Anifah Aman eyes Bongawan state seat
The Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) president made the announcement via Facebook yesterday, stating that his decision is not aimed at merely challenging the incumbent, Dr Daud Yusuf.
"I respect him as a colleague. However, the people of Bongawan want development equivalent to that of a full-fledged district.
"This has long been promised, and it should already have been enjoyed, but it is still not felt.
"Basic facilities such as a hospital, fire station, road connectivity, and other infrastructure are still neither planned nor championed. It remains quiet and neglected.
"Where is the political will that was once proclaimed?"
As for the seat distribution, the former Kimanis member of Parliament said the state election is not a contest over who gets the most seats, but about who can win.
He added that the legitimacy of the government depends on how many seats are won.
In the last state election, PCS contested in 73 state seats but lost all.
Other component parties in GRS are Parti Bersatu Sabah, Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku Sabah, Sabah Progressive Party, Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah and Liberal Democratic Party.
He added that PCS's struggle within GRS is clear — to uphold the shared cause for collective victory.
"The focus is not on the number of candidates, but on winning seats for GRS.
"All GRS component parties must maintain unity for political stability and the benefit of the state and its people,".
He said that the people must be confident that GRS is a strong, solid local coalition, and worthy of being re-elected to continue Sabah's progress.

Shahelmey weighs GRS ticket after BN door ‘closes'
Last Sunday, GRS chairman Hajiji Noor hinted that Shahelmey Yahya might contest under the GRS banner to defend his Tanjung Keramat state seat in the next Sabah polls. KUALA LUMPUR : Sabah deputy chief minister Shahelmey Yahya is weighing the possibility of contesting under Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming state election, with his chances of standing again as a Barisan Nasional candidate possibly over. Shahelmey, who currently holds the Tanjung Keramat seat, said his decision would ultimately hinge on feedback from voters in the constituency. 'I need to listen to the people in the area because they are the ones who will be voting. There is also the local machinery whose views I must consider. 'If the feedback is convincing, then we will make a decision,' he told FMT when met at the Parliament building. GRS chairman Hajiji Noor had earlier expressed confidence that Shahelmey could defend the seat under the coalition's banner. Shahelmey first won Tanjung Keramat on a BN ticket in 2020. However, his ties with BN have soured since March 2023, when Umno suspended him for six years for refusing to support the party's move to topple Hajiji. The rift widened last year after Sabah BN chief Bung Moktar Radin named Sabah Umno election director Jeffrey Noh as the coalition's candidate for Tanjung Keramat, effectively sidelining Shahelmey. '(It's as if) the door has closed,' Shahelmey said of his BN prospects. He said there had been no discussions with Sabah BN or coalition chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi regarding his candidacy. Shahelmey said his decision on whether to contest on a GRS ticket was further complicated by his position as Umno's Putatan MP. Under the anti-hopping law, he risks losing his parliamentary seat if he contests under a party other than BN as he won Putatan on a BN ticket in the 15th general election. 'That matter is quite technical. I will make a decision later,' he said, without elaborating.

PBS champions local resurgence, grassroots strength in Kiulu
Published on: Wednesday, August 20, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 20, 2025 By: R Gonzales Text Size: PBS members chanting the slogan 'Kaino Kiulu, Jalan Terus' during the party's 40th Annual General Meeting for the Kiulu Division. KIULU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) continues to position itself as a driving force for reform and resilience among local-based political parties in Sabah, drawing strength from its deep-rooted grassroots foundation since its establishment. PBS Information Chief and Kiulu Division Head, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, said the party has remained undefeated in Kiulu since 1985 — a testament to the enduring support it enjoys from the community. Advertisement 'As the longest-surviving local political party in Sabah, PBS in Kiulu serves as an inspiration for the resurgence of local parties across the state,' he said, adding that the party's legacy remains relevant today because it adapts to current realities rather than relying solely on past achievements. Speaking at the 40th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the PBS Kiulu Division, Joniston reminded members that the party's journey is a reflection of the people's aspirations and must continue to evolve by embracing new ideas while staying rooted in its core struggle. The AGM was officiated by PBS Secretary-General Datuk Julita Majungki on behalf of the party's Acting President, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam. Also present were PBS Deputy Presidents Datuk Seri Jahid Jahim and Datuk Seri Dr Yee Moh Chai; Gagasan Rakyat Sabah Kiulu Division Head, Datuk Janih Bangud; and STAR Kiulu Division Head, Terence Sinti. Joniston, who also serves as the Kiulu Assemblyman, recalled PBS President Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili's reference to the 'Kiulu Charge' — a phrase symbolising the division's unwavering grassroots support, which he said must now be infused with inclusivity and innovation. 'While Dr Ongkili was referring to Kiulu, the same spirit runs across PBS throughout Sabah,' he noted. Joniston emphasised that PBS's role within Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) extends beyond being just a coalition partner. 'The real strength of any coalition lies in stability and harmony. As a key partner in GRS, PBS contributes by safeguarding unity. But let there be no misunderstanding — loyalty does not mean being a mere 'yes boss',' he said. 'In Kiulu and across Sabah, our resilience remains strong. Those who understand PBS know that our loyalty is earned, not blind,' he added. He reaffirmed PBS's commitment to keeping local voices central in all levels of decision-making, especially as Sabah undergoes economic, social, and political transformation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Anwar meets Hajiji and Zahid
Published on: Wednesday, August 20, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 20, 2025 Text Size: Anwar (right) during the meeting with Zahid (left) and Hajiji. Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasised that close cooperation between state and federal leaders is essential to ensure the aspirations of the people are realised in a comprehensive and inclusive manner. The Pakatan Harapan (PH) Chairman said he had held a meeting with Barisan Nasional (BN) Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, conducted in a harmonious atmosphere marked by camaraderie. Advertisement 'This meeting reflects political maturity and a commitment to strengthening cooperation to ensure the country's stability, particularly in the context of relations between the Federal Government and Sabah. 'I believe political stability is a crucial foundation for advancing development agendas and safeguarding the welfare of the people,' he said in a Facebook post. Anwar, who is also PKR President, expressed hope that this spirit of consensus will continue to underpin stronger national unity, leading to a progressive, just and prosperous future for all in Malaysia. PH is in separate pacts with GRS and BN for the Sabah election, as the two coalitions have refused to work together despite Anwar's urging. Sabah BN previously said any form of cooperation with GRS would only be considered after the outcome of the state polls, which must be held by December. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
