Stella applauds Norris' grit after Canada disappointment

TimesLIVE14 hours ago

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella praised Lando Norris' character as the Briton bounced back from a collision and race retirement in Canada to lead home a McLaren one-two at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday.
The Italian said Norris still "to polish a few things" to become the finished article in a Formula One season turning into a two-horse drivers' title chase with team mate Oscar Piastri.
Norris had to fend off the Australian to set up Sunday's victory two weeks after his clash with his team mate forced him out in Montreal.
"The outcome (in Canada) was unfortunate because Lando could not finish the race. That was simply a misjudgment. The way Lando handled that, I think showed the character," said Stella.
"The speed is there. Lando pole position in Monaco. He was the faster car in Canada, pole position in Austria.
"We have to polish a few things in executions and results ,which is what Lando demonstrated today. Very proud of Lando, very proud of how everyone handled the situation in Canada and the fact we end up united and stronger."
The runaway constructors' championship leaders avoided another on-track accident, with Piastri delivering a mea culpa over team radio after the chequered flag after a near collision.
"There was only one situation where the two cars ended up a little too close and that was in turn four when Oscar locked up and he ended up very close to Lando," said Stella.
"We gave Oscar the feedback and I want to acknowledge I am proud of him. As soon as he crossed the finish line he went on the radio and he said sorry for the situation in turn four.
"I am so refreshed by how the team reviewed the situation in Canada. We have come out stronger and more united."
Norris' win cut the gap with Piastri at the top of the drivers' standings to 15 points ahead of a home British race next weekend.
Norris, seven times a race winner, has yet to take back-to-back wins in the same F1 season, but Stella expects him to rectify that.
"In terms of Lando being able to do so, yes, of course," he said.
"There is absolutely no reason why not. The talent, the quality, the race craft and even the trajectory Lando is in.

Carlos Alcaraz survives Fabio Fognini scare to open 2025 Wimbledon account

Carlos Alcaraz celebrates after winning a point against Fabio Fognini during their men's singles first-round match at Wimbledon. "First of all, I don't know why it is probably Fabio's last Wimbledon because the level he has shown shows he can still play for three or four more years," Alcaraz said. Alcaraz shrugged off an inconsistent display including 62 unforced errors as he refused to wilt on the hottest opening day in Wimbledon history. It was the first time since Roger Federer narrowly beat Alejandro Falla in 2010 that a defending champion had been taken to a fifth set in the Wimbledon first round. Alcaraz battled to a 7-5, 6-7 (5/7), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 win over the 38-year-old Italian in a first-round clash lasting four hours and 37 minutes in sweltering conditions on Centre Court. Carlos Alcaraz survived a major scare in his Wimbledon opener against Italian veteran Fabio Fognini on Monday before coming through in five sets to launch his bid for a third straight title at the All England Club. "Playing on Centre Court for the first match of any tournament is never easy. I've been practising pretty well and playing on grass really well, but Wimbledon is special and different. "I could feel the difference between Wimbledon and the other tournaments. I just tried to play my best but I would say that I could play better." The 22-year-old secured a crucial break in the second game of the deciding set, roaring "vamos" after saving two break points in the next game. Fognini had given Alcaraz a much sterner test than expected, but the world number 138 ran out of steam as the indefatigable Spaniard once again showcased his final set prowess. Alcaraz has never lost in a Grand Slam first round in 18 appearances. Having vanquished Novak Djokovic in the past two Wimbledon finals, Alcaraz is looking to join an elite group of Wimbledon icons. His clay-court credentials are firmly established after he fought back from two sets down to beat Jannik Sinner in an epic French Open final earlier this month. Alcaraz is equally dynamic on grass, winning 30 of his 33 Tour-level matches on the surface, with his last defeat at Wimbledon coming against Sinner in the fourth round in 2022. He is bidding to become the fifth man in the Open Era to win at least three consecutive Wimbledon titles after Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and seven-time champion Djokovic. If he achieves that target, Alcaraz would be the second-youngest player in the Open Era to win six Grand Slam men's titles after Borg, who reached that landmark in 1978. He will face British qualifier Oliver Tarvet in the second round. "He is playing great tennis on grass and if he is in the second round of Wimbledon then he is playing at a great level," Alcaraz said. "I will try to improve the things that didn't work today, such as the return and the forehand. Let's keep enjoying being at Wimbledon as well." AFP

Former Ferrari boss Montezemolo becomes a McLaren Group director

Former Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo has joined the board of historic rival McLaren, a move that would have been unimaginable not so long ago. A filing with Companies House by Abu Dhabi-owned McLaren Group Holdings, which controls Woking-based sports car maker McLaren Automotive, registered Montezemolo as a director on June 27. The 77-year-old Italian joined Ferrari in 1973 as founder Enzo Ferrari's assistant and became team manager in 1974, a year before the late Austrian triple champion Niki Lauda secured his first title. He also presided over the Formula One team during a golden era when Michael Schumacher won five of his career seven titles between 2000-2004 and served as chair of both Ferrari and parent Fiat. McLaren and Ferrari, the two oldest and most successful teams in Formula One history, have been rivals for decades and were involved in a notorious "Spygate" scandal that erupted in 2007. British-based McLaren were stripped of all their championship points and fined a record $100m (R1.77bn) over a dossier of stolen Ferrari technical documents found in the possession of McLaren's chief designer. Both Ferrari and McLaren are under different management now, with Montezemolo resigning his roles at the Italian luxury sports car maker in 2014 and focusing on other business interests. CYVN, majority-owned by the government of Abu Dhabi, created McLaren Group Holdings in April after completing its acquisition of McLaren Automotive. The group includes a non-controlling stake in McLaren Racing, the Formula One team whose majority shareholder is Bahrain's Mumtalakat and which operates completely independently. Paul Walsh, executive chair of McLaren Racing, is also one of the nine directors of McLaren Group Holdings, while McLaren team principal Andrea Stella previously worked for Ferrari. McLaren are the reigning Formula One constructors' world champions while Ferrari last won a title in 2008. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who took his first title for McLaren in 2008, is now driving for Ferrari. News of Montezemolo's new role was greeted with some amazement in Italy. 'Montezemolo-McLaren: What a slap in the face to Ferrari,' said sports newspaper Tuttosport in a headline.

Springboks will use their URC experience to defuse powerful Italy scrum, says Jan-Hendrik Wessels

Jan-Hendrik Wessels is expecting a fierce scrum battle from Italy this weekend in the first Test against the Springboks. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Springbok utility forward Jan-Hendrik Wessels says the homework done on Italian players during the United Rugby Championship (URC) will assist the Boks' preparations for Saturday's first Test against Italy in Pretoria. The Italian national team draws predominantly from Benetton and Zebre. The latter enjoyed one of their better URC campaigns this season, winning five matches to finish 15th, while Benetton ended in 10th place. 'I faced Zebre Parma and Benetton, and we did our homework on those players then, so we know the emphasis they place on the scrums,' said Wessels, who scored a try against the Barbarians last week in what was his fourth appearance for the Springboks. Next Stay Close ✕ 'Zebre had one of their best seasons this year and beat a few big teams in the competition, so we are expecting a proper battle against Italy. Both Italian teams like to feed off their scrums – they get a lot of energy from them. It is a good base for them to play off. They scrum for penalties. They don't scrum to get away from it.' Wessels noted that Benetton, in particular, thrive on extended scrummaging battles. 'Last year, before the November Bok tour, we played Benetton and they had a big focus on scrumming long. They want to stay in the scrums – they don't run away from it. They are up for the fight.' Comfortable at both loosehead prop and hooker, Wessels said he is happy to play wherever required. 'I don't have a preference. Wherever coach Rassie picks me for the team, I am happy to play. As long as I can contribute, there is no issue for me.' The grind continues for the #Springboks (and it's great to welcome Boan Venter to camp) 💥🤝#ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) June 30, 2025
