Images speak louder than words, they say. A trailer for With Hasan in Gaza from Palestinian filmmaker Kamal Aljafari (A Fidai Film, Recollection, An Unusual Summer), which world premieres in the competition lineup of the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival on Aug. 7, abides by that saying.
Below, THR can exclusively reveal the first trailer for the film ahead of the Swiss festival, which runs Aug. 6-16.

'Three MiniDV tapes of life in Gaza from 2001 were recently rediscovered,' reads a synopsis of the movie on the Locarno festival website. 'What started as a search for a former prison mate from 1989 led to an unexpected road trip from the north to the south of Gaza with Hasan, a local guide whose fate remains unknown.'
The summary also promises 'a cinematic reflection on memory, loss, and the passage of time, capturing a Gaza of the past and lives that may never be found again.'
Aljafari, in a director's note, describes the film as 'an homage to Gaza and its people, to all that was erased and that came back to me in this urgent moment of Palestinian existence, or non-existence.' And he highlights: 'It is a film about the catastrophe, and the poetry that resists.'
The movie was produced by the filmmaker through his Kamal Aljafari Productions, with the support of the Doha Film Institute, Cnap – Image/mouvement, the Gwaertler Stiftung, the Columbia Institute for Ideas and Imagination, the Media City Film Festival's Chrysalis Fellowship, and Atelier 105 – Light Cone.
The trailer for With Hasan in Gaza now provides a first glimpse of some of the images captured on this trip through Gaza, including kids approaching the camera and a drive along the coastline.
'I went to Gaza 24 years ago searching for a friend, without an address,' the filmmaker says. 'This is my first film, which I have never made.'

Ron Howard Reveals the Key Advice George Lucas Gave Him About Making SOLO: STAR WARS STORY — GeekTyrant

When Ron Howard stepped in to direct Solo: A Star Wars Story for Lucasfilm, he got one simple but powerful piece of guidance from the man who started it all… George Lucas. Speaking with Vulture, Howard shared: "I talked to him once early, when I was just thinking about doing it. He wasn't active on the films, but he said, 'Just don't forget – it's for 12-year-old boys.'" That one piece of advice shaped Howard's approach to Solo, grounding it in the kind of adventurous spirit and youthful energy that defines the Star Wars legacy. Solo was released in 2018 and it explored the origin of Han Solo and Chewbacca, diving into how they met and their first major heist together, set a decade before A New Hope. Alden Ehrenreich took on the iconic role of Han Solo, joined by Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, with a cast that also included Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Thandiwe Newton, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. I loved this movie and thought that is gave us a great Star Wars adventure! I was happy with what Howard did with the film, and I would've liked to see the story continue with a sequel. Despite the star power and behind-the-scenes effort, the movie received a lukewarm response. It holds a 69% score on Rotten Tomatoes and reportedly lost around $76 million at the box office. Still, Howard's perspective on the film remains clear-eyed and rooted in Lucas' advice. For him, it wasn't about ego or auteurship. It was about making a Star Wars film that stayed true to its core audience, the wide-eyed young fans ready for adventure in a galaxy far, far away. The saga continues next with The Mandalorian & Grogu , hitting theaters on May 22, 2026.

‘Your pain is our pain': Gal Gadot shows solidarity with families at Hostages Square

The visit came amid growing public pressure on the government to prioritize a deal that would secure the release of the remaining hostages. Gal Gadot stopped by to support the hostage families at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv on Sunday, which has been designated as a nationwide day of strikes and demonstrations. In a video posted to the Instagram account bringhomenow, the Israeli actress turned Hollywood superstar spoke with Lishay Miran-Lavi, the wife of Omri Miran, one of the 50 hostages still held in Gaza. In Sunday's Instagram video, Gadot spoke to Miran-Lavi, clasped her hand, and hugged her. Omri Miran was kidnapped by Hamas from Kibbutz Nahal Oz on October 7, leaving behind his wife and two young daughters. Miran-Lavi has been fighting tirelessly for his release all this time. Her husband, now 48, has marked two birthdays in Hamas captivity. The last video and photo of him was released by his kidnappers just before Holocaust Remembrance Day in late April. His family called his continuing captivity a 'disgrace' and said, 'On the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, on which it's customary to say 'never again,' there is an Israeli citizen crying out for help in a Hamas tunnel. This is a disgrace for the State of Israel,' in a statement released by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum. The Instagram bringhomenow account also posted still photos of the Wonder Woman star consoling other hostage families, including Einav Zangauker, the mother of Matan Zangauker, who was kidnapped from his home in Kibbutz Nir Oz with his girlfriend, Ilana Gritzewsky. Gritzewsky was released in November 2023, as part of a hostage deal. Zangauker is one of the most outspoken of the hostage-family activists, and has said that this strike is 'only the beginning.' Gadot has consistently spoken out in support of the hostages and their families, frequently wearing the yellow-hostage pin. Recently, she appeared on the Keshet 12 series, The A Talks, in which she spoke candidly to interviewers on the autism spectrum and expressed her hopes for the swift release of the hostages, echoing her statement at the opening of the Jerusalem Film Festival, where she was a guest of honor, in July. In late July, Gadot met with released hostages Gritzewsky, Doron Steinbrecher, Liri Albag, Naama Levy, and Moran Stella Yanai. Thousands demand hostage deal, halt to Gaza campaign Sunday's protests were part of a coordinated nationwide day of action involving demonstrations in over 300 locations, including Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Haifa. Participants called on the government to end the fighting in Gaza and finalize a deal to bring the remaining hostages home. Dozens of protestors were arrested by police, including in Jerusalem, where officers deployed water cannons near the entrance to Highway 16. Organizers said the strike was the largest since the war began. The demonstrations were led by hostage families and supported by labor unions, university faculty, and tech companies, many of which temporarily closed in solidarity. Apple has picked up the rights to the sports comedy The Dink , directed by Josh Greenbaum (upcoming Spaceballs 2 ) and starring Jake Johnson ( New Girl ). Ben Stiller is on board as a producer and co-star, alongside an all-star cast that includes tennis champions Andy Roddick and John McEnroe, as well as Mary Steenburgen, Ed Harris, Chloe Fineman, Aaron Chen, Patton Oswalt, Chris Parnell and Christine Taylor. Details as to the release plan, including whether the film will hit theaters in addition to streaming, have not yet been disclosed.
