Trey Smith avoids tag, agrees to 4-year, $94 million extension with Chiefs
The deal, which makes Smith the highest-paid player at his position, was locked up hours before the NFL's deadline for franchise-tagged players to sign long-term extensions. Before April's NFL Draft, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach told reporters it was 'no secret' the team wanted to sign Smith long term, but the status of those contract negotiations became less clear as Tuesday's deadline approached.

If Smith and the Chiefs did not reach a deal by 4 p.m., the 25-year-old would have been locked into a one-year deal worth $23.402 million, as established by the franchise tag.
Smith and Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins were the only players placed on franchise tags this offseason, but both reached long-term deals with their teams and will avoid playing on the tag for the 2025 season.
Smith skipped all of the Chiefs' OTAs in March but was in attendance for June's mandatory minicamp amid contract negotiations. His presence is crucial as the Chiefs hope to squash the blocking issues on their offensive line that cost them in Super Bowl LIX.
Smith has started every one of the 67 games he's played for Kansas City and has missed only one game in four seasons. In 2024, Smith allowed a career-best 1 1/2 sacks and earned his first Pro Bowl selection. He was a sixth-round draft pick by the Chiefs in 2021.

The tariffs were disclosed alongside Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook, who appeared with Trump to announce plans to invest $100 billion in U.S. manufacturing, on top of the $500 billion committed earlier this year. President Trump's off-the-cuff announcement was light on details. For example, it was unclear whether existing commitments to manufacture in America would be sufficient, or if the president wants chipmakers to make new investments to win an exemption. It also remains unclear whether the tariffs and exemptions apply to electronics that contain semiconductors, or just the chips themselves, according to Jefferies analysts. "We await full details likely in the next week or so before jumping to any conclusions, as it has always been a bad move to extrapolate too much from Trump's words or social media post[s]," said Angelo Zino, senior vice president and equity analyst at CFRA Research. Nonetheless, investors seemed to think Wednesday's announcement removed a significant overhang for semiconductor stocks. The PHLX Semiconductor Index (SOX) was up 1.2% in recent trading. AI chip giants Nvidia (NVDA) and Broadcom (AVGO) were recently both up about 0.5%, though down from their earlier highs, while competitor Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) jumped 5%. Contract chip manufacturer Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSM) also advanced 5%, and manufacturing equipment maker Applied Materials (AMAT) rose more than 2%. Which Chipmakers Will Be Affected? 'From a high level, the 100% headline number seems intimidating, but in practice we expect a much lower impact,' wrote Bank of America Securities analysts in a note on Wednesday. U.S.-based companies with domestic manufacturing capacity, such as Intel (INTC), Micron (MU), and Texas Instruments (TXN), should not be affected by the tariffs, according to Citigroup analysts. And fabless chip designers, including giants Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, and Qualcomm (QCOM), should also be able to avoid the tariffs by contracting with major foundries like TSMC, Samsung, and GlobalFoundries (GFS), all of which have U.S. manufacturing facilities. "If Taiwan Semi does get a full exemption ... it would bode well for the broader tech semiconductor/hardware ecosystem and our positive stance on the space," Zino of CFRA said. Even European semiconductor companies without a U.S. presence are expected to be spared the 100% levy. The EU-U.S. trade deal announced late last month capped semiconductor tariffs at 15% and guaranteed zero-for-zero tariffs for semiconductor equipment makers like Netherlands-based ASML (ASML). European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill on Thursday reportedly said the Trump administration had guaranteed that the 15% cap established by the trade deal would not be overwritten by other tariffs. Travis Hunter to play both ways during Jaguars' preseason opener against Steelers
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen told reporters Thursday that his starters will see the field Saturday in the team's preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. That, of course, includes No. 2 overall pick and two-way star Travis Hunter, who Coen said will in fact play both ways versus the Steelers. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh is taking a different approach. Longtime Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced an extensive list of starters who will be healthy scratches for the exhibition. That group includes quarterback Aaron Rodgers; wide receiver DK Metcalf; tight ends Jonnu Smith and Pat Freiermuth; running back Jaylen Warren; cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey, Joey Porter Jr. and Darius Slay; defensive end Cameron Heyward and linebacker T.J. Watt, among others. "It has nothing to do with injury," Tomlin said. "They need less runway to take off, to be quite honest with you. Because of their experience and where they are in their careers, oftentimes I preserve them through this process while providing more opportunity for those that need more preparation or more opportunity to display their talents and so forth." While fans will have to wait to see what Rodgers looks like in the Pittsburgh offense, it looks like they'll get a glimpse of Hunter on both sides of the ball in Jacksonsville. Hunter, last year's Heisman Trophy winner, is listed as a starting wideout and backup cornerback on the Jaguars' first first unofficial depth chart, which the team released Monday. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound phenom is coming off a prolific final season at Colorado, where he played 753 snaps on offense, 776 on defense and 23 more on special teams in 2024, according to Pro Football Focus. In the process, he caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns, plus he ran for one additional score. At cornerback, he picked off four passes and notably forced a fumble that clinched an overtime victory against Baylor. During training camp, Jacksonville eased Hunter into practicing both positions, allowing him time to fully focus on each playbook before playing two ways in the same day. Coen went on the "The Rich Eisen Show" on Monday and suggested 80% of the Jags' offensive snaps as a potential game-by-game target for Hunter this season, with the hope of him trying to match that snap count percentage on defense as well. "We've done more offense because that was where more of the development was necessary," Coen said Monday of Hunter's work in camp, via "The Rich Eisen Show." "It's so much more natural [for him] to just go walk out on the field and play corner. That's what he's done. He can go do that. Now, there's a lot of checks, there's a lot of calls, there's a lot of different things that go to that. But offensively, we felt like there was a little bit more development that was necessary, and it's a lot more ball — just a lot more scheme and words and calls. "Every single day is completely packed, from the moment that he arrives to the moment he leaves, with making sure that he is meeting with somebody at all times." Eisen proposed that Hunter could even win both NFL Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year awards this season, and Coen agreed that "it's possible." That journey officially begins in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers. But Saturday's preseason game against the Steelers will provide a sneak peek at how Hunter's two-way skill set translates to the NFL.
