Brazil starlet Estevao 'ready' for Chelsea move: Palmeiras coach
Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira said he believes teenage prodigy Estevao Willian is ready to take the leap to the Premier League after he marked his farewell appearance for the Brazilian club with a goal against future employers Chelsea on Friday. Estevao, 18, scored a fantastic equaliser in the Club World Cup quarter-final between the teams in Philadelphia but could not prevent Chelsea claiming a 2-1 win thanks to a late own-goal. Advertisement He will now complete a move to the London club, finally heading to England just over a year after Chelsea agreed to pay Palmeiras a reported 57 million euros ($67.1m), including bonuses, for him. "I don't have sons, I have two daughters, but he is my son," Ferreira said after the match at Lincoln Financial Field, adding that he had exchanged words with Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca about Estevao. "I spoke before with Maresca. He is a nice coach, and I told him that they bought an amazing player but more than this they bought an amazing person. "He is an amazing player and I said that they need to take care of him and embrace him because for sure in the beginning he will make mistakes, but you saw today that he is a player with a lot of skills who can win a game on his own. He has that capacity." Advertisement Estevao was named the best player in the Brazilian league last year and has shown plenty of glimpses of his potential at the Club World Cup. Now he must try to win a place in the Chelsea team in the face of stiff competition, with Maresca having a wide array of attacking options at his disposal. "For sure he will need the support of the coach and directors because he is young and it is the first time he is leaving his country," Ferreira added. "I told him it won't be the same because the sun comes out two or three times a year, the night comes early, but I believe Chelsea have all the conditions to support him. Advertisement "He is a fantastic player and I think he is ready." - 'Huge talent' - Ferreira, the Portuguese coach who has been in charge of Palmeiras since 2020, earlier hugged Estevao in front of reporters, with the player smiling despite the disappointment of his team's exit. Maresca said: "I spoke to Estevao for the first time after the game and told him it was the perfect night because we won and he scored. "You can see he is a huge talent, a fantastic player, and the only thing for me is that when you come from South America or in general another part of the world to Europe, you need to adapt. Advertisement "So we need to help him to adapt and first of all to be happy, continue to enjoy football, but we don't have any doubt because he is such a good player that he is going to be a very important player for Chelsea." Another future Chelsea player, Jamie Gittens, was in attendance in Philadelphia with the England Under-21 international winger joining from Borussia Dortmund. "Jamie was here tonight and was on the pitch and will be with us for probably another day or two," Maresca said. "He will then go on holiday and come back when we start the new season." as/dh

Alcohol giant lays off 1,750 workers after abruptly quitting business in California
America's second-largest alcohol distributor is laying off more than 1,700 employees after announcing it is pulling out of business in California. Republic National Distributing, a once-dominant company that linked famous beer and vodka brands with local bars, filed paperwork to lay off 1,756 employees. Staffers in sales, analytics, and HR roles across California are set to get their pink slips. The job cuts are coming as the Texas-based company plans to shutter its distribution operations in California by September 2. It's the latest warning sign for an industry that's already struggling with closures and job losses as Americans increasingly cut back on alcohol. There are reportedly three main reasons for the statewide departure: increasing debt, sky-high costs, and a loss of important contracts to competitors. Republic National has not suggested that politics have played a role in its decision, but it is re-investing in Texas with 100 new jobs. President and CEO Bob Hendrickson said: 'This decision is driven by rising operational costs, industry headwinds, and supplier changes that made the market unsustainable.' He added that the company is 'using this moment to sharpen our focus and reinvest in the markets where we're best positioned to grow.' California remains a conundrum for business leaders. Business in the state makes more money than any other US market. It's the fourth-largest economy in the world, but also one of the most expensive places to do business. But entering that market remains critically expensive, with high gas, rent, and labor costs. Republic acquired Young's Market, a distributor with a complex web of local hubs, in 2022. But company insiders weren't impressed with Republic National's attention to details. 'They started focusing on numbers instead of customer satisfaction and that's what drove them to their fall,' an anonymous California-based worker told specialist outlet VinePair. A former worker claimed the company was 'terribly run' and its execs were 'in over their heads' in the Golden State. Recently, the company also lost some of its most important contracts. Jack Daniels, Tito's, and High Noon all moved their business over to Reyes Beverage Group, a beer distributor with a long history in California. Losing those contracts represented a huge loss for the company, according to The Spirits Business, and nearly forced the distributor's hand in jumping ship from the nation's largest alcohol market. Industry analyst Impact Databank estimated Republic National made $2.8 billion in sales in California alone in 2022. The company didn't immediately respond to request for comment. Several other alcohol brands have encountered major business disruptions in the past year, as consumers hang up their shot glasses in an increasingly inflationary economic environment. In February, Alamo Beer Company, a San Antonio-based brewer, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Brüeprint Brewing Company, a North Carolina-based microbrewery, liquidated its business in April.

Wales v Japan halted just seconds into match after worrying incident The Test match in Kitakyushu was just seconds old when the game was stopped Ben Carter was stretchered off seconds into the match (Image: BBC ) Wales' Test match versus Japan was halted just seconds into proceedings due to an injury to Ben Carter. With just 27 seconds on the clock, referee Damian Schneider blew his whistle after lock Carter took a heavy blow to the head in contact. There was immediate concern for the Dragons lock, with medical teams quickly attending to him on the pitch in Kitakyushu. The medical team quickly called for the stretcher and after a pause of around four to five minutes, Carter was carried off the field to applause from around the stadium. He was replaced by James Ratti. "If you are just joining us, worrying signs for Ben Carter, bang to the head in the first minute, he will not return to the field of play, that's a given," said BBC commentator Gareth Rees-Owen. Article continues below In the oppressive afternoon heat in Japan, the stoppage won't have helped Wales in their preparation. Co-commentator Richie Rees added: "It's how you manage your energy levels now. Really important energy levels are high just before kick-off. We've had three or four-minute break already and you have to generate your own energy levels." In the studio, former Wales fly-half Rhys Patchell said: "Japan are a team that comes out of the blocks very quickly, and this could've possibly taken the wind out of their sails. "This is a great opportunity for James Ratti, he has the opportunity to get right into the game from the start." Matt Sherratt and Co will be out to end Wales' miserable run of 17-straight Test match defeats. They have taken an early lead through Ben Thomas.
