Misleading ads repeatedly dupe Google users, CBS News New York Investigation finds

CBS News22-05-2025
It's the most popular search engine, and one of the most profitable companies in the world. So why does Google sell advertisements to people purporting to be companies it is not?
CBS News New York's Tim McNicholas, a regular Amtrak rider, recently Googled "Amtrak customer service," and the first three results showed websites and phone numbers that don't belong to Amtrak, even though the links stated "Amtrak" or "Amtrak Phone Number."
Two of the sites, vactionntravel.com and travelonumbers.com, even have self-described Amtrak booking pages, boasting of a "user-friendly platform" that "allows you to reserve your seats ... hassle-free."
"I think that's pretty terrible," Laura Black said.
Black said she called the number on another site, thereservationsdesk.com, and paid $356 to upgrade her Amtrak trip from New Orleans to Charlottesville back in March.
"It was a fraudulent ticket," Black said. "I was actually really shocked that you can Google something and the top hit, it's a scammer? Like, how does that happen? So I guess I felt betrayed by the process a bit."
Amtrak and Google both describe the listings as "scams," so how do they rise to the top of the search results? Turns out, they are sponsored listings, or ads, and Google says it has now suspended the accounts of those advertisers.
The listings linked to a phone number so you didn't even have to visit the website before calling.
In 2020, McNicholas shared the warnings of a mom from the Chicago suburbs who sent $5,000 to a Google advertiser pretending to be Apple customer support.
"My guard was completely down," Abbey Coffey said at the time. "I get those phishing emails, you don't click on the link it's a scam, but I called them. So me calling them, my guard was completely down."
Google would not agree to an interview for this story, but said in an email it removed 146 million ads last year for misrepresentation. A spokesperson said that figure includes ads that were blocked before posting, and also ads that were already live on Google.
"That makes me wonder what's going on in the process that they got to put those ads up in the first place? Is there not any sort of background check?" Black said.
Google says all ads go through either automated or human reviews, but alleged fraudsters are constantly adapting and sometimes find ways to show Google different content than they later show users.
McNicholas called the numbers he found during his Google search, and the people who answered claimed to offer tickets cheaper than what Amtrak was offering. When asked, a self-described employee with vacationntravel.com said that the company is not Amtrak but is authorized to sell Amtrak tickets. He denied any knowledge of the company's Google ad, which included a link titled "Amtrack [cq] Phone Number" above a phone number that does not belong to Amtrak.
"Is there maybe a manager or owner who can give us a call?" McNicholas asked.
He never heard back, so he moved on to the number Black called and whoever answered said they don't sell train tickets and know nothing about thereservationsdesk.com.
McNicholas discovered shortly after he reached out that the website had been taken down.
"Now I have to fight with my credit card. It's gonna be two months 'til I see that money back, if I see it back. There's no guarantees, and it's unfortunate," Black said.
Amtrak says customers should stick to booking through Amtrak.com, the Amtrak app, 1-800 USA RAIL, or in-person at a train station.
The company also says it has an internal team dedicated to working with search engines to scrub what Amtrak considers scams.

It's beach time, amusement park time for one Nevada football team after win

High school football began on Friday night in California, and no one was having more fun than the tourists/players from Sparks, Nev., the Spanish Springs High Cougars. They flew in Friday morning on Southwest Airlines, with plans to visit the Santa Monica Pier on Saturday and Six Flags Magic Mountain on Sunday. First up was a game against Simi Valley, and it went better than expected. Brady Hummel, a senior receiver and the son of coach Robert Hummel, caught 14 passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-21 victory. There were 11 turnovers, with Simi Valley losing four fumbles and getting intercepted twice. Hummel was so wide open on one touchdown because of a Simi Valley secondary communication error that he could have been counting one Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi and still would have been wide open. Quarterback Tyson McNeil passed for 211 yards. From the opening kickoff, when Jackson Sundeen returned it for a 96-yard touchdown, the Pioneers were trying to come from behind. The two teams combined for seven turnovers in the first half. Spanish Springs held a 20-14 halftime lead. Micah Hannah and James Scida each had interceptions for Simi Valley. The Pioneers lost three fumbles. Quarterback Connor Petrov had touchdown passes of 29 yards on fourth down to Quentin McGahan and 50 yards to Cole Alejo. In the second half, Petrov was intercepted twice and also lost a fumble that turned into a touchdown. Simi Valley was 12-2 last season and defeated the Cougars in Nevada, but two new quarterbacks and a rebuilt offensive line has the Pioneers working to improve. "We'll bounce back," Hannah said. As for playing against Hummel, Hannah gave up a touchdown against him, but also picked off one of his passes. "He's smooth," Hannah said. Los Alamitos came away with a 20-12 win over Inglewood. A two-yard touchdown run Lenny Ibarra put Los Alamitos ahead for good. Los Alamitos is headed to Hawaii next week. In Henderson, Nev., Long Beach Millikan defeated Foothill 27-14. Tight end/defensive end Jude Nelson had two sacks and made nine catches. Quarterback Ashton Pannell threw two touchdown passes. Sign up for the L.A. Fatal shooting at Sacramento's William Land Park sparks calls for tighter security measures

Neighbors are calling for a park policy change following a fatal shooting at Sacramento's William Land Park. The shooting happened at night when the park is supposed to be closed, but neighbors say that's not always enforced. The male victim was found shot and killed inside a car on 13th Avenue inside William Land Park early Thursday morning. "It's shocking. It's not what we want to experience in any of our parks in Sacramento," said Kristina Rogers, president of the Land Park Community Association. Rogers said that the park has many family-friendly attractions, including the Sacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town. "It happened in a very quiet neighborhood part of the park, right next to a children's playground," she said. "That's really hard for us to accept." Rogers' neighborhood organization has been asking the city to change its park security policy for years. The park closes to the public at sunset, but she said the metal gates that prevent cars from driving through are not closed and the public bathroom near the shooting scene is not locked after hours. "When you have open gates and open bathrooms at night when the park is closed, that seems to be the time when a lot of the criminal behavior starts to show up," she said. Jeff Strenk lives across from the crime scene and wants the nighttime park closure to be enforced. "If there were to be locked at night, I think that would go a long way towards improving security," Strenk said. Now, following this violent crime, it appears there is a change coming. A representative in City Councilmember Rick Jenning's office said that the park bathrooms will now be locked at sundown. We broke the news to Strenk. "That's awesome," he said. "I think that's a great idea, a great decision and probably long overdue." Sacramento police say no arrests have been made in connection with this shooting, and the name of the victim has not yet been released.
