Kerala Health Minister Veena George chairs review meeting on prevention of Nipah virus, says 461 people in Nipah contact list
Health Minister Veena George on Monday said, 'There are currently 461 people in the Nipah contact list in the state. Out of these, 252 are from the Malappuram district and 209 are from the Palakkad district. 27 people are on the high-risk list. They are undergoing treatment in Malappuram, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kannur and Ernakulam districts.'
The minister added, 'Out of 48 people in the contact list, 46 have tested negative. Out of these, 23 are in Manjeri Medical College and 23 in Kozhikode.'
She added that the people on the high-risk list are in quarantine, and all persons on the list have been found.
'It has been ensured that all the people on the high-risk list remain in quarantine. No person in the contact list is left unaccounted for. Police help has been sought for this,' Veena George added.
Earlier on July 4, the health authorities in Kerala issued an alert after two suspected cases of Nipah were found in the state.
Veena George said that the suspected cases of the Nipah virus are from the Palakkad and Malappuram districts. 'An alert has been issued in three districts of Kerala, namely Kozhikode, Malappuram and Palakkad, in connection with two new Nipah virus cases,' she said.
According to official sources, the positive case is that of Bishara Nehrin, an 18-year-old female resident of Mallapuram District. The place of residence is rural, with a nearby forested area and fruit orchards reportedly frequented by Fruit bats. The patient succumbed to the illness on July 1, 2025.
'The post-mortem samples (Serum, CSF, NPS & lung tissue) were sent to Regional VRDL in GMC, Kozhikode on 2nd July and were reported positive by RT-PCR,' they added.
Regarding the other case, sources stated that Hasanath, a 38-year-old female resident of the Pallakad district.
'The patient is presently admitted to a private hospital in Mallapuram and is on ventilatory support. The samples sent to NIV Pune on 4th July 2025 were confirmed to be positive for NiVD Public Health Response,' sources told ANI.
The official sources further said that more than 300 contacts have been identified thus far in 3 districts: Pallakad, Mallapuram and Kozhikode. (ANI)

609 people on Nipah contact list in four dists
T'puram: Across various districts, there are a total of 609 people on the Nipah contact list. Of these, 112 are on the contact list of the second person who tested positive in Palakkad. As many as 207 people in Malappuram, 286 in Palakkad, 114 in Kozhikode and two in Ernakulam are on the contact list. In Malappuram, eight people are under ICU treatment and so far, 72 samples tested negative. In Palakkad, five people are undergoing treatment in isolation. Statewide, 38 people are under observation in the highest risk category and 133 are in the high-risk category. On Sunday, health minister Veena George issued a cautionary directive to hospitals in six districts: Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad and Thrissur. The directive instructs that any cases of fever with Nipah symptoms or encephalitis should be reported.

People warned against visiting hospitals in Palakkad, Malappuram as Nipah scare escalates
Health authorities have warned people to avoid visiting patients in hospitals, particularly in Palakkad and Malappuram districts, in the wake of an increased Nipah scare. To minimise risk, hospitals are limiting attendants to one person per patient and mandating masks for all staff, patients, and caregivers. As health officials compiled the contact list of the 58-year-old man from Kumaramputhur, near Mannarkkad, who succumbed to Nipah at a private hospital in Perinthalmanna on Saturday evening, it was revealed that he had mainly used KSRTC buses for travel. The man's family members, including his wife, children and grandchildren, are among the primary contacts. As a precaution, the school attended by the grandchildren has been shut down. Before his death at the Perinthalmanna hospital, the man had visited three other private hospitals for treatment, which may result in a lengthy contact list. As many as 112 persons who came in contact with him in the last three weeks were traced, and a route map was made by examining, among other things, surveillance camera footage. 609 under observation The number of people under observation for Nipah rose to 609 on Monday. When 207 of them are in Malappuram district, 286 are in Palakkad, 114 in Kozhikode and two in Ernakulam. Fever survey Health officials strengthened their field work in areas where restrictions were imposed by the district administration. A fever survey is also being done. As many as 17 wards in the vicinity of Kumaramputhur were declared as containment zones, covering areas within a three-kilometre radius of the Nipah-infected person's residence. The containment zones included seven wards in Kumaramputhur panchayat, three wards in Karakurissi panchayat, four wards in Mannarkkad municipality and three wards in Karimpuzha panchayat. Crowding is banned in those zones, and shops there can function from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. All educational institutions, including madrasas and anganwadis, have been closed there. There are restrictions on people from outside entering the containment zones.
