‘He changed the rules for all of us who came after': Lee Child remembers Frederick Forsyth

I remember two things about the first full week of January 1972. I passed my driving test on the Monday, and on the Friday I made my weekly trip to the library and borrowed The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth. I had no idea I would one day be a writer myself – at that point I was merely an insatiable reader – but in retrospect that Friday marked an important way station on the journey from one to the other. I gobbled up the book and thought it was fantastic – fast, pacy, exciting, suspenseful and laced with detail and intrigue. Then I thought, wait, what? How was this book working? It was a twin-track thriller – an assassin hunts his target while law enforcement hunts the assassin. But the intended victim was Charles de Gaulle, a real person, the president of France, who had died from an aneurysm in 1970. Therefore we all knew the assassin had failed. How did that not short-circuit the will-he-won't-he suspense that thrillers seemed to require? And the main character was an absolute cipher – a completely blank slate. No backstory, no history, no explanation, no reason, no justification. No description. Not even a name. Yet we all rooted for him. We secretly admired him. We wanted him to succeed. How-to books about writing tell us to create sympathetic, fleshed-out characters, and then place them in great peril, and leave the outcome uncertain until the last page. Forsyth ignored all that. In so doing, he showed us that the how question was as powerful as the who, why, where and when. He showed us that intriguing detail and inside information was compelling in itself. He created a year-zero thriller that reset the whole genre. Sign up to Bookmarks Discover new books and learn more about your favourite authors with our expert reviews, interviews and news stories. I met him in the early 2010s and we began hanging out occasionally and corresponding fairly often – he by typed snail-mail, me by email printed for him by his wife. He said he knew he had to write the book because he was unemployed and broke, but at first he had trouble feeling his way into it. He was a journalist by trade, and his lightbulb moment was to imagine he was doing a book-length true-crime feature about recent events. The result was a novel that changed the rules for all of us that came after.

Bunk'd star Skai Jackson, 23, seen for first time since claiming her baby daddy 'slammed her head into a wall'

Hollywood actress Skai Jackson dazzled on the red carpet on Monday evening. The 23-year-old Bunk'd actress wore a pal gray leotard with a sheer skirt that showed off her legs as it fell to the floor. She added to her petite height with seven inch shiny silver platform heels with an ankle strap. And there were no rings on her fingers to make it clear she is a single lady. The former Disney star was a tower of strength at the event as she smiled even though she has recently dealt with a harrowing experience. In mid May she made some heartbreaking claims against baby daddy Deondre Burgin - who is known online as Yerkky Yerkky - in her restraining order. The actress claimed that Burgin, with whom she shares a newborn child, tried to choke her on Mother's Day, according to TMZ. This is the first time Skai has been seen since news of her restraining order broke. The 23-year-old Bunk'd actress wore a pal gray leotard with a sheer skirt that showed off her legs as it fell to the floor And the luminary also alleged that Deondre grabbed her by her hair, slammed her head against a car window and punched her in the face. She had their son Kasai, aged three months, in her arms during the attack, it was also claimed by the star in documents seen by the site. Jackson filed for a restraining order in L.A. County Superior Court as she fears for her life, it was also alleged. She has asked a judge to keep Burgin 100 yards away from her, their baby and her dog. Skai also wants him to attend a domestic violence treatment program, the site also stated. Skai is seeking a legal child support agreement and for him to pay all her legal fees, the site claimed the documents read. The violence was nothing new, the actress claimed, as she added he has been frightening her for more than a year. The TV star also alleged that he abused her weekly during a six-month period in 2024. That included choking and scratching her and slamming her head into a wall, she claimed in her paperwork. Here she is seen in a power pose in front of a white sports car And he allegedly damaged her iPhone and a television. While she was pregnant, Skai claims Burgin demanded she drink bleach to 'kill the unborn child,' the site added. And he 'held her at knifepoint as he walked her to her car and threatened to stab her in the stomach if she yelled for help,' the site claimed. He then punched through a bathroom door, slammed her against a wall and 'choked me until I could not breathe' and she she has video to prove it, she alleged in her documents. He also has guns, she claimed: three firearms, including a rifle. Last year Jackson was in hot water herself when she was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery, but not charged. In September it was revealed that the Los Angeles District Attorney's office declined to file charges and dropped the case against her. She was previously arrested on August 8 at Universal Studios CityWalk in Los Angeles, California after an alleged altercation with her boyfriend. Police responded to a call from the theme park after security personnel detained Jackson for allegedly pushing her boyfriend. Deputies reviewed the surveillance footage of the alleged incident. At the time, her representative told People: 'Skai is relieved that the investigation revealed that this was nothing more than a misunderstanding.' 'We appreciate that the DA determined very quickly that there should be no charges of any kind and Skai looks forward to putting this behind her,' her rep continued. At the time of her arrest, law enforcement sources told TMZ she told the arresting officers she was 'happily engaged and expecting a baby.' The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office informed the outlet that the case will not go forward due to Jackson not having any criminal history. The alleged victim, her boyfriend, dis not have any injuries and had also not been cooperating with prosecutors. Burgin was arrested in April at a gas station in Kentucky on April 17 after a 'police officer recognized him from the National Crime Information Center database.' He is reportedly still being held on a $25,000 bond. Law enforcement in Hamilton County had a 'warrant out for his arrest for failing to display a license plate on his vehicle in March' and failing to show up for his court date. This comes less than three months after he served a 90-day sentence for violating his parole from an earlier theft and weapon possession case as a juvenile at the Hamilton County Jail. Burgin was behind bars when Jackson gave birth to their baby boy, Kasai, in January 2025. In November, one day after Jackson, revealed she was expecting, Burgin was taken into custody in Cincinnati, Ohio after a botched foot chase with officers. At the time, police said in a report, reviewed by TMZ, that Burgin initially fled the scene when they approached him over a juvenile parole violation warrant. Burgin tripped, fell and suffered a cut on his cheek in the encounter, according to the outlet, after which police placed him in handcuffs. Burgin was released after receiving a citation for misdemeanor obstruction of official business, police sources told the outlet. Jackson is best known for her roles on Disney Channel sitcom Jessie and spin-off Bunk'd, both of which ended in 2018. A month after becoming a first-time mom, Jackson gushed to Jackson that she felt 'so amazing.' 'I love being a new mom. It's just so exciting. So exciting,' she said at the 56th NAACP Image Awards Creative Honors. 'I'm here tonight, I'm already missing my baby. But it's been a great month with my new little one.' She also raved about her 'amazing support' system that help her out when Kasai gives her a 'fun for' her money. 'I feel like now I can just do anything,' she added. 'I feel like being a mom and juggling everything probably has to be one of the hardest jobs, but it's such a rewarding job because I'm doing it for him at the end of the day.' Overall, motherhood has taught her that she can 'handle whatever at this point.' Previously, she told People that she was raised by a single mom who 'always taught' her to 'stand up' for herself and 'fight for what is right.' 'I thank her for that because without her, I probably wouldn't have a lot of the confidence that I do now,' she told the outlet in 2023.

Victoria Beckham looked effortlessly chic as she stepped out in Paris wearing an ensemble made up of almost entirely her own brand The Spice Girl, 51, slipped into a smart red shirt and flared indigo jeans from her range as she strutted down the street in the French capital Brooklyn, 26, appeared to make his feelings clear in an Instagram video shared in May, in which he pledged his unwavering loyalty to Nicola, 30 - the daughter of Miami-based billionaire businessman and investor Nelson Peltz. The influencer whisked his wife off for an early morning motorbike ride and captioned the video: 'My whole world x I will love you forever x I always choose you baby x you're the most amazing person i know xx me and you forever baby.' Those close to the Beckhams have now told The Sun that the message seemed 'very pointed'. The insider added: 'It shows how much this situation with his family has escalated. 'It's very sad for everyone involved, especially David and Victoria who love him very much. This isn't the Brooklyn his family knows and loves. 'This post was like a dagger to their hearts but they will always be there for Brooklyn.' Hours after the post, Cruz, the Beckhams' youngest son waded in on the row for the first time by writing an Instagram post in support of his parents, showing he does not side with Brooklyn. The 20-year-old musician wrote: 'I love my family. I love you guys more than anything, mum and dad you gave us life and cared for us no matter what, I cannot tell you how blessed we are to have you in our lives.' David and Victoria have resigned to the fact that they have become estranged from their beloved son after he failed to attend any of the football ace's 50th birthday celebrations last month. 'This post was like a dagger to their hearts but they will always be there for Brooklyn,' a source said on Monday Despite flying to London, Brooklyn and Nicola didn't attend the big family party at the Beckhams' Cotswolds home or an idyllic trip to France or a meal at Notting Hill restaurant, Core. Last month, there was further proof of the irreparable nature of the rift when Brooklyn and Nicola jetted to the capital from their home in Los Angeles for a joint photoshoot with Italian luxury fashion brand Moncler. It took place less than two miles away from the Beckham family home in Holland Park, west London. Brooklyn didn't even tell David and Victoria they were in the country - let alone meet with them. Harper - who turns 14 in July - was exceptionally close with Brooklyn and Nicola, who often shared pictures of her on Instagram gushing over the teen and calling her 'my younger sister'. attend her 14th birthday celebrations.
