Who is Rose Tyler? Billie Piper's character in Doctor Who universe

Hindustan Times31-05-2025
Fans of Doctor Who got a massive surprise in the series finale when Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor regenerated into Billie Piper. That's right: the beloved actress, best known to Whovians as Rose Tyler, stepped back into the TARDIS 'one more time'. But who exactly is Rose Tyler, and why does her return matter so much?
Rose Tyler, introduced in 2005 when the show relaunched after a long hiatus, was the first companion of the modern Doctor Who era.
Billie Piper starred alongside Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor and later David Tennant's Tenth, and quickly became a fan favourite. Her character was an ordinary shop girl from London who became special through her travels across time and space.

Piper played Rose for two full series. Her final full appearance in 2006 broke hearts as Rose was trapped in a parallel universe. She returned for brief cameos and specials later, but fans never stopped asking: could Rose ever come back for real?
'Just how and why she [Billie Piper] is back remains to be seen…' the BBC teased.
'It's no secret how much I love this show,' Piper said in a statement, 'and I have always said I would love to return to the Whoniverse as I have some of my best memories there, so to be given the opportunity to step back on that TARDIS one more time was just something I couldn't refuse, but who, how, why and when, you'll just have to wait and see.'
Even the episode credits read, 'Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor. Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor. And introducing Billie Piper.'

Showrunner Russell T Davies added fuel, stating, 'Billie once changed the whole of television, back in 2005, and now she's done it again! It's an honour and a hoot to welcome her back to the TARDIS, but quite how and why and who is a story yet to be told. After 62 years, the Doctor's adventures are only just beginning!'

Miracle in medical world! Baby born from 30-year-old frozen embryo — doctors say it's like a Sci-Fi movie

A baby boy named Thaddeus Daniel Pierce was born to a couple in Ohio from an embryo that was frozen for over 30 years, possibly setting a new world record. Lindsey Pierce, 35, and Tim Pierce, 34, had tried to have a baby for seven years before they adopted the embryo, which was originally created in 1994. The baby was born from an embryo that belonged to Linda Archerd, 62, who made it with her then-husband through IVF three decades ago. Back in 1994, Ms Archerd created four embryos — one became her daughter, and the other three were kept frozen in storage for years, as per the report by BBC. She spent thousands of dollars each year to keep the embryos stored, hoping to find a good family one day. She finally chose to use a Christian embryo adoption agency called Nightlight Christian Adoptions, through their 'Snowflakes' program. This program lets donors pick the family and even set preferences like religion, race, and nationality — Ms Archerd wanted a married, Caucasian, Christian couple from the U.S, as stated by the report by BBC. The IVF procedure was done at Rejoice Fertility in Tennessee, which said they try to transfer any embryo, no matter how old. Ms Pierce said they weren't trying to break any records, they only wanted a baby and were lucky to be chosen. Doctors say this is the longest an embryo has ever been frozen before leading to a live birth — the last record was in 2022 with twins from embryos frozen in 1992. Prince Harry's ‘desperate' attempt at reconciliation: Offers to share his official schedule

Image credits: Getty Images The news that Prince Harry wants to reconcile with his family, at least his father, is not new. The Duke of Sussex even told the BBC that he "would love a reconciliation" with the Royal Family. However, his most recent olive branch has many confused and questioning King Charles' response. According to the UK's Daily Mail, Prince Harry quietly extended a hand forward to the royals by offering to share his official schedule of engagements. As per the outlet, this would help ease tensions between him and his father, King Charles III, who is known to be battling an undisclosed form of cancer. The sharing of the schedule will allow more transparency and help avoid conflicts between the engagements of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the British royal family. Additionally, it will also squash any rumours that the estranged pair is trying to overshadow the royal family. "Harry is now desperate," British royals expert Hilary Fordwich told Fox News Digital. "While this self-serving gesture is notable, it won't do much to mitigate suspicion and caution on the royal side," Fordwich claimed. "King Charles III is now more guarded than ever, indeed somewhat traumatized by a string of betrayals." Image credits: Getty Images He also noted that according to palace insiders, the king "has expressed being 'cautious and wary' regarding fearing further unsavoury leaks, (especially) private royal family gatherings being publicised yet again." Prince William's camp is still doubtful of the younger prince, he added. "He considers any reconciliation at all as a 'grave mistake.' His senior royal courtiers are understood to be just as wary and immensely protective of the future monarch. They only see [a reconciliation] as creating more bombshells, as well as instability." "The only way for Harry to ever have any chance of repairing this ghastly rift is by his actions," Fordwich insisted. "Harry would have to show discretion for many years to demonstrate any respect at all for protocol, privacy, as well as the family institution." In addition to a smooth schedule of events, Harry sharing his diary could also spark conversations about the father-son duo meeting in person again. They met briefly last in 2024 after Buckingham Palace announced the monarch's cancer diagnosis. While things might not get sunny immediately, royal experts state that the move can be a positive one in the long run. "This represents a gesture of goodwill," said royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams to Fox News Digital. "The Sussexes should always respect the royal calendar, where natural care is taken to avoid clashes whenever possible. … This is a practical move that will be appreciated. It appears the Sussexes are getting some good advice. "

‘Pure lack of talent': Trump says Stephen Colbert's show axed due to $50 million loss; Kimmel and Fallon next in line ?

US President Donald Trump claimed that he played no part in the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, but suggested that the long-running host was axed due to a 'pure lack of TALENT' and mounting financial losses. 'Everybody is saying that I was solely responsible for the firing of Stephen Colbert from CBS, Late Night. That is not true!' Trump wrote in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Tuesday (local time). 'The reason he was fired was a pure lack of TALENT, and the fact that this deficiency was costing CBS $50 Million Dollars a year in losses — And it was only going to get WORSE!' Trump, also went on to suggest that other late-night hosts would soon meet a similar fate. 'Next up will be an even less talented Jimmy Kimmel, and then, a weak, and very insecure, Jimmy Fallon. The only real question is, who will go first? Show Biz and Television is a very simple business. If you get Ratings, you can say or do anything. If you don't, you always become a victim. Colbert became a victim to himself, the other two will follow.' Trump's post followed CBS's announcement last Thursday that The Late Show would end in May 2026, marking the close of a 33-year run. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo According to BBC, the network called this move 'purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night [television]' and insisted it was 'not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters.' Colbert, who broke the news to his audience during a taping of the show that evening, was met with boos and cries of 'no' from the crowd at the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York. 'I do want to say that the folks at CBS have been great partners,' BBC cited the host. 'It's not just the end of our show, but it's the end of The Late Show on CBS. I'm not being replaced. This is all just going away,' he said. 'It is a fantastic job. I wish somebody else was getting it.' Colbert took over the programme from David Letterman in 2015 and became one of Trump's most prominent critics in the late-night television sphere. The cancellation came two weeks after CBS parent company Paramount settled a lawsuit filed by Trump. The president had accused the network of deceptively editing a 60 Minutes interview with his 2024 rival, Kamala Harris, to 'tip the scales in favour of the Democratic party.' Colbert's show was has long been criticised by conservative commentators over alleged political bias. According to MRC NewsBusters, a right-leaning media watchdog, the programme hosted 176 liberal guests and only one Republican between 2022 and 2025. The 61-year-old presenter's frequent jabs at Donald Trump have fuelled speculation that the cancellation may have had political undertones, despite the agency citing financial reasons. The end of The Late Show also comes amid ongoing merger talks between Paramount and Skydance Media, a deal that would need federal government approval. If the show concludes as planned in 2026, CBS will be left without a late-night comedy programme for the first time since 1993.
