FIFA inaugurates Africa office at Mohammed VI Football Complex in Morocco
The event was attended by Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe, Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) President Fouzi Lekjaa, and several other dignitaries.
«This is a historic moment, a festive and joyful day that will be etched in golden letters in the history of FIFA and African football, in Morocco, and across the world», said Infantino.
«I thank His Majesty King Mohammed VI for the momentum he has given to the development of sport across the continent», Infantino said, adding that the royal commitment to football development is «truly unique».
He went on to say that the Mohammed VI Complex, now home to the FIFA Africa office, has become a nerve center for African football and a symbol of a country, and a continent, looking toward the future.
«What we are inaugurating today is not just a FIFA Africa office. It's a global FIFA center that will have a worldwide impact on the game», Infantino emphasized.
The FIFA president also recalled Morocco's upcoming role in major international tournaments, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the next five editions of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which the Kingdom will co-host with Spain and Portugal. «The world will come together here in Morocco», he said.
He also highlighted the significance of Saturday night's Women's Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Nigeria in Rabat, calling it «a grand celebration» of women's football in both Morocco and Africa, and praised the unmatched passion of Moroccan fans.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe welcomed the opening of FIFA's Africa office in Morocco, saying, «There could not be a better place to establish this office».
He expressed gratitude to King Mohammed VI for his continued efforts to promote football on the continent, noting that African football is now reaching a global standard.
Reflecting on the performance of African teams at the last World Cup in Qatar, particularly Morocco's historic run to the semi-finals, Motsepe said he is convinced that African football is poised to dominate the global stage in the coming years.
FRMF President Fouzi Lekjaa emphasized that the Mohammed VI Complex, which now houses the FIFA Africa office, was made possible thanks to the enlightened vision of King Mohammed VI. He described the facility as the product of a broader strategy aimed at empowering Moroccan and African youth through sport.
«This vision aspires to make Morocco a welcoming hub for talent from around the world», he said.
Lekjaa added that the establishment of the office reflects FIFA's deep commitment to African football and the development of all its categories. He also reiterated that Morocco has long been, and will continue to be, a land of tolerance and a crossroads of civilizations.
The agreement to establish the FIFA Africa office in Morocco was signed last December in Marrakech, on the sidelines of the 2024 CAF Awards ceremony, by Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, and FRMF President Fouzi Lekjaa.

CAF Sacks Referees Director After WAFCON Scandal
CAF has reportedly removed Désiré Noumandiez Doué from his post as Director of Refereeing, following a formal protest by Morocco over officiating in the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final. According to several reports, the move is CAF's first disciplinary response after widespread criticism of refereeing standards – criticism that intensified after the final, held at Rabat's Olympic stadium last Saturday. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) submitted an official complaint earlier this week, citing what it called 'critical errors' during the match. The final, officiated by Namibia's Antsino Twanyanyukwa – with assistance from Rwanda, Senegal, and a VAR team led by Rwanda's Salima Mukansanga – ended in a 3–2 win for Nigeria. Morocco have clearly been denied a clear penalty and criticised a 'highly debatable' spot-kick awarded to Nigeria. The FRMF attached a CD containing video clips of more incidents they argue 'changed the course of the match'. Morocco head coach Jorge Vilda expressed disbelief after the match. 'We can't understand the decision made by the referee,' he told ESPN. 'She gave a penalty, but then the images we saw weren't the same as those presented to the referee. The images were clear—we were sure she had to give a penalty.' 'There was a penalty that should have stood—the referee blew for it, but then went to VAR. We saw there was a handball, but the referee overturned it. That decision determined our fate. It had a psychological impact that shocked us. It was a massive blow.' The episode has reignited concerns about refereeing standards and transparency at CAF. Several North African associations have long voiced frustration, accusing the organisation – led by South Africa's Patrice Motsepe – of regional bias. CAF has faced criticism on other fronts too, including backlash over a promotional video that showed a divided map of Morocco, omitting the country's southern provinces. Sources say CAF is now reviewing its refereeing system under growing pressure from member associations. A shake-up may be imminent. Tags: CAFFIFAFRMFInfantinoLekjaaMoroccomotsepenigeriaWAFCON

Rachad Fettal: Real Madrid Castilla's new Moroccan forward
Rachad Fettal is a name football fans in Spain and Morocco may hear more often in the coming years. The 20-year-old striker joined Real Madrid Castilla in July 2025 after a promising season with UD Almería, where he made his first-team debut and scored his first professional goal. Now, he is hoping to continue his development at one of the biggest clubs in the world. Fettal was born in Torre-Pacheco, in the Spanish region of Murcia, on January 16, 2005. He holds both Spanish and Moroccan nationality and has chosen to represent Morocco at the international level. He started playing football at a young age and joined local club EF Torre Pacheco, where he quickly stood out. At 13, he scored 28 goals in 30 games. That led to a move to UCAM Murcia's youth setup before joining UD Almería in 2020. His father, he says, has been a key figure in his career. 'He is the one who got me into football and has accompanied me to all games since I was little,' Fettal told AS. In the 2022–23 season, he was the top scorer in the Copa del Rey Juvenil, helping Almería's U19 team reach the final. He was then promoted to Almería B and made his senior debut at 16. In the 2023–24 season, Fettal made his first appearance for Almería's first team in La Liga, coming on against Real Betis in December 2023. He scored his first professional goal in September 2024 in a 2–2 draw with SD Eibar. 'I'm very grateful to coach Rubi, and I'm pleased he spoke well of me, even though we lost,' he said to La Voz de Almería after a league match. Fettal's season was interrupted by a knee injury in January 2025, which kept him out for three months. He returned in April and finished the season with 14 league appearances and one goal. On July 11, 2025, Real Madrid confirmed the signing of Fettal, who signed a three-year contract and joined Castilla, the club's reserve side, which plays in the third tier of Spanish football. At 1.84m, Fettal is a classic centre-forward. He is left-footed and known for his pace, strength, and movement off the ball. Spanish media have compared his playing style to that of former Barcelona and Uruguay striker Luis Suárez. 'He is a fighter. He doesn't stop pressing, he's got grit, and he never hides,' wrote Marca. Fettal has represented both Spain and Morocco at the youth level. He played for Spain U18 in 2023, scoring twice in three appearances, but later accepted a call-up to the Morocco U20 team. 'I still have a lot to improve, and I work every day on the details,' he told AS. Fettal is expected to compete for a starting role with Castilla in the 2025–26 season under coach Álvaro Arbeloa. If he continues to progress, a call-up to the Real Madrid first team — or Morocco's senior side — may not be far off. Tags: CastillaMoroccorachad fettalReal Madrid

Abqar on Getafe Switch: ‘They Wanted Me Most'
Getafe have officially signed Moroccan international Abdelkabir Abqar on a free transfer. The 26-year-old centre-back joins from Deportivo Alavés, where he spent the past five seasons, including two as a regular starter in La Liga. He has signed a three-year deal that runs until June 2028. Abqar made 56 appearances over the last two seasons, playing a key role in helping Alavés stay in the Spanish top flight. Known for his physical strength and anticipation, he brings experience and defensive depth to José Bordalás' squad. In his first remarks as a Getafe player, Abqar explained why he chose the Madrid-based club over other offers during the current transfer window. 'Getafe showed me the way from the start,' he said. 'From the moment the coach called me, I saw how much they wanted me here.' 'I spoke to my agent and felt that I would be comfortable here, that I would continue developing. That's why I'm at Getafe today.' Abqar also praised manager José Bordalás: 'He showed me how excited he was about having me and how he sees my potential to grow with the team and achieve my goals.' The defender confirmed he had received other offers, but his talks with the sporting director and Bordalás convinced him to join Getafe. 'I'm a competitive player who loves to win. I always strive to reach the highest level possible.' He concluded: 'Since joining, I've spoken directly with Bordalás. He asked me to give my all, to fight until the end. I'm ready. I'm eager to get started, repay the club's trust, and help the team.' Tags: AbqarBordalásDeportivo AlavesGetafela liga
