South Korea: PPP apologises for ex-first lady's actions, vows to become more transparent
Seoul: South Korea's conservative People Power Party (PPP) apologised on Wednesday for the past actions of former first lady Kim Keon Hee, saying it will become more transparent about the personal affairs of a president's wife.
Rep. Kim Yong-tae, the PPP's interim leader, made the apology in a press conference at the National Assembly as the next presidential election is less than two weeks away on June 3.
"The People Power Party respectfully apologises to the people for having failed to fathom the people's concerns about first lady Kim Keon Hee's past actions," he said. "The People Power Party promises to reflect deeply and change fundamentally."
The party leader made three promises, starting with a "transparent vetting" of the first lady to satisfy the people's right to know.
"The first lady may have past mistakes, but we will not hide them for being in the private sphere," he said.
The PPP will also endow a public role and responsibility to the first lady and disclose transparently how her official budget is executed while holding her legally accountable in the event she abuses her official authority or commits an illegal act, he said.
In addition, the party will make systemic changes to ensure the president's family, relatives and close acquaintances are inspected and surveilled transparently.
Kim, the wife of ousted South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, was under constant public scrutiny during her husband's term amid allegations that she illegally accepted a luxury bag, meddled in candidate nominations for elections and engaged in other irregularities, Yonhap news agency reported.
According to legal sources on Wednesday, the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office recently seized Kim's cellphone as part of a reinvestigation into her alleged involvement in a stock manipulation scheme.
The reinvestigation began last month after the Supreme Court confirmed the convictions of nine people involved in the manipulation of stock prices of Deutsch Motors, a BMW dealer in South Korea, from 2009-2012.

Classys filed a lawsuit demanding ₩3.00 billion KRW (about $2.19 million USD) in penalties after cutting ties with the actor following the Kim Sae Ron controversy. Reportedly, two more advertisers are expected to follow with similar legal moves. While his one-man agency likely has little say in the matter, his legal team has called the seizure unjustified. Labelling Soo Hyun as a victim of Garos Sero, who himself is on the verge of facing police summons in connection with another reopened case involving YouTuber Tzuyang, the counsel admitted that while the advertisers who signed the actor may be suffering financially, the real blame should fall on Kim Se Ui. Classys reportedly filed the case on May 8, and Seoul Eastern Court approved the seizure order on May 20. This makes him a direct participant in the whistleblower case, where the accused is facing multiple charges, defamation, privacy breach, stalking, and spreading malicious claims backed by fabricated evidence. When pressed by media on why Kim was listed as a creditor for the real estate seizure, the firm explained that, as part of the process, Kim would have to submit his personal information to the registration office. Being a public figure, he chose not to, and instead opted to participate solely in the seizure of the bank account.

A woman in South Korea has been fined 2.8 million won (or $2,000 approximately) for a 'pantsing' prank on a male colleague. A court in the country Gangwon province ruled that her act of pulling down the colleague's trousers, and accidentally his underwear, constituted sexual misconduct. According to a report in The Korea Herald, the Chuncheon District Court on Saturday ordered the woman to complete eight hours of sexual violence prevention education in addition to the $2,000 fine. On October 3, 2024, the woman pulled down the pants of a male colleague in front of other coworkers. The incident occurred at the restaurant where they both worked. While pulling down his pants, she accidentally pulled down his underwear too. The woman is in her 50s, while the target of her prank is a man in his 20s. A judge in Chuncheon District Court, South Korea, dismissed the defendant's claim that the act was meant to be a joke. The prosecution alleged that the woman's 'prank' caused sexual humiliation and filed charges of indecent act by compulsion. Siding with the prosecution, the court then ordered her to pay a fine and complete eight hours of sexual violence prevention education. While passing the sentence, the court took into account the fact that the woman had no prior criminal record, showed remorse over her actions, and apologised to the victim and his parents while kneeling. Pantsing refers to the act of pulling down someone's trousers as a prank, usually in a public setting. It's often done to embarrass the person and has been called a form of bullying.
