UP: 4 arrested for running over Dalit woman for objecting to rash driving in Bulandshahr
The Uttar Pradesh Police have arrested four men for allegedly running their SUV over a group of Dalits, who objected to their alleged rash driving in Bulandshahr, The Indian Express reported on Friday.
A woman, Sheela Devi, was killed and four others were injured in the incident, which took place on Tuesday.
The Dalit family was resting outside their home when a group of men from the Thakur community drove past them, the newspaper quoted the first information report as saying.
The 62-year-old woman's son, Bhupendra Kumar, told The Indian Express that the family was resting outside the home because there was no electricity and that it was 'not as if they were in the middle of the road'.
Kumar said that he, his mother and three family members were sitting outside their home when a car allegedly rushed past them very close. 'The car barely missed our feet and a few of our animals that were on the road,' Kumar was quoted as saying.
He said that he had shouted at the vehicle, asking the driver to drive slower, the newspaper reported.
The car stopped and two men who were in the vehicle allegedly made casteist remarks at Kumar. They left following a brief argument, The Times of India reported.
Six men carrying weapons returned to the site in an SUV and allegedly ran over the crowd gathered in the area, according to the FIR.
'They drove at full-speed…the car stopped after running over my mother and then it reversed in high-speed over her again,' The Indian Express quoted Kumar as having alleged.
His mother died on the spot. Kumar and three of his family members were taken to hospital.
On Tuesday night, the police arrested the car's driver Priyanshu Thakur and Atul Thakur. Manav Thakur and Krishna Thakur were arrested the next day. Three suspects – Tapesh Thakur, Varun Singh and Ashu – are absconding, the newspaper reported.
Shanker Prasad, the Bulandshahr (city) superintendent of police, told The Times of India that the suspects have been booked under sections of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita pertaining to murder, attempt to murder, criminal intimidation and rioting.

PU admissions continue under strict document verification
Patna: Patna University (PU) colleges continued to admit students to their undergraduate academic programmes for the second consecutive day on Saturday, as per the first merit list released by the university. The admissions from the first merit list will conclude on Monday. PU students' welfare dean Anil Kumar told this newspaper that admissions are being made under the tight scrutiny of the members of the respective college admission committees. "All the candidates are being directed to furnish at least three separate undertakings at the time of securing their admission to a college. By seeking these undertakings from students, the university wants to ascertain that only genuine candidates are admitted on the production of genuine certificates and documents," he said. Students must submit an undertaking to the effect that the certificates and documents being submitted by them are genuine. If, on verification, any of the certificates is found to be 'forged', the provisional admission of the candidate will be cancelled. The candidates are also being asked to submit another undertaking stating that they will not engage in any unlawful activities on the campus at any time. If they are caught engaging in such activities, stern legal action will be taken against them. Additionally, they are being directed to furnish yet another undertaking to the effect that they will not involve themselves in ragging. "If they are found involved in any sort of ragging on the campus, they will be liable to punishments, including expulsion from the college or imprisonment as per the UGC rules," the dean said. As per PU admission rules, candidates selected for admission are going to the allotted college along with the allotment letter downloaded from the PU website ( and all the required documents and certificates for admission. "They have been informed that if they fail to report at the allotted centre on the given date and time, they will forfeit their claim for admission and the seat will be allotted to the candidate next in merit," Kumar said. The university has, however, provided for automatic upgradation (sliding up) of a candidate's rank in the merit list if some candidates figuring at the top do not turn up for their admission. "In that case, the admission of a candidate already secured in an institution or some subject will be cancelled and fresh admission will be made on the upgraded position," he added. Gujarat teen shot video to show friends planes flying overhead — the crash left him traumatised
Standing on the terrace of a three-storey building where his father stayed, Aryan Asari watched with amazement as the planes flew by overhead, seemingly within touching distance. Visiting his father in Ahmedabad's Laxminagar area, close to the airport, the Class 12 student decided to shoot a video of one of these planes and send it to his friends back home in a village in Aravalli district. It was this very video — showing the Air India plane struggling to stay in the air and eventually crashing in a massive fireball — that would go viral globally, becoming the subject of analysis by everyone from crash experts to police. Aryan, however, found himself traumatised and struggling to sleep at night. On Saturday, police took him away from the Ahmedabad house, both to seek details about the video and keep him out of the media spotlight. Earlier in the day, Aryan told a local channel that he had shared the video with his father as well as on his Instagram account as a story. He said he was too scared to ever step foot on an airplane ever again. Raj Singh, 16, who was with Aryan when he shot the video, said that this was the first time the boy and his sister were visiting the rented apartment where their father, a retired army officer who now worked as a metro supervisor, had been staying for the past six months. 'He came around noon and was amazed when he saw planes fly so close overhead as the area is in the flight path. The planes fly so close, one almost feels that one can touch it. I was also standing on the terrace and we got talking. He said he wanted to show his friends how close he was to the planes and started shooting them on his phone,' Raj, who resides in the same building, told The Indian Express. 'As soon as the Air India flight came, he started shooting it when the plane started going down. He asked me why it went down and assumed it would land. However, when we saw the ball of fire, he rushed back to his room. He did not go to the spot where the plane crashed, something most of us did,' said Raj. Aryan later sent the video to his father who initially did not believe his account, said Sunita Singh, another building resident. She said: 'His father told him to stay indoors and not talk to anyone. The father may have shared the video which then went viral.' 'From early morning on Saturday, mediapersons started coming in even as the father was away at work. He returned and asked the media to leave. He told them their son was scared ever since the incident. Every time a plan passed by, which was every few minutes, he started panicking. He was hardly able to speak,' she said. Later, a team from the Ahmedabad crime branch reached the spot and whisked him away. Police later clarified that they had not detained him but were simply getting details about the video. When The Indian Express visited the building, the house was locked. An official said that Aryan and his sister had been sent to a relative's place as per instructions by senior officials. Basirhat police in Bengal arrest 22 ‘Rohingya people' living in under-construction house
Basirhat police in West Bengal on Friday arrested 22 people, including two pregnant women, alleged to be Rohingya after they recently started living in an under-construction house in Baduria. Sources with the police said that on Friday, residents of Labanga village under Sayestanagar Gram Panchayat in Baduria noticed that some people were staying in an under-construction house in the area. They approached the occupants of the house and questioned them, following which it emerged that they were Rohingya. Subsequently, the villagers detained all of them and informed the police. Officers arrived soon and arrested them, sources said. Hossain Mehedi Rehman, Superintendent of Police (SP), Basirhat, said, 'We arrested all 22 suspects. We are investigating why they came here and what their identity is.' A senior police officer said, 'Women and children are also there in the group. Two women are pregnant. Some of them also have refugee cards.' According to the Baduria police, when the accused were questioned, it came to light that they had infiltrated into India from Bangladesh more than 10 years ago. They then went to Hyderabad and worked as daily-wage labourers and ragpickers. During the last one month, when local residents there started identifying them as Bangladeshi immigrants, the group fled to West Bengal, planning to make their way back to Bangladesh through illegal means, officers said. Till then, they planned to stay at the under-construction house. Panchayat member Hakim Sheikh said, 'Residents felt suspicious seeing strangers in the area in a large group. We informed the police and administration. The police then arrested all of them.'
