'Miller ticks every box'

Lennon Miller isn't just impressive on the pitch. He's a standout on paper too.The Motherwell midfielder looks destined for a big-money move to Italian club Udinese after flying out to Italy on Monday.Miller, 18, is a dream data-driven transfer target, says former Premiership striker Rory Loy, who hopes the 18-year-old can be the latest Serie A Scottish success after the likes of Scott McTominay, Billy Gilmour and Lewis Ferguson."In the modern game with data and analytics and the way people try and recruit players, it's almost tick box rather than actually watching them, and Lennon Miller must tick every single box and every single person's sheet," said Loy on the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast."He's very young, he's 18 years old, he's played over 70 first-team games in the middle of the pitch, he's a good height, so I'm not surprised there's been so much interest in him and he's technically very gifted as well."I spoke to Lee, his dad, at a Scotland Under-21s game last year against France at the Falkirk Stadium. I got the impression that going abroad would have been Lennon's first choice."It doesn't surprise me that he's on a plane out to Udinese. I would imagine that deal will get done at some point and hopefully he can go and have the impact on Serie A which our other Scottish players have had in recent years."

Joe Gomez returns to Liverpool training ahead of Friday's Premier League opener

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has returned to training ahead of Friday's Premier League opener at home to Bournemouth in a timely boost for head coach Arne Slot. The 28-year-old, the club's longest-serving current player, returned home from the tour of the Far East early with an Achilles injury and was subsequently sidelined for three weeks. But he was pictured with the rest of his team-mates on Wednesday as preparations ramp up for the defending champions' season opener at Anfield. His absence had left Slot with just two senior centre-backs in Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate and questions had been asked as to whether the Reds boss had left himself light in that area after allowing Jarell Quansah to join Bayer Leverkusen. However, moves are progressing for Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi and Parma's 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni, which would bring better balance to the squad.

'Udinese move is the perfect step for Lennon's development'

Lennon Miller's move to Udinese offers the perfect environment for the teenage midfielder to continue his rise in the game, according to his dad Lee. The 18-year-old completed his move to the Serie A side this week, with Motherwell receiving a club record £4.5m for a player who came through their youth academy. Miller leaves Fir Park after 76 appearances for Motherwell, having made his debut just days after his 16th birthday and already having played twice for Scotland. His impressive performances saw him linked with a move to a bigger club from an early age but he and his family felt it was important for him to get regular first team football and continue developing until the time was right. Lennon's dad Lee knows the game well from over 20 years as a professional player with Aberdeen, Dundee United, Falkirk and others, and has been there to advise his son every step of the way. He says the move to Italy is a huge step and while it's tough for a parent to see their son move away, it's the best possible move. 'It's tough,' Lee Miller told STV. 'It's tough but we know that he needs to do this and he needs to kick on and and go experience a different culture, a different lifestyle, a different way of playing. 'I mean, come on, this was a fantastic opportunity for him to go there and kick on in his career.' Every transfer window in the past couple of years has brought links with big name clubs and Lee admits there were bigger names than even Udinese interested but the club felt right from the moment things got serious. He believes the city is an ideal place to get on with the work required to improve his game. 'I'm not gonna get into obviously the details, but there was a few really interested,' Lee said. 'My wife, Lennon's stepmum, and Lennon went over three weeks ago and were sold on it. 'It's a perfect place environment for him to go and develop. It's a quiet city where you can just knuckle down. 'No distractions. Knuckle down, get on with his business and hopefully take his career to the next level. 'And they were sold on the facilities. The stadium is hosting the PSG v Spurs Super Cup. 'It's 'wow, a cracking stadium and a cracking training ground. 'He's in a great place for his career.' With a few teams vying for his signature, Udinese felt like the right choice and Lee said that a bigger team wouldn't necessarily have been better at this point. 'It's one of them where you get a feel for things,' he said. 'They've always been there, they've always been interested. 'There's the manager, he really likes the sporting director, and everybody about the place. It's a real feel-good factor about the club itself. 'He just felt, as well as us, that it was the perfect step. 'Sometimes in careers ,you can go too far. You can go to bigger steps and there were big clubs interested. 'But in my opinion, it wouldn't have been the right move for him and he agreed with that as well. 'I've always kind of been on the same page with that and where his next step is and I think this is going to do him well.' 'Standout' Stephenson set for Tannadice return

Jim Goodwin is confident of securing a deal to bring Liverpool's Luca Stephenson back to Dundee United and says it "shouldn't be an issue" to free up a loan space for the 21-year-old shone during a season-long loan at Tannadice last term, making 34 appearances and scoring three times."Luca was one of our standout performers last season and won the young player of the year award. I have made my feelings known to everybody about my thoughts on Luca," said manager Goodwin."We are still talking with Liverpool. It is not quite finalised yet, but I am really hopeful and quietly confident that we will get some positive news on that and get it over the line."United currently have six loan players, which is the maximum number permitted under SPFL rules."We are at that point at the moment so we need to tidy one or two bits up on an admin front but it shouldn't be an issue," added Goodwin, who is reportedly set to convert, external Finnish Dario Naamo's loan move into a permanent United boss added: "A lot of the loans have been set up in a way that there is the option to buy at the end of the loan. If we need to speed that process up in order to free up a loan place then we are well within our rights to do that."Danish midfielder Julius Eskesen this week became United's 12th recruit of the summer window, arriving on a two-year deal from Norwegian side said: "Really pleased to get Julius done, it is the type of player that we are just missing at the moment in the midfield, just one that can tie it all together."We have got guys in there who are really comfortable on the ball but Julius will give us that something a little bit different."He has a really good range of passing, plays forward, can see things that maybe sometimes other players can't, so hopefully we will get to see him at the weekend."
