Lead singer of legendary 80s band announces shock departure on live TV
The lead singer of Foreigner, Kelly Hansen, is leaving the band after nearly two decades.
Hansen, 64, shared the news live on the finale of The Voice last night, revealing that guitarist Luis Maldonado will take over as frontman.
While appearing on The Voice finale, Foreigner performed several of the band's massive hits, including Feels Like the First Time and I Want to Know What Love Is, before announcing the big news.
Hansen told the screaming crowd: 'After 20 magical years performing with this band, this will be my last year with Foreigner. This summer, a new great voice will sing these songs for you, my friend Luis Maldonado.'
'Being the voice of Foreigner has been one of the greatest honors of my life,' Hansen said in a later statement. 'But it's time to pass the mic. Luis has the voice, the energy, and the soul to carry these songs into the future. I couldn't be prouder to hand this off to him.'
Maldonado added, 'This music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I'm ready to honor Foreigner's legacy and bring my heart to every performance.'
Fans on social media reacted quickly to the news, with X user @Karine_BJ writing: 'Sad news 😢 Kelly Hansen did an amazing job keeping the legacy alive. Fantastic frontman and singer! 👌👏'

Mick Jones is the only founding member who currently plays with the band. The 2025 lineup includes Maldonado, Bruce Watson, Michael Bluestein, Chris Frazier, and Jeff Pilson.
Jones, 80, added in a statement about the band's latest transition: 'In 1976, my goal was to assemble the finest group of musicians I could find. Results have shown that it worked!
'About thirty years later, Jason Bonham encouraged me to do it all over again and create a brand-new Foreigner, and the magic was still there. I was especially fortunate in the choice of lead singer. Kelly Hansen is one of the best front men in our business and over the last twenty years he has breathed new life into our songs.
'His boundless energy and flawless talent has helped us climb the mountain and set up the opportunity for Foreigner vocalist and guitarist, Luis Maldonado, to bring us home.'
He added: 'I wish Kelly great happiness in his next endeavors after our summer tour, and I look forward to welcoming Luis to his new position. Luis was my choice as a guitarist and he has already shown us what he can do on lead vocals by fronting the band in South America to incredible reviews. He will soon lead the charge that will carry us forward to new heights.'
The band was founded in 1976 by guitarist Mick Jones, vocalist Lou Gramm, drummer Dennis Elliott, keyboardist Al Greenwood, bassist Ed Gagliardi, and multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald.
With Gramm leaving the band over creative differences in the early 2000s, Hansen joined Foreigner in 2005. More Trending
The band, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its formation next year.
Their current tour will feature both Hansen and Maldonado on stage in a symbolic handoff.
Foreigner is one of the most successful rock bands ever, achieving massive commercial success in the late 1970s and 1980s, blending hard rock with pop sensibilities.
They've sold over 80million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time, and produced a string of iconic hits, including I Want to Know What Love Is, Cold as Ice, Hot Blooded, Urgent, and Juke Box Hero.

Suranne Jones: ‘My son cringed at one part of my new Netflix thriller'
Let's set the scene: it's a sunny day on Downing Street and the press corps is waiting, cameras poised, for the Prime Minister, when out from Number 10 steps Suranne Jones. Except, it isn't Suranne Jones. This is our latest elected leader Abigail Dalton. (Albeit an unlikely name for a British PM.) With a sharply cropped new hairdo – more on that later – and a plum power suit, Jones stars in Netflix's new political thriller Hostage, across from Julie Delpy's visiting French president. The two world leaders are locked in tense negotiations over Channel boat crossings and NHS medication supplies when disaster, right on cue, strikes. Abigail's do-gooder husband Alex (Bashy) is in French Guiana on a Doctors Without Borders project, when his entire cohort is kidnapped by a masked gang. Their ransom request? Abigail must resign, or they'll start picking off doctors one by one. Given that he's been snatched in French territory and it turns out the kidnappers have dirt on the French pres too, what unfolds is a gripping, if somewhat unlikely, political thriller with two frenemy female leaders going head-to-head. Ahead of the five-part show's release on Netflix this Thursday (August 21), Suranne spoke to Metro about working with writer Matt Charman on what type of 'strong female character' she had yet to tackle, when she noticed a politically-themed role was missing from her head count. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Doing double duty as both the show's star and an executive producer meant Suranne was part of the decision-making process on elements like makeup and costume, which real-world female politicians have said is always being carefully managed to ensure it's on brand. Delpy's president Vivienne Toussaint first emerges from a car with all the sleek menace of a knife, wearing a white coat with a slash of red lipstick (the type of thing the Before Sunrise star tells us is the complete opposite of her 'sloppy' norm). 'Abigail matches [Vivienne] in a way,' says Suranne. 'She gets a little bit more put together as her life starts falling apart, which is interesting. You're adding layers, you're adding armour, because you need to be perceived as in control.' With a knowing smile, she adds: 'Also it's a Netflix show. At a very base level, I want to watch and go, 'I want to wear her coat'.' The 46-year-old has become one of British TV's most bankable terrestrial stars – with shows like Vigil and Gentleman Jack on the BBC – but Hostage marks her first foray into the gleaming, glossy-coat world of Netflix. While making TV is by no means an easy feat, Suranne and Julie do point out all the ways their lives are not like their Hostage counterparts. For one thing, Suranne says, she gets more sleep. The stars researched real-life politicians who have walked the corridors of power and remarked upon the 'instant' changes in their hair and pallor when they take office – as if the weight of responsibilities has dawned and taken a psychical toll. Part of that is why Abigail undergoes a drastic hair transformation from the brief scene we see before the election, to the moment she later approaches the despatch box in Parliament. It's a she-means-business cropped 'do. 'Chopping her hair off is something less to worry about,' says Suranne. 'It's taken me a long time to grow it back. My son hated it. He said, 'Mummy, please don't pick me up at the school gates'.' More Trending This makes it sound a much worse trim than it actually is. 'I liked it,' Suranne adds. 'But he was just like 'Oh, cringe'.' It is the case that with the fast-paced twists and turns Hostage takes us on, Abigail's hair is likely the last thing she wants to be thinking about. Victoria Beckham and Richard E Grant reunite 28 years after Spiceworld
Victoria Beckham and Richard E. Grant delighted fans this week when they enjoyed an impromptu reunion – 28 years after starring together in Spice World. Film 'Mistress Dispeller' observes love triangle with shifting sympathies
LONDON, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Filmmaker Elizabeth Lo's quest to document modern relationships in China led her to a little-known practice to tackle infidelity, discovering that people catching their spouses cheating can hire a professional to end the affair. Lo's documentary "Mistress Dispeller" gives a close-up glimpse into what is a relatively new industry in China. Shot over four months, the film follows the real-life case of Mr. and Mrs. Li. The badminton-loving parents of one are considered a model couple by many in their neighbourhood but lately, Mr. Li has got close to a young woman from a nearby town, Fei Fei. Anguished, Mrs. Li reaches out to Teacher Wang, an experienced mistress dispeller. Lo and her team met with dozens of mistress dispellers, but Wang was the only one able to persuade her clients to go on camera. Lo said seeing it unfold in front of her, her sympathies kept shifting from the wife to the husband and even the mistress, which took her by surprise. It took her team three years of following Wang, filming multiple cases, before they landed on the Li's. The film shows Wang infiltrating the family under a false identity and after gaining Mr. Li and Fei Fei's trust, influencing them to break up. In order to authentically capture the process, the husband and the mistress could not be let in on the film's concept and were approached to participate in a documentary about modern love in China. A disclaimer at the start of the film declares that none of the scenes are scripted or re-enacted and the subjects agreed to participate in it. "We really grappled with how we stay ethical as a production when we can't be transparent at first," said Lo. "We knew that we would show them a cut of the film and give them the opportunity to re-consent to being a part of it. We were very prepared that if they were to drop out, we could pivot to a different film." "Mistress Dispeller" combines sweeping drone shots of bustling cities and wilderness landscapes with fly-on-the-wall scenes capturing intimate conversations. "I really wanted audiences to be able to watch the organic interplay between characters. What strings does Teacher Wang pull that elicit what reaction? She's ten steps ahead of everybody constantly," Lo said. Hong Kong-based Lo, whose previous feature "Stray" centred on street dogs in Istanbul, hopes "Mistress Dispeller" will encourage audiences to reflect on their own approaches to love and forgiveness. "We're all sort of fumbling through love and trying to find love, sustain love and to keep it," she said. "Mistress Dispeller" is released in the United Kingdom on August 22 and the United States in late October.
