Kerala Health Minister Veena George chairs review meeting on prevention of Nipah virus, says 461 people in Nipah contact list
Malappuram (Kerala) [India], July 8 (ANI): Kerala Health Minister Veena George chaired a review meeting regarding the prevention of the Nipah virus at the Collectorate Conference Hall in Malappuram. There are 461 people in the Nipah contact list, out of which 27 people are at a high risk, Health Minister Veena George said. Health Minister Veena George on Monday said, 'There are currently 461 people in the Nipah contact list in the state. Out of these, 252 are from the Malappuram district and 209 are from the Palakkad district. 27 people are on the high-risk list. They are undergoing treatment in Malappuram, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kannur and Ernakulam districts.' The minister added, 'Out of 48 people in the contact list, 46 have tested negative. Out of these, 23 are in Manjeri Medical College and 23 in Kozhikode.' She added that the people on the high-risk list are in quarantine, and all persons on the list have been found. 'It has been ensured that all the people on the high-risk list remain in quarantine. No person in the contact list is left unaccounted for. Police help has been sought for this,' Veena George added. Earlier on July 4, the health authorities in Kerala issued an alert after two suspected cases of Nipah were found in the state. Veena George said that the suspected cases of the Nipah virus are from the Palakkad and Malappuram districts. 'An alert has been issued in three districts of Kerala, namely Kozhikode, Malappuram and Palakkad, in connection with two new Nipah virus cases,' she said. According to official sources, the positive case is that of Bishara Nehrin, an 18-year-old female resident of Mallapuram District. The place of residence is rural, with a nearby forested area and fruit orchards reportedly frequented by Fruit bats. The patient succumbed to the illness on July 1, 2025. 'The post-mortem samples (Serum, CSF, NPS & lung tissue) were sent to Regional VRDL in GMC, Kozhikode on 2nd July and were reported positive by RT-PCR,' they added. Regarding the other case, sources stated that Hasanath, a 38-year-old female resident of the Pallakad district. 'The patient is presently admitted to a private hospital in Mallapuram and is on ventilatory support. The samples sent to NIV Pune on 4th July 2025 were confirmed to be positive for NiVD Public Health Response,' sources told ANI. The official sources further said that more than 300 contacts have been identified thus far in 3 districts: Pallakad, Mallapuram and Kozhikode. (ANI)

Also, 27 individuals, categorized as high-risk contacts, are now in quarantine. Among the two healthcare workers undergoing treatment at Manjeri Medical College, one is a CT scan technician. Of the 48 persons tested from the contact list, 46 have tested negative, she said. This includes 23 persons from Manjeri Medical College and 23 from Kozhikode. "This is a critical period for those who had direct contact with the two patients and we should not take it lightly. A full 21-day quarantine must be followed," said George. She urged residents of Malappuram, Palakkad and Kozhikode to wear masks and added that LSGIs must ensure food is provided to those under quarantine. Education department was directed to grant special casual leave to teachers residing in containment zones and to ensure online classes for affected students. "No one on the contact list should go untraced," she said, adding that police assistance was sought to ensure this. George said no connection has been established between the two cases reported from Palakkad and Malappuram and there is no link between these cases and the case that was reported at Valanchery in May. Surveillance activities were completed across 8,706 households in Malappuram's containment zones to identify individuals with fever. Kerala Nipah virus: After death in Malappuram, patient critical in Palakkad; officials on alert
The condition of a Nipah virus-infected patient reported in north Kerala's Palakkad continued to remain critical, with state health minister Veena George saying that all possible treatment is being provided. A three-kilometre radius around the patient's house has been declared a containment zone,(PTI) The 38-year-old woman, a native of Thachanattukara, is undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College in Kozhikode, news agency PTI reported. Concerns over the woman's critical condition were raised as a Malappuram native succumbed to the virus last week. The health minister said that the woman has been given monoclonal antibody treatment according to the protocol, with the second dose administered on Monday morning. "This is the first Nipah case reported in Palakkad. The patient's condition remains critical, but all available treatment is being provided," the minister told reporters after the meeting. George said that a total of 173 contacts related to the woman have been identified, of whom 100 were primary and 73 secondary. Among them 52 are considered high-risk and 48 are low-risk, she added. After chairing a high-level review meeting at the Palakkad Medical College, which was also attended by the district collector, police chief, and senior health officials, the minister warned of strict action against those spreading false information related to the virus outbreak. On Saturday, the death of an 18-year-old girl was confirmed to have Nipah infection. The patient from Malappuram's Chettiyarangadi succumbed after receiving treatment at a private hospital in Kozhikode. Initial tests suggested Nipah and the infection was subsequently confirmed by Pune's National Institute of Virology (NIV). According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Nipah virus infection is a zoonotic illness that is transmitted from animals to people, and can also be transmitted through contaminated food or directly from one person to another. The virus causes a range of illnesses in infected people, from asymptomatic infection to acute respiratory illness and fatal encephalitis. Nipah can also cause severe disease in animals such as pigs, resulting in significant economic losses for farmers.

Dept traces 58 contacts of Nipah patient; probe begins
: A day after a 42-year-old woman from tested positive for Nipah, ramped up and identified 58 of her contacts. Meanwhile, six symptomatic contacts, who were hospitalized, tested negative on Friday. With this, the total number of persons who tested negative for the virus has risen to Friday, doctors administered monoclonal antibodies to the patient in the ICU, whose condition is serious. Of the 51 high-risk contacts under observation, 12 are her close relatives, three work at Valanchery family health centre, one at a local clinic, 25 at Perinthalmanna hospital and two at different district authorities imposed restrictions and declared nine wards across four local bodies as containment zones. To control the spread, health department has made wearing masks in public mandatory. As a preventive step, fever surveillance will start on Saturday, with health workers set to visit 4,749 houses in four husbandry department will send samples of a cat that died in the woman's neighbourhood to a lab in Bhopal to check for Nipah antibodies.
