Former Jacksonville Jaguars first round draft pick signs with Falcons

Former Jacksonville Jaguars first-round pick CJ Henderson has landed with a new team. According to Ian Rapoport, Henderson is signing with the Atlanta Falcons. Rapoport adds that Henderson picked the Falcons "over several suitors." Henderson was the Jaguars' first-round selection and the ninth overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft out of Florida. After spending his rookie year with the Jaguars, Henderson was traded to Carolina early on in the 2021 season. He appeared in only 10 games with Jacksonville, making one start. Henderson was with the Panthers for the 2022 and 2023 seasons as well, totaling over 1,100 defensive snaps during that span. In 2024, Henderson was with the Pittsburgh Steelers but didn't see any regular-season snaps on defense. For his career, Henderson has played in 49 games and made 32 starts with three interceptions and 16 passes defensed. Red Sox's Trevor Story Predicted to Make $55 Million Decision After Injuries

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Boston Red Sox have surged since freeing themselves of the biggest albatross contract on their books. The team traded away franchise slugger Rafael Devers as well as more than $200 million left on his contract and, somehow, improved in the standings. It holds a slight lead over the rival New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card race thanks in large part to a strong young core of controllable talent. But there are still some veteran stars with hefty contracts on the roster. Alex Bregman is on a three-year, $120 million deal, although he's almost certain to opt out of that contract after a very strong year. And shortstop Trevor Story has a six-year, $140 million contract, though he's likely to stick with it even after his own resurgent season. "This is Story's best and healthiest season," Mike Axisa noted for CBS Sports. "Story, 33 in November, can opt out of the final two years and $55 million remaining on his contract." (Photo by) More Sloter/Getty Given that he's batting .256 with 18 homers and 20 stolen bases so far this year, which are all his best marks since first signing his deal with the Red Sox, perhaps Story is tempted to return to free agency for a final chance at a significant new contract. But Axisa predicted he would steer clear of his opt out, given his lengthy injury history. "I have a hard time believing he will pass that up, especially since he would open himself up to a pre-signing physical as a free agent after having major elbow and shoulder surgery within the last 2 1/2 years," Axisa wrote. It seems likely that the remaining $55 million he's owed from the Red Sox would at least match anything else he might find on the open market, particularly if an injury evaluation scares off other teams. The Red Sox also have a $25 million club option on his deal after that, though it would take a remarkable resurgence for exercising that to become a realistic decision down the line. In LA battle, Angels overcome Ohtani, knock Dodgers out of first place

File Photo by Tannen Maury/UPI | License Photo Aug. 14 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Angels scored four runs off Shohei Ohtani to help complete a sweep, while knocking the rival Los Angeles Dodgers out of first place in the National League West. The 6-5 setback Wednesday in Anaheim, Calif., paired with an 11-1 San Diego Padres victory over the San Francisco Giants, gave the Padres a one-game lead in the National League West. Just six weeks ago, the Dodgers held a nine-game lead atop the division. With their victory, the Angels also picked up their seventh consecutive win over the Dodgers, setting a Freeway Series record. "We are where we're at," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters. "We put ourselves in this spot. I wouldn't have expected us to be in second place right now." Ohtani got the Dodgers off to a strong start with a leadoff triple off Angels starter Kyle Hendricks. He came around to score when shortstop Mookie Betts singled three pitches later. With his first hit, Ohtani became the first pitcher since 1900 to lead off an MLB game with a triple. Dodgers catcher Will Smith smacked a 407-foot, two-run homer later in the inning for a 3-0 Dodgers lead. The Angels, who failed to score in the bottom of the first inning, broke through against Ohtani in the second. Left fielder Taylor Ward started the rally with a 375-foot leadoff homer. Infielder Luis Renfigo plated third baseman Yoan Moncada with an RBI sacrifice fly three at-bats later. Betts gave the Dodgers a cushion with an RBI single in the top of the fourth. Angels relief pitcher Ryan Zeferjahn walked Smith with the bases loaded in the same inning for a 5-2 Dodgers lead, but the visitors didn't score again. Angels shortstop Zach Neto raked a two-run double off Ohtani in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the deficit to one. Catcher Logan O'Hoppe hit two-run single off Dodgers reliever Edgardo Henriquez in the eighth to give the Angels their final advantage. Angels reliever Kenley Jansen retired the Dodgers in order in the top of the ninth to secure the three-game sweep. Ohtani went 1 for 4 with three strikeouts, a walk and a run scored. He allowed five hit and four runs over 4 1/3 innings. He also issued seven strikeouts, including two to former Angels teammate Mike Trout. Betts was the only Dodgers player with multiple hits. He went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Hendricks allowed six hits and five runs over 3 1/3 innings for the Angels, but was not on record for a decision. Zeferjahn, Jansen and fellow Angels relievers Andrew Chafin, Reid Detmers and Brock Burke combined to allow just one hit over 5 2/3 shutout innings. The Dodgers will host the Padres in a battle for first place at 10:10 p.m. EDT Friday in Los Angeles. The Angels (59-62) sit in fourth place in the American League West, nine games behind the division-leading Houston Astros (68-53). They will take on the last-place Athletics (54-69) at 10:05 p.m. Friday in West Sacramento, Calif.
