Nasir expressed concern that delays in delivering verified information create opportunities for social media to dominate public perception, even when the content is false. He warned that artificial intelligence (AI) now poses new challenges in identifying the authenticity of news content. To address these issues, he proposed the establishment of a centralised, strategic media communication office to coordinate messages from government agencies before sharing them with the public. 'We need a media liaison office to coordinate statements from various agencies before they are shared with journalists and the public. "If information is delayed or inconsistent, it can cause confusion and various speculations. 'If the appointed officer lacks a background in media, it makes the communication process more difficult, when in fact media is a crucial instrument, not only for the government, but for the well-being of the people," he said. He stressed the need for the government to invest in public communication infrastructure continuously. 'The government must ensure that public communication infrastructure is constantly improved. "If that does not happen and the people continue relying on social media as their main source, then it is a warning sign that must be taken seriously. The anti-corruption protest, held last Saturday, took a contentious turn after a student activist was allegedly manhandled and arrested without clear justification. "I must stress that the right to peacefully assemble is a constitutional right. "This right should not be encroached upon by anyone, be it the current government, the police, or any other body claiming to act against peaceful assembly. "The aggression towards student activists at Himpunan 2.0 is utterly unacceptable," she told Sinar Daily when met at Karangkraf headquarters. Amira further stressed the need for accountability regarding the incident. She pointed out that the reported alleged aggressive actions by certain police officers were not sanctioned orders but appeared to be independent actions. "There needs to be an independent investigation into the officer involved. Disciplinary action must be taken to demonstrate that the government is serious about upholding the people's right to assemble. "This also serves as a warning to other officers that such aggression will not be tolerated under Malaysian law," she added. Drawing from her extensive experience participating in protests, Amira expressed concern over the persistent targeting of peaceful assemblies in Malaysia. "Ever since I started my journey as a student activist, I've joined multiple protests. This is a right enshrined in our Federal Constitution, yet organisers and attendees of peaceful assemblies are often questioned, detained or threatened by authorities," she said. Amira added that in the past, student activists were even threatened by their universities, creating a culture of fear that stifiles the exercise of constitutional rights. Amira also praised the Federal Court's recent decision declaring Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act unconstitutional. She described the ruling as a major victory for Malaysians and urged for its principles to be implemented at all levels, including enforcement. "This decision is a huge win for Malaysians. This is something that we should ensure is upheld not just at the court but also at the enforcement level," she said. "For example, capital gains tax and inheritance tax are mechanisms that should be explored. "These taxes would ensure that the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share,' she argued. She also questioned the government's definition of ultra-rich, suggesting that the current SST disproportionately affects ordinary Malaysians. 'If this tax is truly aimed at the ultra-rich, why are daily consumed by gig workers, young people and average families being taxed, while investment goods like gold remain untaxed?" she queried. Amira further highlighted the growing struggles faced by young people in Malaysia, especially in urban areas. 'Many young individuals in places like Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru are already struggling to make ends meet. The introduction of SST will only worsen their challenges,' she said. Citing research, she emphasised that the youth are disproportionately affected by rising costs and stagnant wages. 'Policies like this do not provide relief or solutions to their problems. The government needs to acknowledge this and act accordingly,' she added. She also called on the government to provide a clear and detailed explanation of its long-term plans for SST. 'The public deserves transparency on how SST revenues will be utilised and what safeguards will be put in place to protect the B40 and M40 groups,' Amira added.
