RCB celebrations held illegally, ended in stampede: Karnataka government tells HC
Back-to-back posts by Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited (RCSPL) on its social media platforms, inviting fans from dawn to dusk, led to huge gatherings, resulting in the stampede that claimed 11 lives and injured over 60 people at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, the state government contended before the Karnataka High Court on Wednesday.
As no permission was obtained under the Licensing and Controlling of Assemblies and Public Processions (Bengaluru City) Order, 2009, the whole event is illegal and a violation of the order, which is punishable under Section 223(B) of the BNS and Karnataka Police Act, the state argued before court.
As per the tripartite agreement between Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and RCB, the management of the stadium, including gates and private security, is the responsibility of RCB, which it is not admitting, the state argued.

The FIRs against Kumar are registered under BNS sections 175 for publishing false election statements, 353(1)(b) for spreading false information causing public mischief, 212 for giving false information to a public servant, and 340(1)(2) for using forged documents as genuine. On Tuesday, Kumar in a post on X said: 'I sincerely apologize for the tweets posted regarding Maharashtra elections. Error occurred while comparing data of 2024 LS and 2024 AS. The data in row was misread by our data team. The tweet has since been removed. I had no intention of dispersing any form of misinformation.' In his now-deleted post, Kumar had claimed that in the Ramtek assembly constituency, the number of voters decreased from 466,203 in the Lok Sabha polls to 286,931 during the assembly elections — a dip of 38.45%. Similarly, he claimed that in Devlali, the number of voters dipped 36.82% from 456,072 in the Lok Sabha polls to 288,141 in the assembly elections.

Labourer who strangled woman (65) for money arrested after gunfight in Noida
Noida: A murder accused was arrested after an encounter with Badalpur police near an abandoned railway crossing at Roza Yakubpur on Tuesday night. Pappu Mistri (27), a resident of Chhapraula, was the main suspect in the murder of an elderly woman who lived near Vidya World School. Pappu allegedly committed the crime on Aug 3 at the victim's house, where he strangled her and fled with her jewellery and mobile phone. According to police, the arrest was made by a police team that was conducting checks near the closed railway gate. A man was spotted approaching, and when signalled to stop, he tried to flee. Suspecting foul play, cops chased him. In retaliatory firing, he sustained a bullet injury and was overpowered," said DCP (central Noida) Shakti Mohan Avasthy. The accused was rushed to a hospital for treatment. A country-made .315 bore pistol, a live and an empty cartridge, a Samsung mobile phone, two earrings, a floral nose pin, and a blade were recovered from his possession. "The recovery of the stolen ornaments from him further establishes his involvement in the murder case," DCP Avasthy said. A case was registered against him under BNS Section 103(1) (murder). Police have initiated further legal proceedings against the accused and are investigating whether he was involved in other crimes in the region. Sources in the police revealed that they initially received information about the 65-year-old woman's body found inside her house. On reaching the spot, police found the woman strangled with her throat slit. Three teams were formed, and a case was registered against unknown persons by the daughter of the deceased at the Badalpur police station. "It was earlier suspected that the murder was carried out for property, but the investigations revealed that the accused worked as a labourer in the area and knew the old woman. On Aug 3, he consumed alcohol, entered the victim's house and committed the crime before fleeing. He also took her phone away to transfer the money from her account," the officer said. Former cop, wife booked for abetment to suicide in North Paravur
Kochi: Ernakulam Rural police on Wednesday registered a case of abetment to suicide against a retired police officer and his wife following the death of a homemaker in Kottuvally in North Paravur. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The victim, Asha Benny (46), allegedly ended her life on Tuesday by jumping into a river after what her family described as relentless harassment by the accused over money she had borrowed from them. Police initially booked the accused couple — Pradeep Kumar and his wife, Bindu Pradeep, Asha's neighbours — under BNS Section 194 (unnatural death) but later added BNS Section 108 (abetment to suicide). Police said Asha had borrowed Rs 10 lakh from Bindu two years ago. Family members alleged that despite repaying the loan with interest, Asha was under severe mental stress due to constant demands for additional payments. Just days before her death, she had filed a complaint with the superintendent of police, who forwarded it to the North Paravur police. Both parties were summoned to the station on Tuesday, but the matter was left to be resolved mutually. After returning home, Bindu allegedly went to Asha's house, verbally abusing and threatening her. Later that day, Asha is believed to have jumped into the river near her residence. Fire officers pulled her out, but doctors declared her dead on arrival at the hospital. A suicide note recovered from Asha's house alleged that Pradeep and Bindu had demanded an additional Rs 22 lakh, even after she had settled the original loan with interest. Pradeep Kumar and Bindu have been absconding since Tuesday evening. Their daughter has been called in for questioning. Ernakulam rural superintendent of police M Hemalatha said a special investigation team (SIT) has been formed. "The inquiry will cover all aspects, including financial transactions and the source of income of the accused," she said. Police added that Asha's earlier complaint to the SP, which was transferred to Paravur police, will also be reviewed as part of the probe. Pradeep had earlier been named in a bribery case linked to the 2018 Varapuzha Sreejith custodial death case. He was accused of accepting Rs 15,000 from Sreejith's relatives, promising to have his name removed from the list of accused. Following the inquiry, Pradeep was suspended from service.
