
The town where pensioners are boycotting self-checkouts
The one manned checkout, however, has a queue several-people deep. 'If there's someone on the till, I would rather wait four or five minutes to have a conversation,' says Antony James, a 59-year-old resident.
His sentiment is shared by many in the Somerset town where the Bridgwater Senior Citizens' Forum has launched a rebellion against automated checkouts.
'The face-to-face checkout tills might be the only conversation some people have all day,' says Glen Burrows, a member of the group leading the boycott.
Admitting that she now is applauded by the till workers when she goes to pay for her shopping, the 75-year-old adds that her main reason for starting the campaign was to highlight the importance of protecting jobs.
Ms Burrows, one of 20 pensioners in the forum, launched the campaign to boycott self-service checkouts in January after 'going into Asda, and finding there was nobody on the tills'.
Over the coming weeks, the group, whose ages range from 70 to 90, plans to distribute leaflets and build momentum through word of mouth. 'I think it's quite a difficult battle,' says Ms Burrows, 'but it's a very important one to fight'.
The campaigners argue that the automated checkouts are costing the people of Bridgwater jobs. 'It's a working class town,' says Ms Burrows. 'And of course, jobs are very important to our town.'
Bridgwater, on the edge of the Somerset Levels, is an industrial town. It was the home of British Cellophane, with a large production site in the town until 2005, when 200 jobs were lost.
The town has a rebellious history – in 1685, an attempt to overthrow King James II known as the Monmouth Rebellion was crushed nearby. More recently, in 2009, residents succeeded in preventing a Tesco from being built after occupying a swimming pool.
The town has more than half a dozen supermarkets, including Asda, Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer (M&S).
Ken Jones, 81, a retired shop owner and the campaign's co-chairman, whose wife died three years ago, argues face-to-face checkouts give him the company he misses.
'Isolation is a disease', he says. 'Meeting someone behind the till makes you feel as if you met a fellow human being. It's not AI. You're talking to someone, smiling. Just saying 'hello, good morning', to somebody makes you feel better – and surely that's got no price.
'I have good chats when I'm in the queue and you feel part of that community. That's what's missing in our lives.'
Mr Jones says that self-checkouts, on the other hand, feel like 'dehumanisation', adding that the campaign 'is not only against self-service tills, there's no bank in the town, it's just a hole in the wall. It's the whole way society is leaning now'.
'It has been a bit of a battle,' he says. 'It is between shop workers, the community, and the supermarkets.'
This sentiment is echoed by Dave Chapple, a 73-year-old former postman who has lived in the area for 38 years. 'Self-checkouts are perhaps increasingly popular, but that's largely because staff checkouts are less and less available,' he observes.
'In a lot of the supermarkets there are six, seven or eight potential staff checkouts and sometimes there's only one or two people at them,' adds Mr Chapple.
Barry Leathwood, 83, is making his way out of M&S from his weekly shop. He has lived on his own since his wife died three years ago. He says of the checkouts: 'It's nice to see a friendly face, rather than the machine.'
He adds: 'I'm not employed by [the supermarket], I don't really see why I should do the work for the company. They're making increased profits and reducing the number of staff and putting the burden on customers, particularly older people.'
Campaigners believe that reducing the number of manned checkouts automatically means a loss of jobs.
'Retailers will say that they've just moved people out on the floor rather than have them behind the till,' says Ms Burrows. 'But if you've got vacancies elsewhere, you should be recruiting more people, they're not to be dispensed with because you've got a machine. Automation is always about getting rid of jobs.'
Retail jobs are increasingly at risk. In 2024, nearly 170,000 were lost across the UK, a 42 per cent increase on 2023 and the highest annual figure since the Covid lockdowns of 2020.
Bridgwater has a population of around 42,000, and according to census data, nearly 40 per cent of the town are unemployed. Youth unemployment in the South West stands at 14.6 per cent, according to the Office for National Statistics.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, therefore, it is not only Bridgwater's pensioners who are rallying against the self-checkout technology but the town's teenagers.
Eighteen-year-old Ajay Barrow says he has seen the impact of the self-checkouts on jobs first-hand and is prepared to join the boycott of the self-service tills as a result.
'Quite a lot of my mates have lost their jobs as a result of self-checkouts,' he tells The Telegraph. 'One of my mates who is also 18 was [working at a supermarket] for quite a while, but they've kept the adults and kicked out the younger ones due to the self-checkouts. She hasn't found another job.'
Becky Mathews, 43, a personal trainer at the gym opposite Asda, argues that the self-checkouts are stripping young people of valuable opportunities for development. 'For the young generation, it tends to be that their first job is in retail. It's good for them to have that customer service to deal with people,' she says.
Louise Pickles, 64, a village shop assistant, says the self-checkouts 'make you feel like you're a bit stupid because you can't work out what you're pressing… I don't find the staff that work on the self-service are always that friendly. It's like you're a bit of a nuisance to them, but it's fine once you know the system.'
This suggests that self-checkouts do not necessarily deliver the customer service for which they are designed.
'The expansion of self-service checkouts is a response to changing consumer behaviours, which show many people prioritising speed and convenience,' said Kris Hamer, director of insight at the British Retail Consortium. 'Many retailers provide manned and unmanned checkouts as they work to deliver great service for their customers.'
Asda is among a handful of stores that appear to be listening to the backlash. In August, the supermarket announced it was going to put more staff on checkouts, with Michael Gleeson, its chief financial officer, saying: 'I think we have reached a level of self-checkouts and 'scan and go' where we feel that works best for our customers, and we feel we've got the balance just about right.'
Others have made similar moves, with Rami Baitieh, Morrisons' chief executive, admitting in the same month that the retailer had gone 'a bit too far' with self-checkouts. Northern grocer Booths has opted to ditch them outright after its boss said they made it impossible to deliver a high standard of customer service.
The backlash appears to be even bigger in the US. Under new laws proposed in February, supermarkets would have to comply with rules that would limit self-checkout use to when a regular manned lane is open. Major supermarkets including Walmart, Target and Costco have begun limiting or banning self-checkouts.
Though the Bridgwater campaign group has not yet had any meetings with supermarket managers, they warn that if bosses do not listen to them, there may be trouble in the town.
'If retailers in this instance don't respond to human needs then there will be a war,' concludes Ms Burrows.
'People will get angry and want to fight back. We are being reasonable, but if the managers are not going to be reasonable then it will escalate – it doesn't stop our anger.'

LONDON, Aug 11 (Reuters) - British retailer Marks & Spencer (MKS.L), opens new tab has resumed taking click and collect orders for clothing after a 15-week hiatus following a cyber hack and data theft. The 141-year-old M&S stopped taking orders through its website and app for clothing and home deliveries and collection from stores on April 25, three days after disclosing it was managing a "cyber incident". It resumed taking online orders for delivery on June 10 but click and collect services, which allow customers to order items online and pick up in stores, had remained suspended. M&S's website said on Monday that click and collect had resumed. The company did not respond immediately to a request for comment. In May, M&S forecast the hacking of its systems would cost it about 300 million pounds ($404 million) in lost operating profit in its 2025/26 financial year, though it hopes to halve the impact through insurance and cost control. As part of its management of the hack and data theft, M&S took other systems offline. That reduced both clothing and food availability in stores, further denting sales. Rivals, such as Next (NXT.L), opens new tab in clothing and Sainsbury's (SBRY.L), opens new tab in food, have been beneficiaries. High street bank to axe lifeline service for ALL customers – what it means for your money
A BIG high street banking chain is axing a lifeline service for all customers within weeks. M&S Bank is stopping customers from paying off their credit card bills in-store, by cheque, or using bank giro credit - a move campaigners say will make life harder for older and vulnerable people. 1 The bank, run as a joint venture between HSBC and M&S since 2004, had already paused in-store credit card payments back in April. Now, the decision has been made permanent, according to This is Money. To make matters worse, a letter sent to customers confirmed that from October, payments by cheque or giro credit will no longer be accepted at banks, building societies, or post offices. The decision has caused a stir, with critics claiming it's yet another blow to older people who are being left behind in an increasingly digital world. Baroness Ros Altmann, a pensions expert, said: "You're pushing away your most loyal, older customers who've probably shopped with you for decades. "It might only be a minority who use these methods, but with M&S Bank's huge customer base, it's still a lot of people. "These changes tend to hit older folks hardest. "Many don't have access to online banking or smartphones, and some prefer cash to help them budget better." M&S Bank currently offers credit cards, personal loans, travel insurance, store payment cards and a buy now pay later credit to over three million UK customers. Caroline Abrahams, Age UK's charity director, also raised concerns. She highlighted research showing that 27% of people still manage their accounts through branches, while 31% feel uneasy about banking online. "Reducing payment options will limit some older people, especially those who aren't online or who prefer cash," she said. M&S Bank has defended the decision, saying only "1%" of customers use these older payment methods. A spokesperson said: "Most customers are choosing to use digital channels for their banking needs. "We've introduced a pay-by-bank option via the M&S Bank app, alongside direct debit and bank payments, to make things easier for them." They added that the axed options were "legacy payment methods" and pointed out that customers can still pay at a bank, but giro forms will no longer be printed with statements. M&S Bank used to offer current accounts prior to 2021. However, the bank closed this product offering on August 31, 2021, in a shock move that also resulted in the closure of all 29 in-store bank branches on July 2 of the same year. Since the shake-up, the bank has completely shifted its focus to credit cards, insurance and reward offerings. M&S REWARDS POINTS M&S Rewards Credit Card holders earn reward points with every purchase. Points can then be converted into M&S rewards vouchers which can be spent in stores and online. Cardholders earn one point for every £1 spent at M&S and for every £5 spent elsewhere, with 100 reward points equating to £1. When you reach 200 reward points you will receive a rewards voucher, which are sent out every quarter. Digital Rewards vouchers are usually available in your Sparks account in the M&S app or at in March, June, September and December. Paper rewards vouchers are usually sent in February, May, August and November. Paper rewards vouchers are valid for 15 months. Digital rewards vouchers in your Sparks account are valid for 17 months. What other banking changes are coming? NatWest is making changes to its business current accounts by increasing fees for cash payments, cheque transactions, and certain online transfers. From August 30, cash payments into and out of business accounts will see their fees surge from 70p per £100 to 95p per £100. Cheque payments, whether processed by hand or via mobile, will also jump from 70p to 75p per cheque. The bank is also increasing some charges related to its BACS payment system. The BACS system is a UK payment network used by businesses to make electronic bank-to-bank transfers, such as Direct Debits and Direct Credits. The fee for processing each individual payment or instruction, will soon rise from 18p to 21p. The cost to process a file containing multiple payments or instructions will also increase slightly from £5.25 to £5.35. Meanwhile, Santander is closing its 123 Lite current account, which offers up to 3% cashback on household bills for a £2 monthly fee, on August 21. Customers affected by the closure will be automatically switched to Santander's Everyday Current Account. This account has no monthly fee but does not include cashback benefits. Plus, new customers applying for the bank's Edge Credit Card will now face a monthly fee of £4, an increase from the previous £3. Plus, customers of Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland will soon lose the ability to deposit their cheques at any of the 11,500 Post Office branches nationwide. From December 31 this year, Lloyds Banking Group will withdraw this service for all customers. CREDIT CARD NEED-TO-KNOWS NOT using a credit card effectively can wreak havoc on your finances and your credit score. If you don't keep up with repayments or default on your debt, you are likely to get a black mark on your credit record, which could affect your ability to get a credit card, loan or mortgage in the future. It's important not to let yourself get sucked into overspending. You should always clear the full balance as soon as possible. If you have a poor credit score, don't bank on being approved for a card or getting the 0% deal you'd hoped for. Card providers only have to give the advertised rate to 51% of applicants, so you could end up paying more interest than you bargained for. After your 0% period is up, lenders can charge upwards of 40% interest, so if you have not repaid the debt fully by then, try to move the debt onto another 0% deal. If you've got a poor credit record, you're less likely to get the best rates. And if you are looking for a new credit card, don't apply for lots at once.

How M&S became a copycat machine
When Marks & Spencer released a new range of 'chunked 'n loaded' cookies last month, they were an instant hit. 'If you're thinking of going to your local M&S to get them after you watch this video, don't bother,' TikTok vlogger Carmie Sellitto told his 1.2 million followers. 'They will be sold out everywhere'. Within hours of the cookies appearing at M&S bakery counters, social media influencers were uploading reams of videos on social media to hail them a taste success. But not everyone was a fan. David Sawyer, from Melton Mowbray-based baker The Cookie Dealer, is shunning M&S over claims it copied his product. His complaints stem from a meeting with M&S a year ago, when his team were invited to present a range of custom chunked cookies. After M&S decided against placing an order, Sawyer says he had 'forgotten all about it'. That was until he spotted the retail giant's latest cookie range in July, which he says is eerily similar to his own. 'It was like all they wanted to do was to copy our product,' he says. 'I guess everybody has to get inspiration from somewhere.' M&S has rejected the allegations, insisting that it never copies any specific products or sellers. However, bosses have admitted that they are increasingly taking inspiration from viral trends, potentially putting the company on a collision course with other smaller brands. The brewing debate over alleged 'copycatting' is particularly sensitive for M&S, a company that has built a reputation for being fiercely protective of its designs. Most notably, it sued Aldi over its Colin the Caterpillar cake dupe, while it has also cracked down on other local retailers to prevent them from using the Percy Pig design. 'It would be easy to look at these things and be disappointed by M&S,' says David Sables, chief executive of Sentinel Management Consultants, which advises suppliers. However, even he admits that for a supermarket to be truly innovative is a challenge, as most retailers compete by tweaking existing products or adding new flavours. 'A lot of true innovation does come from smaller businesses and it makes perfect sense for the big retailers to be looking at that,' he says. This is particularly key for M&S, which has embarked on a major refresh of its food lines in the past year, introducing more than 400 new products since January. This already appears to be paying dividends, with a recent YouGov survey suggesting that customers view M&S as significantly better than rival supermarkets in offering new and unique products. Kathryn Turner, product development director at M&S Food, says: 'At M&S, our commitment to quality and innovation is at the heart of everything we do. We're continually developing new products designed to delight our existing customers and attract new ones.' She said it was focusing on a 'more consistent stream of innovation throughout the year'. The strategy has already yielded positive results, regardless of the recent cyber attack, with bosses hailing the fact that it has sold more than 1.4 million of its 'chunked 'n loaded' cookies since its launch in July. The notorious strawberry and cream sandwich, which M&S introduced as a limited edition product in June, has also been a bestseller. Still, some have questioned how innovative M&S's products truly are. Earlier this year, a 'strawberry sando' from Japanese retailer SevenEleven had gone viral on TikTok prior to M&S's release. M&S has also faced accusations that its 'Chocolate Custard Cream Biscuity Easter Egg', which also gained viral fame on social media, was a copy of a chocolate egg from Flo Broughton's Choc on Choc business. 'We'd been working with M&S, so they had seen our full range,' she says. 'We had talked to them about making those things for them, so they knew what we made.' M&S has denied wrongdoing, with a spokesman insisting: 'It's an evolution of our customer favourite Outrageously Chocolatey Custard Creams and takes inspiration from the much-loved British custard cream.' However, Broughton insists that 'the claim they never saw our design was absolutely ridiculous'. Claire Hughes, a former food technology boss at M&S and ex-director of product at Sainsbury's, says retailers have always looked for inspiration from various places, taking ideas and making them their own. 'If you're doing a big push on barbecue, you would go into Texas and see what's happening there in terms of barbecuing, and you would bring that back,' she says. Now, with more people using apps such as TikTok to discuss food, 'trends are happening almost instantly', Hughes says. 'The question is, how do you get on them really quickly, work with your suppliers and turn them into products on shelves?' She says over the past year, M&S has been 'really good at turning trends around pretty quickly'. Yet, it appears small independent brands risk paying the price, as they become a victim of their own success if a product goes viral online. At The Cookie Dealer, Sawyer says there is little he can do. M&S has contacted him to make clear it had already been developing its own chunked cookies and it has denied copying his products. 'They said it was a coincidence,' he says. Still, Sawyer says there has been a silver lining to his situation. The dispute has attracted the attention of Aldi, which has contacted the Cookie Dealer team to set up a meeting later this month. 'We dust ourselves down and just get on with things,' Sawyer says. 'All we can try to do is make the best cookies you can.'
