Terengganu royals extend condolences to families of UPSI tragedy victims
KUALA TERENGGANU, June 10 — The Sultan of Terengganu, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, and the Sultanah of Terengganu, Sultanah Nur Zahirah, have extended their heartfelt condolences to the families of the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who perished in the tragic bus crash along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, early yesterday morning.
Datuk Pengelola Seri Bijaya Diraja, Datuk Mohd Sophian Abu Bakar, in a statement today, said Their Royal Highnesses expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and prayed for the bereaved families to remain strong and patient in facing this profound test from Allah S.W.T.
He added that Sultan Mizan and Sultanah Nur Zahirah also prayed for the swift recovery of those still undergoing treatment and for all related matters to be eased.
'Their Royal Highnesses are deeply saddened by the horrific tragedy that befell the 15 students and their families. They pray that the souls of the departed be placed among the righteous,' he said.
The accident occurred between 12.30 and 1.00am when the students' chartered bus travelling from Jertih to Tanjung Malim overturned following a collision with a Perodua Alza along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding.
Thirty-three others were injured, including the bus driver and attendant, along with the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza. — Bernama

AGC rejects Najib's bid to drop SRC RM27m money laundering charges, court to decide on DNAA by June 20
KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has rejected Datuk Seri Najib Razak's representation to drop his three money laundering charges involving SRC International Sdn Bhd funds amounting to RM27 million. The decision was related to the High Court during today's case management on the status of the representation submitted to the AGC in 2023. Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul said the prosecution was therefore prepared to proceed with the trial, but also asked for the court to fix longer trial dates to allow for the compilation of voluminous trial documents. Najib's lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah then suggested to court to grant his client a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) in the interest of justice as trial has been indefinitely postponed since 2019. A DNAA means an accused person can face trial for the same charges in the future if the prosecution decides to reinstate them. 'I am suggesting for the court to grant a DNAA. This will remove pressure from both sides,' he said, adding that the prosecution can decide further when everything is in order to proceed with trial at a later date. On the matter of DNAA, Ashrof said he would leave it to the court's discretion as his explicit instructions were to proceed with the trial and therefore cannot agree to the defence's request. 'We cannot agree to the DNAA as we have indicated we are prepared to proceed with trial, however, on issue of documentations we need time,' he said. High Court Judge K. Muniandy later fixed June 20 to decide on the defence's application for DNAA. On February 3, 2019, the former prime minister claimed trial to the three charges of money laundering by accepting illegal proceeds amounting to RM27 million through his three AmPrivate Banking accounts at AmIslamic Bank Berhad, AmBank Group Building, Jalan Raja Chulan on July 8, 2014. He was charged under Section 4 (1) (a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001, which is punishable by a maximum fine of RM5 million or imprisonment of up to five years, or both upon conviction. The former Pekan MP is currently serving a jail term in Kajang Prison for the misappropriation of RM42 million in the SRC International funds case. On September 2, 2022, he filed a petition for a royal pardon, following which on January 29 the Pardons Board halved his jail term from 12 to six years and reduced the fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.

Police: Bus driver in crash that killed 15 UPSI students had 18 summonses, 13 for speeding
PETALING JAYA, June 10 — The driver of the bus involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students yesterday had a record of 18 traffic summonses, according to Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement department director Yusri Hassan Basri. According to Sinar Harian, Yusri said 13 of the summonses were for speeding, three for not wearing a seatbelt, one for failing to have a third brake light, and another for involvement in a previous accident. He added that a special task force involving police, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research, the road transport department, the Land Public Transport Agency, and other relevant bodies has been formed to investigate the crash. 'We will complete the investigation papers as soon as possible. Our investigation will be thorough and cover all aspects, including the driver's past offences, background, activities and career history,' he was quoted as saying. The crash occurred early Monday morning when the bus, travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to UPSI's campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, collided with the rear of a Perodua Alza, veered off the road, and overturned along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding. Sinar Harian reported that the task force's findings will address potential safety lapses and preventive measures.

Chilling aftermath: Rescuers inspecting the accident scene where the family's car plunged into a ravine after being hit by a speeding bus. — Bernama BALING: Teacher Mohd Lutfi Radzi, 37, had gone back to Terengganu with his wife, Nurul Ain Zakaria, also a teacher, for Hari Raya Aidiladha. The couple, with their two children, had left Terengganu to return home to Kedah on Sunday night. Then, the unthinkable happened. A speeding bus went out of control and slammed into the back of their car, sending the multi-purpose vehicle careening into a ravine. Nurul Ain Zakaria, 35, suffered an injury to her left rib, while her daughter, Nur Aisyah Nafishah Mohd Lutfi, 6, broke her right leg. Nur Aisyah's younger brother, Muhammad Ahsan Nafis, 2, was flung out of the car into a drain. Thankfully, an X-ray examination at Hospital Baling showed he did not suffer any major injuries. 'Mohd Lutfi has been discharged but is still taking care of his wife and children in the hospital,' according to his mother, Norlian Abd Halim, 58. Norlian said her son and daughter-in-law had travelled back to Terengganu the previous week to celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha with Nurul Ain's family. She told Bernama she had tried calling Mohd Lutfi on the day they left for Terengganu, but he did not answer. He only returned her call at 8.30am on Monday. 'He told me his family was involved in an accident ... I later saw the video of the accident, but I was too shocked to watch it till the end,' she said. However, she was grateful that the family did not lose their lives in the accident. 'I hope my son, my daughter-in-law and two grandchildren recover quickly,' she said when met at her home in Pondok Ustaz Bakar, Parit Panjang, near here, yesterday. Police have recorded a statement from Mohd Lutfi but are still waiting to record a statement from the other members of the family who are still warded in Hospital Baling, said Perak police chief Comm Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin.
