Element debuts two films at Cannes to critical acclaim
Both films received strong critical praise and have been described as standout titles mid-way through the festival.
Pillion, based on the novel Box Hill by Adam Mars-Jones, tells the story of a shy man, played by Harry Melling, who is drawn into a submissive relationship with a charismatic biker, played by Alexander Skarsgård.
Vanity Fair called it "a disarmingly poignant drama of discovery", while The Guardian awarded it four stars, describing it as "brilliant" and "what Fifty Shades of Grey could have been".
Producer Emma Norton said: "The reception to Pillion is such a testament to Harry Lighton's wonderful warmth and intellect. There was so much laughter and emotion in the room, and we're thrilled that Pillion has been embraced by the critics and Cannes audience."
My Father's Shadow, the first Nigerian film ever to premiere at Cannes, is a semi-autobiographical drama set in Lagos during the 1993 Nigerian election crisis. Screen Daily described it as "a thrillingly vital account of the moment when everything changes", while Deadline called it "a moving universal story".
Producer Rachel Dargavel said: "Akinoa and Wale have created a beautiful, poetic evocation of fatherhood set against political turmoil in '90s Lagos. We are also so proud to be involved with the first Nigerian film in Official Selection."
Pillion is an Element Pictures production financed by BBC Film and the BFI, in association with Fremantle, Picturehouse Entertainment and September Film. It will be released by A24 in the US, Picturehouse in the UK and Ireland, and in September in Benelux.
My Father's Shadow is an Element Pictures production in association with Crybaby and Fatherland Productions. It was developed and co-financed by BBC Film and the BFI.
Both films will be released internationally later in 2025 and early 2026.

'Echoes of the Isles' celebrates heritage of Atlantic islands through art
A new exhibition, 'Echoes of the Isles', will run in Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Galway city library from August 18-22, as part of National Heritage Week. Funded through the Heritage Stewardship Fund by the Heritage Council, the collaborative project highlights the cultural and ecological heritage of Ireland's Atlantic islands through contemporary visual art and digital heritage. Róisín Doherty - Clocha Tite, 2025 'Echoes of the Isles' features new work by artists Róisín Doherty and John Flynn, both of whom draw inspiration from the interwoven themes of landscape, folklore, archaeology, and memory. Their work aims to bring attention to both the tangible and intangible aspects of island life, exploring how tradition, nature, and community interact in these unique environments. Róisín Doherty, originally from Cruit Island, Co. Donegal, is a Co. Galway-based artist whose multidisciplinary approach combines drawing, painting, sound, photography, and found objects, is one of those featured. A recent graduate of the MA in Creative Practice at ATU Galway, she has exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, otherwise known as COP26, in Glasgow. Her contribution to the project reflects on the fragile machair habitats and the erosion of traditional island life, offering a poetic and immersive engagement with Ireland's coastal ecology and cultural heritage. John Flynn, a visual artist from Cork, creates work that blends mythology, archaeology, and the natural world. Influenced by Ireland's deep tradition of storytelling, he provides new visual interpretations of ancient narratives, using his practice to bridge past and present in fresh and accessible ways. John Flynn - Inchagoill 12th century doorway, 2025 The 'Echoes of the Isles' will be overseen by ATU's Gary Dempsey, a digital heritage expert at the School of Design & Creative Arts and a member of ATU's heritage research group. Inspired by the work of 19th-century antiquarian artists whose field drawings accompanied archaeological exploration, he sees art as a powerful means of communicating heritage to the wider public. Dempsey said: ''Echoes of the Isles' is about reconnecting people with place. 'It honours the knowledge embedded in island landscapes and shows how artistic practices can make that knowledge visible and shareable.' The exhibition provides a window into Ireland's island heritage, raising awareness of the islands' ongoing transformation, and the value of safeguarding their stories, species, buildings, and traditions. Visitors are invited to consider the importance of heritage not just as history, but as something alive and continually shaped by community, environment and creativity. Kerry Icons celebrates Kingdom greats, past and present
At just 22, the Kerry-based artist has gained recognition for his unique graffiti realism style, using aerosol spray paint on recycled materials. Kerry Icons features 50 near-photorealistic portraits of influential Kerry figures—from writers and athletes to actors and activists—sprayed onto repurposed vinyl records sourced from local charity shops. Subjects include cultural icons like John B. Keane and Peig Sayers, sporting legends such as David Clifford and Mary Jo Curran, and internationally renowned actors including Jessie Buckley and Michael Fassbender. 'This collection celebrates those who have shaped Kerry's identity,' Paul said. 'It honours both well-known and forgotten heroes who've made a lasting impact locally and beyond,' he added. The exhibition is presented by the Department of Culture in partnership with Kerry County Council. Minister Patrick O'Donovan will officially launch the project. The event is open to the public, and all are welcome to attend. Michael Moore of the Department of Culture added, 'We're delighted to host this powerful exhibition, which highlights the depth of Kerry's cultural influence.' Kerry Icons is open Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm, and admission is free.

Now, fans will be pleased to here that it'll be back on screens in a special Hollyoaks episode that will honour the predecessor. Hollyoaks took over as Channel 4's flagship continuing drama when the Liverpool-based soap ended on November 4th 2003. And as part of the exciting crossover, fans will see Brookside characters make a return as a treat to mark the milestone. Executive Producer Hannah Cheers said: 'This episode is a love letter to both Hollyoaks and Brookside. 'Brookside gave birth to Hollyoaks — it grew up on the same site and eventually took over its sets. 'For everyone at Lime Pictures (originally Mersey TV), Hollyoaks' history is deeply rooted in Brookside, and its legacy lives on through our crew and, of course, some of our cast. 'This special feels like both a moving and fitting tribute to our origin story and a chance for fans to revisit much-loved Brookside characters in honour of that legacy. Aside from that kiss between Beth Jordache and Margaret Clemence, it had some iconic storylines before it came to an end in November 2003 - including the incestuous love affair between brother and sister Nat and Georgia Simpson. Sir Phil said: 'It is always bitter sweet thinking back to Brookie, the reminders of its success and impact, but the thoughts of many, like Dean Sullivan and Bill Dean, who are no longer with us. 'But it is great that Lime Pictures are paying homage in their Hollyoaks anniversary cross over episodes. 'I can't wait to see how all the gardens are coping in the heatwave and, who knows, what might pop up if someone decides to re-lay their patio. I know we left something else down there.'
