Al-Mashat Comments on Outcomes of Development Committee Held during Spring Meetings of IMF & WB
Rana Atef
Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation and Egypt's Governor at the World Bank, affirmed that the Ministry is working in coordination with various ministries to prepare an executive plan aimed at supporting growth and employment rates.
This plan focuses on several key sectors, including foreign direct investment, industrial development and trade, labor markets and employment, in addition to enhancing macroeconomic stability and supporting economic policies in collaboration with the World Bank Group as a knowledge partner.
These remarks came following Dr. Al-Mashat's participation in the Development Committee meetings. The committee was chaired by Mr. Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group, and attended by Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund. The committee is one of the most prominent forums that brings together the Governors of the World Bank to discuss development and international financing issues.
Dr. Al-Mashat added that Egypt places private sector empowerment at the forefront of its priorities within the framework of economic and structural reform. The private sector is considered a key driver of development efforts and employment creation.
She outlined several vital sectors in this context, including tourism — which provides millions of job opportunities — as well as industry, particularly non-oil value-added manufacturing, and agribusiness.
Minister Al-Mashat also pointed to efforts by the ministry to enhance its partnership with the World Bank by leveraging the Joint Capital Markets Program (J-CAP) to support local capital markets, in cooperation with the International Finance Corporation (IFC). She noted several ongoing programs with international financial institutions, in partnership with the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (MSMEDA), aimed at supporting and growing this sector and increasing financing opportunities for various companies.
The Development Committee's conclusions emphasized that the World Bank Group's strategic direction is to create jobs by encouraging entrepreneurship and fostering private sector development.
It stressed the necessity for a three-pronged approach to support private sector development and job creation: establishing employment-supportive infrastructure, strengthening governance and business-enabling policies in collaboration with governments, and stimulating the mobilization of private capital. The World Bank considers accelerating job creation a top priority.
The committee also highlighted the importance of enabling the private sector to create more jobs by improving supportive policies and establishing a stable regulatory environment that allows the sector to operate efficiently.
It emphasized investment in human capital through proper nutrition, healthcare, education, and skills development, along with mobilizing private capital to create more and better-quality jobs.
Special attention was also given to developing micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), which represent about 90% of all companies and employ nearly 75% of the workforce in emerging markets and developing economies.
The committee's conclusions also underscored the importance of private sector financing and the need to expand the scope of the Joint Capital Markets Program (J-CAP), which is the World Bank's main tool to support local capital markets, by intensifying its activities and broadening its engagements.

Egypt ready to support counter-terrorism efforts in Sahel region: FM Abdelatty to Nigerian counterpart - Foreign Affairs
Egypt is ready to support counter-terrorism efforts in the Sahel region, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told his Nigerian counterpart, Yusuf Tuggar, during a phone call on Saturday. The two ministers discussed developments across Africa and the need to deepen cooperation within the African Union (AU) to promote peace and security, particularly in the increasingly volatile Sahel. According to a statement from Egypt's foreign ministry, Abdelatty affirmed Cairo's commitment to assisting Nigeria through capacity-building programmes, including joint efforts with Al-Azhar to combat extremist ideologies. The ministers also explored ways to enhance bilateral ties. Abdelatty highlighted both countries' shared interest in expanding economic, trade, and investment cooperation, focusing on agriculture. He also noted the growing presence of Egyptian companies across Africa and expressed Cairo's interest in developing new joint investment opportunities that would benefit both nations. The two officials also exchanged views on developments in the Middle East, especially the war on Gaza. Abdelatty briefed Tuggar on Egypt's ongoing efforts to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and facilitate the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid. Additionally, Abdelatty condemned Israel's continued violations of international and humanitarian law, accusing Tel Aviv of pursuing a 'policy of arrogance' against Palestinian civilians in defiance of international calls for an end to the war and urgent access to aid. Ronaldo Declines Brazil's Fluminense Offer to Participate in 2025 FIFA Club World Cup
Rana Atef On Saturday, media reports indicated that Cristiano Ronaldo turned down the opportunity to play for Brazilian side Fluminense in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Fluminense President Mario Bettencourt confirmed that the club reached out to Ronaldo to join the team ahead of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Bettencourt shared the details on the Setor Sul podcast, saying, "I have a relationship with Jorge Mendes (Ronaldo's agent), but it's not very close. I asked him if there was any possibility of Cristiano playing in the Club World Cup, and he was very clear in stating that he is not interested in playing for any Brazilian club at the moment." Rumours had circulated last month that a Brazilian club had approached Ronaldo for a potential move, especially given that four Brazilian teams—Palmeiras, Botafogo, Flamengo, and Fluminense—are participating in this year's Club World Cup. Mendes' comments suggest that Ronaldo is not considering any of these four Brazilian clubs for the prestigious tournament, effectively ruling them out if he plans to feature in the global event. read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan
