Students in debt from online gaming turn to ‘digital arrest' scam

The Hindua day ago
Three students who fell into debt after gambling on online gaming platforms were arrested by Hyderabad cybercrime police in connection with 'digital arrest' scams. The case came to light after they cheated a government employee of ₹6.5 lakh.
The accused, all in their early twenties, allegedly supplied over 40 bank accounts to cyber fraudsters in exchange for commission, said an officer. 'They were approached by scammers on WhatsApp and agreed to assist in laundering funds after incurring losses in online betting,' said the officer.
Those arrested have been identified as K. Hemanth Reddy, 21, from Anumula in Nalgonda district, M. Yeswanth Reddy, 21, of Kambalapally village, and M. Tharun, 22, a resident of Karkhana, Secunderabad.
Their fraud came to light after a 57-year-old government employee from Dhoolpet received a phone call in January 2025 from someone claiming to be a Deputy Commissioner of Police. The caller falsely accused him of involvement in a ₹2 crore money laundering case, alleging that his Aadhaar number had been used to open a suspicious bank account.
Fake arrest warrants, RBI notices, and Supreme Court authorisations were sent to the victim over WhatsApp. Under pressure, the victim was instructed to disclose his banking details and transfer funds to prove his innocence. Believing he was facing imminent arrest, he ended up transferring ₹6.5 lakh. When communication ceased, he realised he had been conned.
Cybercrime police said the trio's bank accounts were used by the main fraudsters to receive money from victims via RTGS and NEFT transfers. They received a commission for each transaction.
'This type of fraud, known as a 'digital arrest' scam, typically involves fraudsters impersonating police officers and threatening targets with legal action. Video calls featuring people in police uniforms are used to pressure victims into compliance,' said the officer.
Citizens are urged to report cyber fraud by dialling 1930 or visiting www.cybercrime.gov.in.

Ahmedabad Police Removes, Distances Itself From Posters Discouraging Women From Going Out at Night

One of the posters – which have sparked public anger – advises women not to attend parties at night lest they are raped or gangraped. Representative image of police officers. Photo: PTI. New Delhi: Ahmedabad's police has taken down public posters advising women not to attend parties or go to secluded places at night lest they be 'raped or gangraped', it said, adding that it had nothing to do with them. At least two posters put up by an organisation named the Satarkta Group in Ahmedabad had sparked anger over the last few days. One of them advised women to 'not go to parties at night' as they could be 'raped or gangraped'. Another poster, which read that it was 'sponsored' by the Ahmedabad city traffic police, told its male audience not to take their women friends 'to secluded places in the dark', going on to ask: 'what if they are raped or gangraped?' Safin Hasan, deputy commissioner in the Ahmedabad police's traffic branch, said in a statement on Saturday (August 2) that the authorities immediately took the posters down after learning about their 'objectionable' content. When they looked into the matter, it was found that while the Satarkta Group was granted permission to put up posters on traffic awareness, 'it went outside this remit' in installing the posters concerned, he claimed. Police lodged a report on the matter with the aim of finding out whose permission the posters were installed with and whether the city municipal corporation's approval had been taken, Hasan said, adding that it will take legal action if criminal intent was discerned. 'The Ahmedabad police and the Ahmedabad city traffic police have no connection with these posters. The comments on the posters are contrary to our modus operandi and values,' he also said. Opposition parties criticised Gujarat's BJP government for the posters. 'The police has put up a poster saying 'stay at home in order to stay protected from rape'. When there was opposition [to the posters], then they took them down and are now clarifying that they didn't put them up … In BJP-ruled states, where daughters should benefit from safety and justice, such crimes are being encouraged with such statements,' Congress leader Alka Lamba said at a press conference. The Aam Aadmi Party said as per PTI that the posters 'express the reality of Gujarat'. The Wire is now on WhatsApp. Follow our channel for sharp analysis and opinions on the latest developments.

His Facebook and email IDs were created in Dubai, and the email ID linked to his bank account was being operated from the Philippines. 'In just one month, transactions totalling over ₹3.46 crore were observed in the accused's account. He also lured labourers in Chhattisgarh into selling their bank accounts for ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh, which he later used for fraudulent transactions,' SSP Bhullar said. Nandi, who was on the run for a long time, had been hiding in the Naxal-affected Dantewada region. After monitoring his movements using technical surveillance, Nandi was arrested from Chhattisgarh's Bhilai. He was brought to Dehradun on transit remand, the officer said. SSP Bhullar said that police began investigating after a retired Subedar Major of the Army Medical Corps lodged a complaint in 2024, stating that he was cheated of ₹34.17 lakh in the name of investment with a foreign investor company, Apollo India Private Equity (IV) (Mauritius) Ltd. The complainant was convinced to fill a registration form and eventually invested a total of ₹34.17 lakh in multiple transactions. A mentor named John Peter Hussain also conducted trading sessions with him,' SSP Bhullar said. 'Relevant data regarding bank accounts, WhatsApp communications, and mobile numbers were obtained through correspondence with banks, service providers, and Meta. The data analysis revealed the name of the accused behind the fraud. His email ID was operating from the Philippines, while his social media accounts were Dubai-based. Money from the victim's account was traced to further layers and withdrawn in Dubai,' SSP Bhullar added. A First Information Report (FIR) was lodged, and a team led by Sub-Inspector Rajesh Dhyani began investigating.
