Humid start to the week as weather expert hints that 'it's looking good'

It looks like summer could be making a late comeback after an unpredictable few weeks which saw plenty of rain, wind and fluctuating temperatures.
Many will be waking up to a wet and misty start to the week this morning, Monday August 11, but the good news is that the weather is likely to take a turn for the good as the week progresses. This will be music to the ears of Oasis fans lucky enough to secure tickets for the Croke Park concerts this weekend as the forecast is currently looking very positive for Saturday and Sunday.
While there remains some uncertainty in the forecast, one Irish weather expert is optimistic that this coming weekend may see a positive change in conditions.
Alan O'Reilly, who mans the ever-popular @CarlowWeather account on X, posted that "next weekend could see heat return, lots of uncertainty yet on details but it's looking good."
Met Eireann seems to tentatively agree with the prediction, anticipating dry weather and quite high temperatures into the weekend.
Below is the national forecaster's expectations for the week ahead: Monday, August 11
Many places will stay dry today as spells of warm sunshine develop into the afternoon as rain in the north gradually clears. There will be some scattered showers in generally humid conditions, with highs of 26C forecast. Tonight will be largely dry for most areas but some heavy showers could fall in certain areas. Tuesday, August 12
A similar day is expected tomorrow as some spells of warm sunshine are forecast as temperatures will range between 21C and 26C. Wednesday, August 13
Another mild and humid day in store midweek as sunny spells may be broken up by some showery outbreaks and there is the possibility of thunderstorms. Highs of between 21C and 25C are expected. Thursday, August 14
A near-identical day on Thursday as Met Eireann predicts a mixture of cloud and sunny spells with scattered showers in highs of between 21C and 25C. Friday, August 15
Sunny spells are forecast for Friday with light outbreaks of rain breaking up into the afternoon but longer spells of sunshine are forecast later on. Weekend
There remains uncertainty in weather models but current indications suggest that the warm weather will continue and dry conditions are likely but there may be the odd shower at times.

Typhoon Podul hits southern Taiwan, hundreds of flights cancelled

Typhoon Podul hit Taiwan's sparsely populated southeast coast packing winds of up to 191km/h, as a large swathe of southern and eastern parts of the island shut down and hundreds of flights were cancelled. Taiwan is regularly hit by typhoons, generally along its mountainous east coast facing the Pacific. Podul slammed into the south eastern city of Taitung around 1pm (6am Irish time), Taiwan's Central Weather Administration said. "Destructive winds from typhoon expected. Take shelter ASAP," read a text message alert issued to people in parts of Taitung early this morning. The alert warned of gusts above 150km/h in the coming hours. Nine cities and counties announced the suspension of work and school, including the southern metropolises of Kaohsiung and Tainan. In the capital Taipei, home to Taiwan's financial markets, there were blustery winds but no impact. Authorities are also working to evacuate those whose homes were damaged by a July typhoon that brought record winds and damaged the electricity grid in a rare direct hit to Taiwan's west coast. The government said more than 5,500 people had been evacuated ahead of the typhoon's arrival. All domestic flights were cancelled - 252 in total - while 129 international ones were axed too, the transport ministry said. Taiwan's two main international carriers China Airlines and EVA Air said their cancellations were focused on routes out of Kaohsiung, with some flights from the island's main international airport at Taoyuan stopped as well. After making landfall, the storm is expected to hit Taiwan's much more densely populated western coast before heading for China's southern province of Fujian later this week. As much as 600mm of rain was forecast in southern mountainous areas over the next few days, the Central Weather Administration said.
