McDonald's Announces Breakfast Menu Change
The new menu items include the Spicy McMuffin, Spicy Sausage McMuffin, and Spicy Sausage McMuffin with Egg — all featuring the restaurant's new Spicy Pepper Sauce, the company said in a press release.
The nationwide offering coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Egg McMuffin, the sandwich credited with ushering in the chain's now-famed breakfast service.
Breakfast menus have become a crucial battleground for fast food brands, with U.S. consumers increasingly seeking novel flavors and limited-time options.
The new sandwich highlights McDonald's efforts to capitalize on the "spicy" food trend, which has seen increased popularity across American fast food menus.
Industry analysts have noted that menu additions can drive short-term sales and boost brand engagement during seasonal promotions.
The new sandwiches maintain the core elements of a McMuffin — cheddar cheese, a freshly cracked egg, Canadian bacon or sausage, and a toasted English muffin — but incorporate McDonald's signature Spicy Pepper Sauce. This blend offers "a fiery, delicious twist," the company said.
McDonald's also said that its U.S. eggs are now "100% cage-free," which is part of its broader ingredients update that aims to align with consumer demand for animal welfare.
The menu change marks the 50th anniversary of the Egg McMuffin's nationwide rollout. Herb Peterson, a former McDonald's franchisee in Santa Barbara, California, created the sandwich in 1971 with the aim to produce a portable version of eggs benedict.
The innovation eventually gained national attention, notably through the efforts of McDonald's founder Ray Kroc, and played a pivotal role in establishing breakfast as a major sales segment for the chain.
Spicy flavors have become a focal point for fast food innovation, with multiple chains introducing heat-centric menu items to appeal to evolving consumer palates. McDonald's expansion into spicier breakfast options reflects a broader industry movement and an effort to differentiate its morning menu.
McDonald's USA President Joe Erlinger said in a press release earlier this year: "At McDonald's, breakfast isn't just a meal; it's a cherished tradition and cornerstone of our brand... Every morning when we open our doors, we are a breakfast restaurant. Whether it's my personal favorite, the Egg McMuffin, or our crispy Hash Browns, fluffy hotcakes, or sweet and savory McGriddles, we're all about giving our customers the best start to their day. Our fans know they can always count on us for a one-of-a-kind breakfast experience, anchored in great value and high-quality ingredients."
David Peterson, son of Herb and a McDonald's owner/operator, said: "When I watched my father introduce this idea to Ray Kroc, we could not have anticipated it would become the foundation for the renowned McDonald's breakfast menu... It's been remarkable to see people embrace this innovation over the last five decades, and now we get to share that heritage with a new generation of breakfast fans."
Availability of the new breakfast sandwich may vary by location depending on franchise participation.
McDonald's urged customers not to delay, saying: "The Spicy McMuffin won't last forever."

Cracker Barrel faces new 'woke' backlash over DEI policies
Backlash to corporate diversity, equity, and inclusion policies has led to several major companies downplaying their DEI programs in got the ball rolling in January 2025 as it ended some of its DEI practices and renamed its diversity team as "Global Inclusion team."The company also faced a lawsuit filed by the American Alliance for Equal Rights, objecting to McDonald's and International Scholarship & Tuition Services' HACER National Scholarship Program and asking that its scholarship recipients be chosen on their "own merits and essential qualities," since it believes the scholarship unlawfully discriminates against students from other races and ethnicities. And now, popular dining chain Cracker Barrel is facing an attack on its diversity, equity, and inclusion policies from legal advocacy group America First Legal, a conservative nonprofit co-founded by White House aide Stephen Miller. America First Legal requested that the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmenti investigate Cracker Barrel for alleged potential violations of federal and state civil rights laws stemming from its diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, according to a July 21 AFL statement. It did not take traditional sausages off its menu; it only added a meat-free choice, and that angered some of its customer base, which called for boycotts. Cracker Barrel launched its Diversity and Inclusion Strategy in June 2021, which included an effort to "better identify, recruit and advance strong, racially and ethnically diverse talent," WMAL Radio reported. The restaurant chain also asserted its support for the NAACP and Urban League, as well as doing more to recognize the LGBTQ+ community, in its Diversity and Inclusion Strategy. The company in 2024 shifted its Diversity and Inclusion Strategy to Culture and Inclusion, focusing on "Culture," "Workforce," and "Business." Cracker Barrel's Culture and Inclusion Strategy is a 180-degree turn from the company's policies in early 1991, when the company adopted a policy to stop hiring LGBTQ people and terminate those who were already employed by the restaurant chain, according to Forbes. The company's Board of Directors voted to end discrimination against gay employees in 2002. "Treating employees differently because of their race or sex is not only wrong, it is illegal and violates numerous federal and state civil rights laws. AFL will continue to fight back against unlawful discrimination in all its forms," American First Legal said in its statement. The organization submitted a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, to investigate Cracker Barrel's employment practices, which they allege "appear to discriminate against employees or prospective employees, solely because of their skin color or sex." American First Legal also filed a complaint with the Tennessee attorney general, as well as the Cracker Barrel Board of Trustees. Cracker Barrel was not immediately available for comment. McDonald's (MCD) Targets Gen Z with Colorful Cold Brews and Dirty Sodas
Fast-food chain McDonald's (MCD) is getting ready to go beyond burgers and fries by testing a new line of colorful iced drinks this fall, according to The Wall Street Journal. The menu will feature items like Creamy Vanilla Cold Brews, Popping Tropic Refreshers, and 'dirty sodas' mixed with flavored syrups and dried fruit. Starting in September, about 500 restaurants in Wisconsin and Colorado will offer the drinks. This shift is part of a bigger trend in the fast food industry, where premium beverages are driving growth for rivals, especially as Gen Z customers look for fun and unique drink options. Interestingly, drinks have become one of the fastest-growing parts of the restaurant business, especially as inflation causes people to spend less on full meals. Indeed, research firm Technomic reported that beverage- and snack-focused chains saw nearly 10% sales growth in 2024, compared to 1.4% growth for burger-focused chains. Drinks also tend to bring in higher profits. As a result, McDonald's believes that the drink market could be worth $100 billion across the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Europe. Unsurprisingly, the company's latest plan builds on what it learned from CosMc's, which was an alien-themed spinoff that it launched in 2023 to test specialty drinks. While some items, such as the Churro Cold Brew Frappé, were popular, others failed to connect with customers, and McDonald's ended the concept in May 2025. Nevertheless, McDonald's new drink strategy includes simpler customization options and different flavors for international markets. With competitors also releasing new drinks, McDonald's says it wants to move quickly to claim its spot. Is MCD Stock a Good Buy? Overall, analysts have a Moderate Buy consensus rating on MCD stock based on 14 Buys, 13 Holds, and two Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. Furthermore, the average MCD price target of $335.87 per share implies 13.7% upside potential.

McDonald's to test drinks from shuttering CosMc's spinoff at some restaurants
McDonald's is planning to test a new lineup of drinks inspired by its shuttering spinoff brand, CosMc's, at some restaurants later this summer. The fast food giant announced July 25 that roughly 500 select restaurants in some states will be part of an expanded market test for the drinks. The drinks will be aimed at "blending the best of CosMc's creativity with the convenience you know and love." Some of the drinks that will be in the lineup include a Creamy Vanilla Cold Brew and a Strawberry Watermelon Refresher, McDonald's said. CosMc's is a spinoff concept McDonald's announced in 2023 and rolled out last year. In May, McDonald's said it would be closing its five CosMc's locations, in states including Texas and Illinois, but that it planned to test some of the drinks in its regular restaurants. When is McDonald's introducing CosMc's drinks menu? McDonald's said it will begin rolling out market testing of the CosMc's drinks on Sept. 2. It's unclear how long the test will run for. Which CosMc's drinks will be tested at McDonald's? McDonald's said it's planning on including about 10 drinks in the test. Five were teased in the July 25 announcement, including: Which McDonald's will have CosMc's drinks? About 500 restaurants will be included in the market test, McDonald's said. It includes restaurants across Wisconsin, Colorado and the surrounding areas, according to the chain. McDonald's operates more than 14,000 locations in the United States. What is CosMc's? What to know about McDonald's spinoff brand CosMc's is a spinoff restaurant concept owned by McDonald's. While McDonald's launched five CosMc's in 2024, the company previously announced all of them would close on a rolling basis beginning this past June. The name and futuristic aesthetic of CosMc's was inspired by a mascot of the same name who appeared in ads in the late '80s and early '90s. CosMc's menu primarily features beverages including coffees, teas and frozen drinks. Soft-serve ice cream, sandwiches and small food items are also available.
