Feature Video: Winter McQuinn ft. Dylan Young and Hot Apple Band - Always Looking
Directed by animator, collage maker and all-round creative brain Millar Wileman, the music video for 'Always Looking' cleverly applies subversive visual cues to mirror the song's contrasting musicality and lyrics. Millar says 'this one was a lot of fun to make! I wanted the visuals to reflect the introspective lyrics in a way that wasn't super obvious but kind of hidden behind the jovial characters… similar to how the song sounds uplifting but the lyrics are saying something else. I've done a lot of collage but not much claymation so it was fun giving that a go.' 'I really enjoyed Millar's other videos he's done for artists I admire including Mouche, Hooverii, DAFF and was really stoked with what he made for this track' says Winter. 'I like his use of collage and clay animation combined with abstract imagery and the flittering timing of everything. It really suits the vibe of the song and I liked how he referenced the lyrics loosely, nothing's too literal but still connected.'
'Always Looking' was written almost overnight by Winter and Hot Apple Band's Jack Kinder after going to the community cup in Melbourne. Winter explains 'I had the rhythm guitar idea and was using it in another song which I showed Jack to which he said "all due respect but we're gonna come up with something better". He adds 'Millar also totally nailed the 'sounds like' reference when he replied saying it sounded like Steely Dan meets Nick Drake'.
