Original 1977 Star Wars film to be screened by BFI

The original 1977 cinematic release of Star Wars will be shown on the big screen this summer in London, marking its first public screening in decades.
The original version of the sci-fi blockbuster will be shown as part of the British Film Institute (BFI)'s Film on Film festival on 12 June.
The BFI said this version of the film is rarely publicly screened since George Lucas' produced special editions were released in the 1990s, altering some plot points and adding other CGI characters.
Today, only the updated versions are available on official streaming platforms and Blu-ray, making screenings of the film's original cut rare.
Senior curator of fiction at the BFI National Archive, James Bell, said the festival was a "true showcase" of the national collection.
"Every print in the programme is a unique object, with its own life story, and they all bear their scars with pride," he said.
"They put us at touching distance to the past, and we can't wait for audiences to experience them all.
"We're grateful for the generous support from philanthropic champions who have helped us deliver a rich and exciting programme that keeps Film on Film alive."
Lucas's changes to key plot points, including the addition of Jabba the Hutt and other special effects upgrades, have long divided fans.
The most controversial revision was the scene where Harrison Ford's Han Solo shoots dead bounty hunter Greedo.
In the original version, Solo shoots first. However, the 1997 re-release changed the scene to show Ford's character responding in self-defence.
The scene underwent further edits, with other versions of the film showing the pair firing at the same time.
Among the festival's other highlights is an original screening of the original US pilot of Twin Peaks, presented by the show's star Kyle MacLachlan.
BFI's Film on Film Festival will take place at BFI Southbank and BFI Imax from 12-15 June.

Australia's first official Star Wars café just landed at Melbourne Museum

Calling all Jedis! If you or someone you know is a major Star Wars fan, then in the words of Yoda: very good news, we have. Australia's first official Star Wars café opened its doors at Melbourne Museum on June 7, a one-of-a-kind pop-up to delight children and adults alike. While it's a pity it couldn't have opened on May the 4th to coincide with the day the nerds among us say to each other "May the fourth be with you", we couldn't be more excited to board this culinary spaceship. Museums Victoria has worked together with both Disney and Lucasfilm to bring the immersive eatery – an idyllic lunch spot to grab a blue milk and a bite to eat before or after you've viewed the museum's Lego Star Wars exhibition – to life, with fans of all ages set to feel like they're dining in a galaxy far, far away. The Star Wars Galactic Café invites visitors to dine aboard the Corellian Star Cruiser and we're told there may be Stormtroopers about – so remember to bring your light saber! The menu features kooky options like the vegan Sorgan Burger (a chickpea and kale patty stacked with greens, avocado and pickles inside a potato bun), the Vietnamese-inspired Naboo Garden Vermicelli (a noodle dish featuring plump prawns, fresh herbs, nuoc cham, shallots and a sprinkling of toasted peanuts), and a zingy Outer Rim chicken katsu. Gluten-free options are available, and for a salty side, try the Asteroid Fields golden sweet potato wedges and sour cream. Whatever you do, don't skip dessert: a rich bitter chocolate parfait with sponge and crushed Oreos (Death Star by Chocolate) or a Chewie gingerbread cookie. And it wouldn't be a true Star Wars dining experience without blue milk, so you can also expect the iconic Tatooine beverage here. "Combining world-class hospitality with the timeless appeal of the Star Wars galaxy, the Star Wars Galactic Café offers Melbourne Museum's visitors yet another way to engage with this premier exhibition, in a cosmically cool atmosphere," said Museums Victoria CEO and director Lynley Crosswell. The Star Wars Galactic Café is open at Melbourne Museum from 10.30am to 3.30pm daily. More than 2000 people have already snapped up a table, so if you don't want to miss out – make a booking here.

The programme for the Edinburgh International Book Festival has been revealed, with speakers including former first minister Nicola Sturgeon, author Irvine Welsh and MP Diane Abbott. Authors Maggie O'Farrell and Alexander McCall Smith are also on the line-up, along with comedian Julian Clary and actors Viggo Mortensen, Sam Heughan and Dame Vanessa Redgrave. Performances at the festival, which runs from August 9 to 24, include Fun Lovin' Crime Writers – a band which involves novelists Chris Brookmyre and Val McDermid. Sturgeon will launch her memoir, Frankly, and will be in conversation with journalist Kirsty Wark as part of the Front List series. Sports commentator Ally McCoist will give a talk on his career, and former first minister Henry McLeish will join academic James Mitchell for a discussion on Scottish devolution and how it has progressed. PA Media Nicola Sturgeon will discuss her new memoir, Frankly (PA) The core theme of this year's festival is Repair, and organisers said it will be 'seeking to explore the many things around us which feel broken, and how we might seek to fix them'. Others on the line-up include historian David Starkey, while former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable will give a talk about shifting economic powers, and commentator Ash Sarkar will 'tear into the morals of identity politics'. Festival director Jenny Niven said: 'This year's key theme of Repair starts from the belief that the brilliant ideas of writers and thinkers can help us repair a host of seemingly 'broken' things in our society, from the cycle of fast fashion and our relationship with the environment, to cultural reparations and the state of our politics. 'It's a statement of hope and resilience, and an invitation for our audiences to think about what 'repair' might mean for them. 'At a time when important conversations can feel impossible to have without igniting conflict and anger, we want the Edinburgh International Book Festival to provide a safe place for challenging but considered discussions. 'This year our programme features over 600 writers and artists from 35 countries, who have a wide range of perspectives on topics of personal, social and global importance. 🎟️The Front List 2025 is now on sale! 🎟️ Our first events of 2025 are now on sale!
