Chandigarh chief secretary orders quick fix to power outages
The meeting, attended by engineering secretary Prerna Puri, chief engineer CB Ojha and senior CPDL officials, focused on improving the power situation since CPDL took over distribution responsibilities on February 1 this year.
During the meeting, Verma expressed serious concerns about the deteriorating power supply quality, particularly highlighting issues of unscheduled outages and delayed response times that have inconvenienced residents.
CPDL officials presented a detailed status report outlining both ongoing corrective measures and future plans to stabilise the power supply. Officials informed that CPDL has initiated grid infrastructure strengthening through scheduled maintenance at all substations, especially crucial ahead of peak summer demand.
To address immediate fault resolution, CPDL has outsourced specialised Fault Response Teams (FRTs) to ensure quicker complaint redressal.
On the consumer service front, CPDL has launched a 24x7 call centre, a dedicated WhatsApp helpline, and now provides both electricity meters and power cables free of cost — items that consumers previously had to purchase themselves. The new system ensures meter installations within 72 hours of application.
The presentation also revealed significant challenges, including aging infrastructure with frequent equipment failures identified during post-privatisation surveys and acute staff shortages currently being managed through outsourced manpower.
Looking ahead, CPDL is developing a robust cybersecurity framework and an 'islanding network' to maintain uninterrupted power supply to critical services like hospitals during grid failures.
The CPDL is also actively implementing the PM Surya Ghar-Muft Bijli Yojana to promote solar energy adoption.
The chief secretary was also apprised of the ongoing rollout of the PM Surya Ghar-Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG-MBY), along with future projects aimed at expanding and modernising Chandigarh's power delivery network.
The chief secretary has directed officials to ensure that power disruption is minimalised and response time be improved.

Over 5,500 rooftop solar connections installed in north Delhi
Over 5,500 rooftop solar connections have been installed across North Delhi, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL) officials said on Saturday. The initiative supports the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and Delhi Solar Policy, helping consumers reduce electricity bills while boosting clean energy adoption, the company said in a statement. The C&I segment contributes the highest energised capacity at 60.969 MWp (megawatt peak), compared to 34.929 MWp from domestic users and 12.565 MWp from others. (AP) The company said that domestic users lead in installations with 3,995 rooftop solar systems, followed by 1,497 in the Commercial and Industrial (C&I) sector and 38 in other categories. But the C&I segment contributes the highest energised capacity at 60.969 MWp (megawatt peak), compared to 34.929 MWp from domestic users and 12.565 MWp from others. The discom said that residential societies are also embracing solar power, with 13 societies in Tata Power-DDL's operational areas installing systems totalling 0.377 MWp. Most opted for setups between 2 kW and 3 kW. A Tata Power-DDL spokesperson said, 'Each kilowatt of rooftop solar generates 100–120 units monthly, allowing consumers to recover costs in three to four years through bill savings.' The total sanctioned load has now crossed 100 MWp. According to the company, government incentives have spurred adoption. Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, households get ₹30,000 per kW for systems up to 2 kW, with subsidies capped at ₹78,000 for larger setups. Residents also receive up to 300 free units monthly from their solar output. In the scheme, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) qualify for ₹18,000 per kW for shared facilities such as lighting and electric vehicles charging, limited to 3 kW per household and 500 kW per RWA. The Delhi Solar Policy adds further benefits, including ₹30,000 capital subsidies and generation-based incentives, the company said. Tata Power-DDL assists consumers with site checks, technical support, and net metering to ease the shift to solar.

CM wants AP to be green energy corridor
Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to craft a comprehensive plan to transform Andhra Pradesh into a 'Green Energy Corridor,' calling for short, medium and long-term strategies aligned with global energy trends. During a review at his camp office on Wednesday, Naidu focused on power supply, projects, investments, and easing electricity tariff burdens. The meeting included energy minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar, chief secretary K Vijayanand and senior officials from APTransco and APGenco. The Chief Minister stressed that green energy is the future, urging officials to reduce renewable energy production costs to benefit consumers. With electricity demand projected to rise by 8.9 per cent in the next two to three years, he called for proactive planning to meet this with sustainable sources. He proposed using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimise green energy production costs and suggested exploring non-tariff revenue streams, such as leasing Transco's fiber optic network, potentially generating Rs 7,000 crore. Expressing concern over the state's 9 per cent power distribution losses, Naidu advocated for improved feeder management and categorisation to curb losses. He also proposed modernising transmission lines and encouraging local consumption of locally generated power to minimise transmission losses. Reflecting on past energy audits that reduced power theft, he ordered a detailed study of current consumption patterns and a significant reduction in open-market power purchases. Chief secretary Vijayanand noted the target of lowering the per-unit purchase cost to Rs 4.80. Naidu suggested deploying sensors and drones for weather prediction to optimise power generation, especially as consumption reached 270 million units in March-April and is expected to hit 12,700 mw between September 2025 and March 2026. He urged officials to boost generation capacity and explore power swapping to reduce procurement costs. Additionally, he called for identifying sites for solar and wind projects, highlighting Andhra Pradesh's 65-gigawatt wind power potential and Rayalaseema's suitability for pumped energy projects. Wind power, at Rs 4.6 per unit, is more cost-effective than thermal power's Rs 5-6 per unit. Since June 2024, renewable energy projects worth Rs 3.19 lakh crore have been the PM-Surya Ghar solar rooftop project, Naidu set a target of 10,000 installations per constituency, with monthly progress reports for SC, ST, BC, and other communities. He strongly opposed smart meters for agricultural connections and directed power utilities to offer services via WhatsApp Mana Mitra. The Chief Minister also sought Central government's support for coal procurement for APGenco's thermal units. To enhance safety and service, he advocated using AI and predictive maintenance technology to replace outdated power lines, prevent electrical accidents, and address low voltage and leakages. Naidu emphasized ensuring an uninterrupted, high-quality power supply, aligning with Andhra Pradesh's vision to lead in green energy innovation.

Over 1.67 million households benefitted under solar scheme: Govt to RS

The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) is implementing PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY) across the country since February 2024. The scheme targets to achieve rooftop solar installations in one crore households in the residential sector by 2026-27. "A total of 16.78 lakh no. of households have been benefitted with rooftop solar installations under the scheme as on 05.08.2025 and amount of Rs 9,280.88 crore has been disbursed as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to the beneficiaries," Minister of State (MoS) for New and Renewable Energy and Power Shripad Yesso Naik said in a reply to the Rajya Sabha. The MNRE had launched Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Programme Phase-II in March 2019. In October 2022, the timeline for implementation of the programme was extended until March 2026. However, with the launch of PMSG: MBY in February 2024, the Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Programme Phase-II was subsumed under it.
