St. Louis golf looks to carry momentum into postseason
Baseball, softball, track and tennis started their postseasons last week, and golf will take its turn this week.
The St. Louis Catholic has the area's top boys team heading into the postseason. The Saints have won four of seven tournaments, including the Elton Golf Invitational, Barbe Buc Classic, Iowa Spring Classic and Golden Tor Invitational.
The Saints will play in the Division II, District 2 tournament on Wednesday at the Lake Charles Country Club, along with Iowa, Jennings, LaGrange and South Beauregard. The Saints will have an eye on Teurlings Catholic, last year's Division II state runner-up. The Saints have placed third or better at state in seven consecutive seasons, and the Rebels have been right there with them with seven consecutive top-five finishes. The 2020 season was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Saints have a strong lineup with three players ranked in the top 10 in Southwest Louisiana based on scoring average.
Junior Kye Hanks leads the area with a 73-stroke average, including three rounds of 67, despite an early-season wrist injury. He was the top medalist at the Iowa Spring Classic and Golden Tor Invitational.
'Kye is never out of the hole,' St. Louis Catholic head golf coach Pat Neck said. 'His short game is exceptional. He chips and puts probably as good as anybody that we've ever had.
'And this year he's gotten longer as he's grown a little bit. He's still not a very big kid, but he's grown a little bit. He's plenty long now, so he's able to go lower on a more consistent basis than anybody we've had.'
Senior Samuel Broussard is second in the area at 73.44 as the Saints' lone senior and has five top-four finishes.
'Sam is just steady,' Neck said. 'I want to say every round of this year has been between 70 and 76. Even when he's struggling, he's always able to get it around the course.
'You can almost write him down for a score in that range every tournament. He's been a heck of a leader by example for these other guys.'

Cameron Jordan, Tyrann Mathieu debut bold new hairstyles at Saints minicamp
A couple of New Orleans Saints veterans made their 2025 debuts in reporting for work at Tuesday's mandatory minicamp practice -- and two of them were sporting bold new hairstyles. Change is nothing new for Cameron Jordan, who has had some fun with his NFL-mandated headshot each season over the years, but his new platinum locks inspired by HBO's "House of the Dragon" series are something else. Jordan started binging the popular "Game of Thrones" spinoff this summer and picked up some fashion tips along the way. "I wanted to be a Velaryon," Jordan told reporters after practice, referring to one of the noble houses known for their distinctive bleach-blonde hair. "And I was like, 'You know what, this guy. This guy's got something going on.' Now granted, I thought I'd do the beard, too, but I didn't like the way the fumes was rising. So I kept it exactly how I wanted to. I think this is me. I'll see how long it lasts." But Jordan wasn't the only Saints veteran switching it up. Tyrann Mathieu has worn dreads for most of his 12-year NFL career, but he cut them off back earlier this spring. Speaking with reporters at his locker, he joked that "I was trying to shave some years off" before celebrating his 33rd birthday in May. Maybe the change can help him. Mathieu has intercepted 36 passes in his NFL career, trailing only Harrison Smith (37) for the most among active players. He wants that title for himself, and if a fresh cut puts a spring in his step, then so be it. Garrett Nussmeier spotted with Kellen Moore at Saints minicamp
Garrett Nussmeier spotted with Kellen Moore at Saints minicamp The New Orleans Saints opened up their mandatory minicamp practice to fans on Tuesday, but some of the most notable spectators were on the sidelines. Former Pro Bowl center LeCharles Bentley has found a tremendous second act in football as a personal trainer for offensive linemen, and he was back at the team practice facility in Metairie; Mike Triplett also saw former Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff chopping it up with Mickey Loomis. And that's interesting. Loomis has added a lot of former GM's to his front office like Jeff Ireland and Dave Ziegler, with his old boss Randy Mueller also joining the crew. Maybe Dimitroff is next. But a lot of fans were excited to see who Kellen Moore was talking to during practice -- LSU Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, son of Moore's offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier. It isn't often a top prospect is at a pro team's facility a year out from the next draft, but it's kind of a unique situation given the ties involved. Maybe Nussmeier builds on a strong 2024 season and the Saints end up in a position to draft him in 2025. This all kind of goes to show the atmosphere at this stage of OTAs; minicamp is full of seven-on-seven drills, light work, and some celebrity cameos before players take off for the summer. With an intense training camp on the horizon at the end of July, they'll be grateful for easier days like this in mid-June.
