Indian Families Rush to Secure U.S. Green Cards Before $5 Million Hike Kicks In
The EB5 visa programme, which currently allows foreign nationals to gain U.S. permanent residency by investing $800,000 (approximately ₹ 7 crore) and creating ten American jobs, may soon become significantly more expensive. U.S. President Donald Trump is proposing to raise the investment threshold to $5 million, a change that would price out thousands of hopeful applicants, especially from India, where interest in U.S. migration remains high.
'We are already seeing a surge in demand,' said Deepesh during a recent podcast interview on Finance with Sharan - The One Percent Show. 'Indian families who were earlier on the fence are now accelerating their applications. Many of them understand this could be their last affordable chance at securing a U.S. Green Card.'
A key point of discussion during the interview was the availability of collateral-free loans of up to $300,000, sourced from within the U.S. itself, to help applicants based in the U. S. meet the EB5 investment requirement. These loans come with a typical annual interest rate of 5.95 percent.
Deepesh explained that many Indians, including those without the full investment amount, are taking this route to give their children a chance at a better future. 'I've seen families with less than ₹ 1 crore in total savings take out loans to apply,' he said. 'For them, it's not just about moving to the U.S. It's about long-term security, education, and opportunities.'
The U.S. caps EB5 visas at 10,000 per year globally, with only 700 allocated per country. That restriction, combined with high demand from Indian applicants, could mean long wait times if investors miss the current window.
'There's already a long waiting period just to get a U.S. tourist visa,' said Deepesh. 'Imagine the queue once people realise this $800,000 route may disappear. We are advising serious applicants to begin paperwork within the next three months if they want to qualify under the existing rules.'
When asked why affluent Indians are increasingly choosing the EB5 route, Deepesh pointed to quality of life as a primary driver. 'It's not about abandoning India. It's about what the U.S. offers — clean air, working infrastructure, and a transparent system. You pay taxes, and you see the results.'
He also clarified a common misconception: applying for a U.S. Green Card does not require Indians to give up their citizenship. 'You retain your Indian passport until you decide to apply for U.S. citizenship, usually after five years,' he said.
One of the podcast's most notable revelations was that middle-income families are also using the EB5 programme, thanks to flexible financial arrangements. Deepesh mentioned cases where even families with partial funds have managed to secure the investment by using loan assistance from Banks, friends, and family.
The EB5 visa grants permanent residency, unlike temporary options such as student visas or H1B work permits, which are limited by quotas and job status. 'With a Green Card, your stay in the U.S. doesn't depend on a job offer or employer sponsorship,' Deepesh said. 'It's called permanent residency for a reason. It gives families the peace of mind they're looking for.'
Deepesh advised prospective applicants not to delay. 'Even if you're not ready with the full amount, begin the legal process now. The rules could change anytime, and once the new threshold is in place, it's unlikely to be reversed.'

India's energy sector is rising through global uncertainty: Hardeep Puri
Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Sunday that India's energy sector is rising through global uncertainty with the reforms that have been rolled out in the oil and gas sector. "While the world faces fuel volatility, India is moving ahead with reforms. Oil refining capacity in the country has increased from 215 to 258 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA), and Jamnagar is now Asia's largest refinery, exporting petroleum products to 100+ countries," the minister said in a post on X. Highlighting the reforms in the upstream oil & gas exploration and production segment, the minister said that the open acreage licensing policy (OALP) Round 10 has unlocked 2.5 lakh sq km for further exploration and production. The clearances required for exploration have also been reduced from 37 to 18 to facilitate the ease of doing business. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision is driving India's energy security through resilience with over $1.3 billion having been invested in the upstream segment to increase oil exploration and production," he said. The minister has also recently highlighted in the Parliament that India is witnessing a renewed surge in oil and gas exploration with the opening of nearly one million square kilometres of erstwhile 'No-Go' offshore areas in 2022. Since 2015, Exploration and Production (E&P) companies operating in India have reported 172 hydrocarbon discoveries, including 62 in offshore areas. Puri highlighted the geological significance of the AN basin, which lies at the junction of the Andaman and Nicobar Basins within the Bengal-Arakan sedimentary system. The tectonic setting, located at the boundary of the Indian and Burmese plates, has led to the formation of numerous stratigraphic traps that are conducive to hydrocarbon accumulation. This geological promise is further amplified by the basin's proximity to proven petroleum systems in Myanmar and North Sumatra. The region has attracted renewed global interest following significant gas discoveries in South Andaman offshore Indonesia, underlining the geological continuity across the region, the minister explained. In a significant development, ONGC and Oil India Ltd (OIL) have launched an ambitious exploration campaign in the Andaman ultra-deepwater region. For the first time, drilling operations are targeting depths of up to 5,000 metres. One such wildcat well, ANDW-7, drilled in a carbonate play in the East Andaman Back Arc region, has yielded encouraging geological insights. These include traces of light crude and condensate in cutting samples, heavy hydrocarbons like C-5 neo-pentane in trip gases, the minister further stated. These findings establish, for the first time, the existence of an active thermogenic petroleum system in the region, comparable to those in Myanmar and North Sumatra. While commercial reserves remain to be established, this campaign has validated the presence of a working petroleum system and laid the foundation for focused exploration in the area, the minister said. Providing an overview of the exploration outcomes so far, the Minister informed that ONGC has made hydrocarbon discoveries in 20 blocks, with an estimated reserve of 75 million metric tonnes of oil equivalent (MMTOE). Oil India Ltd., on its part, has made seven oil and gas discoveries over the past four years, with reserves estimated at 9.8 million barrels of oil and 2,706.3 million standard cubic meters of gas.

Kerala students prefer higher education in Europe over the US
A combination of flexible visa policies, lower tuition fees, affordable living costs, and a streamlined admissions process is prompting students from Kerala to favour European universities over those in the United States and even Canada. Besides, post-study work permits and diverse cultural experiences have made multiple foreign destinations, once viewed only as tourist spots, appealing choices for international students. 'It has become increasingly difficult for Indians to secure jobs or get permanent residency in the US. Thousands are still waiting for over 20 years for permanent residency. We are allowed to stay there for three years after the studies, but getting the visa extended is a lottery,' said Dion Saji from Manasseri in Kozhikode, who is preparing to leave for higher studies in the Netherlands. Akshay Menon from Ernakulam feels that limited career opportunities due to the administration favouring citizens over foreigners are the main reasons for most students choosing not to go to the US. 'I have friends in the US who got rejected in several job interviews just because of their nationality. Despite the claim of inclusiveness, getting a job in the US is tricky for us', added Mr. Menon, who too has opted to complete his post-graduation in Germany. Most universities in Germany offer free education. Many of the European countries offer post-study visas for 18 months to two years that enable the students to stay back and seek employment. 'Unlike in the US, where opportunities to earn while you learn are limited and time-bound, Europe offers better work-life balance,' Mr. Saji said. Although the diplomatic friction between India and Canada appears to be settled, the State Bank of India, India's biggest public sector bank, is yet to lift the suspension of several leading Canadian universities from its Global Ed-Vantage education loan programme, which enabled students to access collateral-free loans of up to ₹50 lakh at leading universities across the globe. Anju P., a student from Kozhikode, had France as the first option for her post-graduation dreams in the travel and tourism sector. 'Most European countries offer a cultural experience as well. With a single student visa, we can travel across 26 nations. We get to experience various cultures along with our academics', she said. Remya M.G., a high school teacher and parent of a student seeking higher education in the UK, said, 'I know some students who went to Canada and have been struggling to get a job for years.' While Germany and the UK are hot favourites among the students, countries like Latvia, Malta, Lithuania, and Poland are also much sought after. 'We are processing at least 200 applications for education loans in every district of the State at present from students seeking higher education in the UK', said a consultant for a leading nationalised bank in the country. While studying in European countries poses a language challenge for most, the students seem willing to face this challenge head-on. There are a number of institutions in Kerala that offer training in foreign languages to equip the interested students for a flourishing career in European countries. 'There was a time when everyone blindly chose Canada or the US. Those days are long gone; students now choose their study destinations wisely,' said Mohammed Shuhaib, who heads an educational consultancy in Kozhikode.
