Lazio top Europa League group stage despite defeat at Braga
BRAGA, Portugal, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Lazio finished top of the Europa League group stage despite a 1-0 defeat at Sporting Braga on Thursday as the Portuguese side failed to secure a playoff spot.
Braga opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Ricardo Horta fired into the bottom corner from Victor Gomez's cross.
The Italian side battled to maintain their unbeaten run after the break, but failed to penetrate Braga's organised defence.
Lazio's first defeat in their European campaign left them top on 19 points, level with Athletic Bilbao but ahead on goal difference.

He is the latest striker to rebuff the Middle East league with Manchester United and Arsenal still keen. The Swede is one of Europe's most sought after strikers after breaking the 50 goal barrier with Sporting Lisbon. He's been tipped for a Premier League move but he was recently offered the chance to land fortunes by moving to the Saudi Pro League. Al-Hilal, who have just appointed for Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi as manager, had been looking to land Victor Osimhen. However the Nigerian knocked them back after his loan stint at Galatasaray with his parent club, Napoli, looking to cash in. That led the Saudis to turn their attention to Gyokeres but the Swedish frontman has also said no to a lucrative offer. He could've earned an annual salary of £30m but wants to continue competing in Europe, reports L'Equipe. It means both Arsenal and United are free to pursue a move for the 27-year-old, who previously played in England for the likes of Swansea and Coventry City before his career was transformed by Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese boss is looking to bolster his forward line and could pursue a reunion with Gyokeres. It is understood that Sporting would sanction his sale for around £60m - despite looking for more so far this window - and the player himself is open to the move despite them not having Champions League football. Arsenal have been touted as his other option. It is well documented that the Gunners want a No.9 but their preference looks to be Benjamin Sesko at RB Leipzig with discussions ongoing over a move for the Slovenian. Nottingham Forest write to Uefa over Crystal Palace Europa League concerns
Nottingham Forest have written to Uefa to express their concerns about Crystal Palace qualifying for the Europa League with a decision expected by the end of this month as to whether they should be expelled. There have been suggestions that Brighton & Hove Albion, who would enter the Conference League in place of Forest if they are therefore promoted, have also complained to European football's governing body. But Telegraph Sport understands this is not the case. Uefa are set to inform Palace whether they are in breach of their multi-club ownership rules by June 30 – although the matter may then be taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport which would delay a final verdict. The FA Cup winners met Uefa officials last Tuesday in a two-hour meeting in an attempt to avoid being barred from European competition because John Textor, the American businessman who has a 43 per cent stake in the club, also owns French club Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League. Palace insist there are no sharing of information or staff or facilities with the French side. The club argue that despite Textor's shareholding he has no say in the day-to-day running and has just 25 per cent of voting rights. Indeed Textor has previously spoken about his annoyance at the lack of say he has at Palace and has been trying to sell his shares. Textor reiterated this after last week's meeting in Nyon. However, Forest have now written a letter to Uefa expressing their position and asking for clarification over whether Palace will be involved. However, in a further complication, Palace's Europa League place could also depend on whether Uefa decides to allow Lyon to take part in the competition next season. Uefa's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) disqualified Lyon from European competitions in December but allowed them to continue after the club met certain demands. However, Lyon are being 'carefully monitored' by the CFCB and if they are deemed to be in breach of a settlement agreement they could be disqualified from next season's Europa League in any case which would automatically earn Palace a reprieve. On the other hand Lyon's involvement, if Palace are thrown out, will heighten the likelihood of the latter turning to CAS. At the same time Forest could also turn to the Swiss-based adjudicators if they are not satisfied with Uefa's decision. It, therefore, appears to be a legal minefield. Palace may well have fallen foul of Uefa's rules because clubs have to establish separate ownership structures before March 1 if they hoped to play in the same competition in the following season. Matters are further complicated because one option for Uefa to consider is to demote Palace to the Conference League as a form of punishment. That is believed to be unlikely, however, as it may lead to further appeals. Palace have strongly refuted any wrongdoing and have attempted to comply with Uefa's rules as quickly as possible having won the first trophy in their history. Evangelos Marinakis, the Forest owner, who also owns Greek club Olympiacos, diluted his stake by placing his shares in a blind trust to ensure there was no conflict when it appeared they would qualify for the Champions League.

Che Adams relieved to break Scotland goal curse as George Hirst makes striker's job 'easier'
The Torino frontman hadn't scored in more than a year before netting a hat-trick in the 4-0 demolishing of Liechtenstein Hat-trick hero Che Adams ended his Scotland goal drought in style and then set his sights on the World Cup qualifiers. The striker netted a hat-trick as Scotland beat Liechtenstein 4-0 in Monday night's friendly in Vaduz. The Torino star netted his first international goal for more than a year and then went on to net a treble. Now he wants to keep that red-hot form into the World Cup qualifiers, which start in September against Denmark. Adams beamed: 'Yes, honestly amazing. It's always a pleasure to put on this shirt and score. 'It's been so long since I scored in the shirt. So to score one and eventually get two more was amazing and a nice way to sign off the season.' Adams had finished as Torino's top scorer and he acknowledged drawing a blank for his country was weighing heavily on his shoulders. He claimed: 'Obviously as a striker it's always in the back of your mind. As a striker, you're the one to put the ball in the net. It was made a bit easier playing with two strikers. 'We were able to keep a constant threat in behind, putting them under pressure. I fully enjoyed it and hopefully we can build off this now into the qualifiers.' Adams netted his first international treble and now has a nice memento from his big night. The former Birmingham City forward admitted: 'Yes, I got it (the ball) signed from all the boys. I've had four or five, but I can't remember the last one. 'Obviously, it's a nice little touch to finish off the season and get some well-deserved rest." Scotland haven't qualified for the World Cup since 1998 and that is something Adams and his team want to address. It is 88 days from Tuesday until the action starts away to Denmark. He warned: 'Obviously, to put things right against Liechtenstein today, following the poor result against Iceland. It's going to come short and sharp. Yeah, exactly. It's been a long time (since we made a World Cup). 'But I think everyone's mentally preparing now, from today really to look forward to those games and get back into playing in those competitions.' Adams is following in the footsteps of the late, great Denis Law for club and country. He recently broke his Italian scoring record and is also making an impact for Scotland. He said: 'A lot of people were saying that actually over there (beating Law's record). As I said, I'm delighted to have finished top scorer for Torino. I love it. 'I think it's going to be difficult for anyone to go to a different country, different culture and different league. For me to do that, a lot of people say it's brave, but it's something that I felt comfortable with doing. 'I've enjoyed every minute of it and hopefully I can build off this season and go again next season. But as I said, today was icing on the cake. Just to get the three goals and build off this into the qualifiers.' Adams has been part of a successful Scottish surge in Italy. Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour won Serie A with Napoli, Lewis Ferguson lifted the Coppa Italia and Josh Doig also won promotion back to the top-flight with Sassuolo. Adams joked: 'No, I don't know. We're always speaking about the league and how difficult it is and how tactically different it is. I think everyone's enjoyed it. 'Everyone's had respectable seasons. Especially the boys, obviously, that won trophies and Doigy, the one that got promotion. 'I think everyone's building and learning and putting themselves into these situations that not many people would. 'I think we're coming out with a lot of rewards from it.'
