVI MVP before his knee with a pre-torn ACL gave out, he hasn't had a 1,000-yard season since 2019, his first year with the Browns. Last year, he had nine catches for 55 yards in nine games. It had seemed to be a foregone conclusion that his time in the NFL had ended. Maybe it hasn't. Again, we'll believe it when we see it.
