Trey Hendrickson, Jonnu Smith, T.J. Watt among early NFL holdouts
The majority of NFL teams started their minicamps Tuesday. Players who do not report to the sessions are subject to fines.
Hendrickson, who led the NFL with 17.5 sacks last season, continues to be a major off-season storyline. The Bengals edge rusher, who was given permission to seek a trade earlier this off-season, also did not participate in voluntary workouts amid a contract dispute.
Hendrickson initially signed a four-year, $60 million deal with the Bengals in 2021. He signed a one-year extension for that deal in 2023. He is set to make $15.8 million in base salary in 2025.
"Obviously it's a possibility," Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow told reporters, when asked about if he thought about Hendrickson leaving the Bengals roster. "It's not one that I think would make us a better team. We'll see what ends up happening. I don't know what's going to happen."
Bengals rookie pass rusher Shemar Stewart, the No. 17 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft who has yet to sign his first contract, attended minicamp, but did not participate in activities.

Smith, who totaled career-highs in catches (88), yards (884) and touchdowns (eight) last season, also has been circulating in trade rumors amid a contract dispute with the Dolphins. He signed a two-year, $8.4 million contract with the AFC East franchise last off-season.
"You will not see Jonnu on the field today, or this week," Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said. "That's something we've been in communication with."
Watt, a four-time first-team All-Pro and 2021 Defensive Player of the Year, signed a four-year, $112 million deal in 2021. He also is seeking a contract extension.
Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin and Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey were among the other notable players absent Tuesday from minicamp.
McLaurin, who signed a three-year, $68.3 million extension in 2022, is seeking a new contract. The Dolphins, who are attempting to trade Ramsey, granted the cornerback an excused absence.
Most NFL mandatory minicamps will continue this week, while some teams will start their minicamps next week.

New York Giants are NFL's third-most valuable franchise
The New York Giants have a long and storied history that only a few NFL franchises can claim. The Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears, and Green Bay Packers are the only three teams that have been active for longer than the Giants, but a team's longevity in the league doesn't have much bearing on what that organization is worth today. For example, the Dallas Cowboys joined the league in 1960, nearly 40 years after the Giants, yet they are the most valuable franchise in 2025. Sportico released its annual NFL valuations on Wednesday, and the Cowboys top the list. The Giants, though, finally broke the $10 billion mark and have become the third-most valuable team in the NFL. The Giants' valuation is up 34 percent from 2024. Below the team valuations listed on Sportico's site is an explanation of how they determined the values, what assets they counted, etc. Part of the explanation is as follows: 2025 Valuation: The sum of the enterprise value of an NFL franchise combined with the value of team-related businesses and real estate holdings. Team Value: NFL franchise valuation, derived from metrics by which football-team transactions occur, including aggregating local and national revenues and factoring in a team-specific multiplier. This represents the market value of the team itself, excluding related businesses held by its owners. It includes the value of each franchise's 3.13% interest in the league's properties, including NFL Films, NFL RedZone, 32 Equity (the private equity investment vehicle established by the NFL in 2013) and its digital platforms, which are acquired/dispossessed in tandem with the sale of a team. There is an additional category for Team-Related Businesses and Real Estate Holdings, which is broken down in a way that attempts to eliminate counting any money coming to the team that's not directly related to football operations. Of the top five teams with the highest valuation, only the Cowboys and Giants have missed the Super Bowl for the last 10 years, which proves that just because a franchise is worth more money, it doesn't mean they field a better football team. This year, the Giants have a chance to prove that they've located the train tracks and are getting back on board. Being one of the top-valued teams in the league, they need to start showing it on the field. They don't have to make the playoffs in 2025, although that is always the goal. If they can put together a winning season and pass the eye test, it will go a long way toward the team being worth what it's valued at. Michael Penix Jr. involved in scuffle during Falcons joint practice with Titans
Tempers flared during Wednesday's joint practice between the Atlanta Falcons and Tennessee Titans and quarterback Michael Penix Jr. found himself in the middle of the scuffle. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] After Penix hit Ray-Ray McCloud III on a deep pass, Penix was exchanging pleasantries with Titans defenders when things went from heated to physical. The Falcons quarterback ended up in the middle of a pile as players from both teams ran over from the sidelines. 'They had a lot of words throughout practice, so I gave them my words and it just went a little bit too far," said a smiling Penix. There were no reported injuries from the incident and Penix was out on the field for the next series. Several instances of pushing and shoving occurred after that, but no punches appeared to have been thrown. "[Penix] started it on that one, on Team 1," said Titans linebacker Arden Key, via ESPN. "But again, those guys in Atlanta, they protected the quarterback, which they were supposed to do. O-line came in, did what they did, and we wasn't allowing that, but that's what they were supposed to do." Penix was appreciative of his teammates coming to his aid before anything escalated saying, "A lot of guys asked me if I was good, and it was good to know that those guys had my back." The second-year Falcons quarterback joked he blacked out during the fight and that he was "somebody else out there." Not one to initiate trash talk, Penix said he's not afraid to give it right back to opponent who thinks he doesn't have the ability to dish it out. "They probably looked at me as just the quarterback, [that] I wasn't that type of person," Penix said. "But I'm from Tampa. I'm from Dade City. ... There's a respect part about it. We're all playing, we're all competing at a high level, but when disrespect comes in, it's like, 'All right, this ain't football no more.'" Falcons head coach Raheem Morris has already announced that Penix will not play on Friday in the team's second preseason game against the Titans. Kirk Cousins will also likely sit with Easton Stick and Emory Jones seeing action.
