Vice Premier He Lifeng said on Wednesday the world was undergoing "turbulence and transformation" as he kicked off an expo in Beijing.
Beijing is using this week's China International Supply Chain Expo as a forum to boost its image as the global defender of free trade – in contrast with the tariff chaos sparked by US President Donald Trump.
"Some countries are interfering in the market under the pretext of reducing risk, using measures such as imposing tariffs," the vice premier said in his opening remarks.
"Global changes of a century are accelerating, with multiple risks intertwining and piling up.
"We need to further build a shared consensus on development, firmly oppose the politicisation, ideologisation and over-securitisation of economic and trade issues, and work together to uphold an open and cooperative international environment."
China, He said, is accelerating industrial modernisation, which will support global industry and supply chains.
The country is also increasing efforts to boost consumption, he said. (AFP/Reuters)

Trump slams own supporters as ‘weaklings' for falling for Epstein ‘hoax'

US President Donald Trump is lashing out at his own supporters, accusing them of being duped by Democrats, as he tries to clamp down on criticism over his administration's handling of much-hyped records in the Jeffrey Epstein sex-trafficking investigation, which Trump now calls a 'Hoax'. 'Their new SCAM is what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax, and my PAST supporters have bought into this 'b******t, hook, line, and sinker,' Trump wrote Wednesday on social media, using an expletive in his post. 'They haven't learned their lesson, and probably never will, even after being conned by the Lunatic Left for 8 long years.' 'Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats work, don't even think about talking of our incredible and unprecedented success, because I don't want their support anymore! Thank you for your attention to this matter,' he went on. The rhetoric marks a dramatic escalation for the Republican president, who has broken with some of his most loyal backers in the past, but never with such fervour. Trump says not planning to fire US Fed chief Powell, after report prompts drop in stocks

US President Donald Trump said Wednesday he is not planning to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, after a Bloomberg report that the president is likely to do so soon sparked a drop in stocks and the dollar, and a rise in Treasury yields. Such reports were not true, Trump said. 'I don't rule out anything, but I think it's highly unlikely unless he has to leave for fraud,' Trump said, a reference to recent White House and Republican lawmaker criticism of cost overruns in the US$2.5 billion renovation of the Fed's historic headquarters in Washington. Stocks pared losses and Treasury yields pared declines after Trump's comments, which also included a now familiar barrage of criticism against the Fed chair for not cutting interest rates, calling him a 'terrible' chair. Trump did talk to some Republican lawmakers about firing Powell, he said, but said he was more conservative about his approach to the question than they were. The president said 'almost every one of them' supported the idea of removing the central bank chief, but denied that he drafted and displayed a letter authorising Powell's firing. Two individuals familiar with the meeting said Trump did display such a document.

Maxwell's family says ‘government misconduct' could overturn Epstein sex trafficking conviction

The family of disgraced British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell has said new evidence such as 'government misconduct' could be used to challenge her imprisonment. Advertisement The 63-year-old was found guilty in December 2021 of luring young girls to massage rooms for paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein to molest between 1994 and 2004. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison at the federal court in the southern district of New York (SDNY) in June 2022. The US government has faced a backlash from President Donald Trump's support base following words from Attorney General Pam Bondi that there was no evidence Epstein had a 'client list'. Maxwell's family have frequently claimed she 'did not receive a fair trial,' but legal appeals against her sex trafficking convictions have been rejected by the courts. Advertisement Judges previously dismissed her lawyers' arguments that she 'should never have been prosecuted' because of a 'weird' agreement drafted more than 15 years ago – concluding that the Florida agreement 'does not bind' the United States Attorney's Office for the SDNY.
