Over 5,500 rooftop solar connections installed in north Delhi
The company said that domestic users lead in installations with 3,995 rooftop solar systems, followed by 1,497 in the Commercial and Industrial (C&I) sector and 38 in other categories. But the C&I segment contributes the highest energised capacity at 60.969 MWp (megawatt peak), compared to 34.929 MWp from domestic users and 12.565 MWp from others.
The discom said that residential societies are also embracing solar power, with 13 societies in Tata Power-DDL's operational areas installing systems totalling 0.377 MWp. Most opted for setups between 2 kW and 3 kW.
A Tata Power-DDL spokesperson said, 'Each kilowatt of rooftop solar generates 100–120 units monthly, allowing consumers to recover costs in three to four years through bill savings.' The total sanctioned load has now crossed 100 MWp.
According to the company, government incentives have spurred adoption. Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, households get ₹30,000 per kW for systems up to 2 kW, with subsidies capped at ₹78,000 for larger setups. Residents also receive up to 300 free units monthly from their solar output.
In the scheme, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) qualify for ₹18,000 per kW for shared facilities such as lighting and electric vehicles charging, limited to 3 kW per household and 500 kW per RWA. The Delhi Solar Policy adds further benefits, including ₹30,000 capital subsidies and generation-based incentives, the company said. Tata Power-DDL assists consumers with site checks, technical support, and net metering to ease the shift to solar.

Washington, Aug 17 (AP) American lawmakers are using a trip to South Korea and Japan to explore how the United States can tap those allies' shipbuilding expertise and capacity to help boost its own capabilities, which are dwarfed by those of China. Sens Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill, and Andy Kim, D-NJ, who are scheduled to land in Seoul before travelling to Japan, plan to meet top shipbuilders from the world's second- and third-largest shipbuilding countries. The senators want to examine the possibilities of forming joint ventures to construct and repair noncombatant vessels for the US Navy in the Indo-Pacific and bring investments to American shipyards. 'We already have fewer capacity now than we did during 'Operation Iraqi Freedom' in 2003," Duckworth told The Associated Press. 'We have to rebuild the capacity. At the same time, what capacity we have is aging and breaking down and taking longer and more expensive to fix." Their trip comes as President Donald Trump demands a plan to revive US shipyards and engage foreign partners. The Pentagon is seeking USD 47 billion for shipbuilding in its annual budget. The urgency stems from the fact that Washington severely lags behind China in building naval ships, a situation raising alarms among policymakers who worry the maritime balance of power could shift to China, now the world's number 1 shipbuilder. Another possibility is repairing US ships in the Indo-Pacific region. 'If we have to bring ships all the way back to the United States… to wait two years to be fixed, that doesn't help the situation," Duckworth said. The discussions, she said, will focus on auxiliary vessels, which are noncombatant ships such as fuelling and cargo vessels that support naval and military operations. The Navy's auxiliary fleet is aging and insufficient in numbers, she said. The US commercial shipbuilding accounted for 0.1 per cent of global capacity in 2024, while China produced 53 per cent, followed by South Korea and Japan, according to a report by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies. A Navy review from April 2024 found that many of its major shipbuilding programmes were one year to three years behind schedule. During the trip, the senators are expected to meet representatives from major shipbuilders in the region. South Korea and the US are already making progress on shipbuilding cooperation. In March, Hanwha Ocean completed maintenance work for a 41,000-ton US Navy dry cargo and ammunition ship in South Korea. The overhaul of USNS Wally Schirra was the Korean company's first project after it secured a repair agreement with the US Navy in July 2024. Hanwha Group last year acquired Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia, which builds large merchant mariners, part of the reserve auxiliary fleet. Earlier this month, South Korea proposed to invest USD 150 billion in the US shipbuilding industry to support Trump's 'Make American Shipbuilding Great Again" initiative as part of its tariffs talk with the White House. Duckworth said she had earlier conversations with Hyundai Heavy Industries 'about them actually buying into US shipyards on US soil". This month, China formed the world's biggest shipbuilding company by merging two state-owned shipbuilders. The combined entity China State Shipbuilding Corporation produces Chinese navy's combat vessels from aircraft carriers to nuclear submarines. It commands 21.5 per cent of global shipbuilding market. Polls in Bolivia open for national elections that could empower right wing
Agency: La Paz (Bolivia), Aug 17 (AP) Polls opened in Bolivia for presidential and congressional elections that could spell the end of the Andean nation's long-dominant leftist party and see a right-wing government elected for the first time in over two decades. The election on Sunday is one of the most consequential for Bolivia in recent times — and one of the most unpredictable. Even at this late stage, a remarkable 30 per cent or so of voters remain undecided. Polls show the two leading right-wing candidates, multimillionaire business owner Samuel Doria Medina and former President Jorge Fernando 'Tuto" Quiroga, locked in a virtual dead heat. Many undecided voters But a right-wing victory isn't assured. Many longtime voters for the governing Movement Toward Socialism, or MAS, party, now shattered by infighting, live in rural areas and tend to be undercounted in polling. With the nation's worst economic crisis in four decades leaving Bolivians waiting for hours in fuel lines, struggling to find subsidised bread and squeezed by double-digit inflation, the opposition candidates are billing the race as a chance to alter the country's destiny. 'I have rarely, if ever, seen a situational tinderbox with as many sparks ready to ignite," Daniel Lansberg-Rodriguez, founding partner of Aurora Macro Strategies, a New York-based advisory firm, writes in a memo. Breaking the MAS party's monopoly on political power, he adds, pushes 'the country into uncharted political waters amid rising polarisation, severe economic fragility and a widening rural–urban divide." Bolivia could follow a rightward trend. The outcome will determine whether Bolivia — a nation of about 12 million people with the largest lithium reserves on Earth and crucial deposits of rare earth minerals — follows a growing trend in Latin America, where right-wing leaders like Argentina's libertarian Javier Milei, Ecuador's strongman Daniel Noboa and El Salvador's conservative populist Nayib Bukele have surged in popularity. A right-wing government in Bolivia could trigger a major geopolitical realignment for a country now allied with Venezuela's socialist-inspired government and world powers such as China, Russia and Iran. Conservative candidates vow to restore US relations. Doria Medina and Quiroga have praised the Trump administration and vowed to restore ties with the United States, ruptured in 2008 when charismatic, long-serving former President Evo Morales expelled the American ambassador. The right-wing front-runners have also expressed interest in doing business with Israel, which has no diplomatic relations with Bolivia, and called for foreign private companies to invest in the country and develop its rich natural resources. After storming to office in 2006 at the start of the commodities boom, Morales, Bolivia's first Indigenous president, nationalised the nation's oil and gas industry, using the lush profits to reduce poverty, expand infrastructure and improve the lives of the rural poor. After three consecutive presidential terms, as well as a contentious bid for an unprecedented fourth in 2019 that set off popular unrest and led to his ouster, Morales has been barred from this race by Bolivia's constitutional court. His ally-turned-rival, President Luis Arce, withdrew his candidacy for the MAS on account of his plummeting popularity and nominated his senior minister, Eduardo del Castillo. As the party splintered, Andronico Rodriguez, the 36-year-old president of the senate who hails from the same union of coca farmers as Morales, launched his bid. Ex-president Morales urges supporters to deface ballots. Rather than back the candidate widely considered his heir, Morales, holed up in his tropical stronghold and evading an arrest warrant on charges related to his relationship with a 15-year-old girl, has urged his supporters to deface their ballots or leave them blank. Voting is mandatory in Bolivia, where some 7.9 million Bolivians are eligible to vote. Doria Medina and Quiroga, familiar faces in Bolivian politics who both served in past neoliberal governments and have run for president three times before, have struggled to stir up interest as voter angst runs high. 'There's enthusiasm for change but no enthusiasm for the candidates," said Eddy Abasto, 44, a Tupperware vendor in Bolivia's capital of La Paz torn between voting for Doria Medina and Quiroga. 'It's always the same, those in power live happily spending the country's money, and we suffer." Conservative candidates say austerity is needed. Doria Medina and Quiroga have warned of the need for a painful fiscal adjustment, including the elimination of Bolivia's generous food and fuel subsidies, to save the nation from insolvency. Some analysts caution that this risks sparking social unrest. 'A victory for either right-wing candidate could have grave repercussions for Bolivia's Indigenous and impoverished communities," said Kathryn Ledebur, director of the Andean Information Network, a Bolivian research group. 'Both candidates could bolster security forces and right-wing para-state groups, paving the way for violent crackdowns on protests expected to erupt over the foreign exploitation of lithium and drastic austerity measures." All 130 seats in Bolivia's Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Parliament, are up for grabs, along with 36 in the Senate, the upper house. If, as is widely expected, no one receives more than 50 per cent of the vote, or 40 per cent of the vote with a lead of 10 percentage points, the top two candidates will compete in a runoff on October 19 for the first time since Bolivia's 1982 return to democracy. Air Canada strike: Government ends flight attendants' walkout, services to resume but cancellations linger
Air Canada will restart flights on Sunday evening after the Canadian government intervened to end a strike by its 10,000 flight attendants that left more than 100,000 travellers stranded during the peak summer season. The airline, Canada's largest, said it will take several days before operations return to normal and warned that some flights would remain cancelled over the next seven to 10 days until schedules stabilise. Federal Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu ordered attendants back to work less than 12 hours after they walked off the job at 1 a.m. on Saturday, citing the broader economic impact, AP reported. 'Now is not the time to take risks with the economy,' Hajdu said, pointing to the unprecedented tariffs the US has imposed on Canada. The dispute has been referred to the Canada Industrial Relations Board, which extended the current collective agreement until a new one is decided by arbitration. The walkout had paralysed operations of the carrier, which runs nearly 700 flights daily. The shutdown was affecting about 130,000 passengers a day. Aviation analytics firm Cirium said Air Canada had cancelled 671 flights by Saturday afternoon, following 199 cancellations on Friday. Another 96 flights scheduled for Sunday were already suspended. The union had rejected Air Canada's earlier request for government-directed arbitration, escalating the conflict. The government previously forced two major railroads into arbitration during a strike last year, a move unions challenged in court, arguing it weakened labour's bargaining power. In this case, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce welcomed Ottawa's intervention, and the Business Council of Canada had also urged binding arbitration. Hajdu stressed that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal government is 'not anti-union,' but added it was clear both sides were at an impasse. Air Canada announced that passengers affected by cancellations would be eligible for full refunds through its website or mobile app. It also promised to arrange alternative travel with other Canadian and foreign airlines 'where possible,' but cautioned that immediate rebooking could not be guaranteed as flights on other carriers were already full during the busy summer season. The airline and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) have been negotiating for nearly eight months without success. Pay remains the most contentious issue. Air Canada said its latest proposal offered a 38% increase in overall compensation, including benefits and pensions, over four years, a package that 'would have made our flight attendants the best compensated in Canada.' The union disagreed, arguing that the proposed 8% raise in the first year fell short of addressing inflation and raised concerns about the unpaid work flight attendants perform when aircraft are not in the air.
