Google's AI can now make phone calls for you

The Verge4 days ago
Google will now let everyone in the US call local businesses using AI. The feature, which is now available in Search, allows you to use AI for pricing or availability information without having to talk on the phone.
Google first started testing this feature in January, and it's still only available for certain kinds of businesses, like pet groomers, dry cleaners, and auto shops. When you search for one of these services, like a pet groomer, Google will display a new 'have AI check pricing' prompt beneath the business listing.
Google will then ask you for more information about your request, such as what kind of pet you have, its breed, and the types of services that you need. It will also ask when you need the service and how you want to receive updates, such as email or text. This feature might prove popular among those younger users, whom studies have shown struggle with making phone calls.
Robby Stein, Google Search's vice president of product, notes that the company's Gemini model uses Duplex to make calls. 'Gemini, with Duplex tech, will be able to make calls on your behalf,' Stein tells The Verge, adding that the calling tool will 'announce itself as an AI from Google trying to get information on behalf of a customer and get your info and details conveyed so that you don't have to spend all of this time doing this.' After the AI gets the information it needs, it will provide an update over text about available times or prices.
Business owners can opt out of receiving AI calls in their profile settings on Google. Though this feature is now generally available, Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will receive 'higher limits' that allow them to use the feature more.
In addition to widely rolling out its agentic calling tool, Google has also started testing its more advanced Gemini 2.5 Pro in AI Mode, the AI-powered search tool that Google brought to everyone in the US in May. AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers who have opted into the AI Mode experiment in Labs can now choose Gemini 2.5 Pro, which Stein says works 'particularly great for advanced reasoning, math, and code.' AI Mode uses a custom Gemini 2.0 series model by default.
Google is experimenting with putting its Deep Search feature in AI Mode, as well, allowing users to have AI Mode craft in-depth reports about a query. 'The model is actually reasoning and thinking of questions to ask and Google searches to perform,' Stein says. 'As it's constructing the response, it will actually check its work and issue further questions in this kind of multi-step reasoning chain.' This feature will also be available to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in Google Labs.

The Smartest Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stocks to Buy With $1,000 Right Now

Key Points AI hardware investments are top picks due to the massive capital expenditures focused on AI. Cloud computing providers are benefiting from increased workloads. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › Artificial intelligence (AI) investing remains at the forefront of the market as companies continue to invest billions of dollars in this emerging technology. We've barely scratched the surface of what an AI-first economy looks like, and to achieve this, we'll need to build out significantly more computing capacity. This is a bullish sign for many companies in this space, and I believe four companies are particularly smart investments to make right now. So, if you have $1,000 (or any other dollar amount) available to deploy, starting with these four is a great idea. AI hardware: Nvidia and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing On the hardware side of things, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has been king of the AI world since the AI race began. Its graphics processing units (GPUs) are widely deployed in AI applications and have established themselves as the go-to option, with a market share of 90%. Nvidia has several bullish factors brewing, including the company reapplying for an export license to resume shipping GPUs to China, while being given assurances by the U.S. government that this license will be approved. This will help reaccelerate Nvidia's growth rate, as it projects second quarter revenue to grow 50% year over year; however, it would have been projected to grown 77% if Nvidia were allowed to sell into China during Q2. That's a massive boost and would allow Nvidia to sustain its jaw-dropping growth rate further into the future. This is a bullish sign for Nvidia's stock, underscoring that Nvidia isn't going anywhere in the AI world. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE: TSM) is a key supplier to Nvidia, as the company can't produce chips for its GPUs in-house. Instead, it purchases them from TSMC, the leading chip foundry. Taiwan Semiconductor has risen to the top by offering cutting-edge technology alongside best-in-class chip yields, which reduces scrap costs, leading to increased profit for TSMC and better prices for its customers. TSMC expects massive growth from AI to continue for some time. At the start of 2025, management projected that AI-related revenue would grow at a 45% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) for five years. Chip orders are often placed years in advance, so when management tells investors that significant growth is coming, they should take notice. Both Nvidia and TSMC are poised for significant growth in the years to come, making them excellent stocks to buy now and hold for the long term. Cloud computing: Amazon and Alphabet Another industry that's benefiting from AI deployment is cloud computing. Many companies can't afford to build an expensive data center that may not be used to its full capacity, so it makes more sense to rent that computing power from a provider like Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) via Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Alphabet's (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) Google Cloud. Grand View Research found that the global cloud computing market size was around $750 billion in 2024, but that's expected to expand to $2.4 trillion by 2030. That growth is powered by both AI and non-AI workloads migrating to the cloud, and companies like Amazon and Alphabet are well positioned to profit from this trend. Each is also a critical part of its parent company's profit picture. In the first quarter, AWS accounted for 63% of Amazon's operating profits, despite comprising only 19% of total revenue. AWS is the profit driver for Amazon, and with its market-beating growth, it's slated to continue driving Amazon's stock higher. Google Cloud is still working toward AWS' impressive 39% operating margin, as it posted an 18% margin in Q1. However, it's growing faster than AWS (28% growth versus 17% growth) and could become a substantial part of Alphabet's profit picture in the coming years. Cloud computing providers, such as Amazon and Alphabet, are also benefiting from the rise of AI. With the overall cloud computing market expected to expand rapidly over the next few years, these stocks make for smart buys now. Should you invest $1,000 in Nvidia right now? Google Pixel 10 Pro Design Secrets Exposed In Latest Leaks

Update, Sunday July 20, 2025: This article has been updated with new details on the Pixel 10 Pro from the FCC. Pixel 9 Pro XL Google is set to launch its new Pixel 10 family at next month's Made By Google event on Aug. 20. Of the four handsets, the Pixel 10 Pro will be seen as the flagship as it balances power and size. While we may not have any official details beyond the name, the new design's focus on continuity is evident, alongside a pursuit of the competitive edge in software. Pixel 10 Pro's FCC Details Update, Sunday July 13, 2025: Before any wireless product goes on sale, national bodies must certify the hardware. In the US, that means manufacturers filing information on their unreleased hardware with the Federal Communications Commission. And as a public body, these certificates are published. Which means that the FCC is one of the most reliable sources for pre-release information. Recent filings include details on the Pixel 10 family, including the key Pixel 10 Pro handset. While the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL handsets will all come with wireless charging and Wi-Fi 6E support, only the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL will offer Thread support or UWB connectivity. Both of these offer improved connectivity between smartphones and smarthome devices, providing improved interoperability, increased range, energy efficiency and security to your home network. While it remains in it infancy, higher-specced smartphones are adding compatibility to be ready in the future. With the Pixel handsets serving in part as technology demonstrators for the wider Android ecosystem, it makes sense to have these models featured in the flagship Pro devices. Pixel 9 Pro XL Pixel 10 Pro's Chinese Sighting This week saw our clearest look yet at the Pixel 10 Pro, as images of the handset appeared on a Chinese auction site. This looks to be a pre-release model, but one that has advanced beyond the basic prototype stage. It's likely a Design Validation Test or Engineering Validation Test model. These are used at various stages of the process, from prototyping to mass production, both represent near-final units but allow scope for changes to be made before all factors are locked in. The design changes we see are likely to be the same as those on the released handsets. The camera bar design introduced in the Pixel 9, moving away from an edge-to-edge raised strip for a still substantial but more island-like lozenge remains. Reflections suggest that the periscope lens has been added as one of the three main lenses at the rear. Around the front of the device, we can make out the bezels, which appear to be slightly smaller than those of previous models, and confirmation that Google is retaining a central punch-out for the selfie camera. Pixel 10 Pro's Vancouver Shoot The design of the Pixel 9 Pro matched that of the Pixel 9. Google is expected to follow a similar path this year with the Pixel 10 as the base unit and the Pixel 10 Pro externally similar but with uprated specifications, the Pixel 10 Pro XL, a larger-screened variant of the 10 Pro, and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, exhibiting a folding design echoing a Pixel 10 when closed. That would mean what is on display here will also be the Pixel 10, especially as the base model may be moving up to a three-lens main camera for 2025. The tweaked camera bar, slimmer bezels and reworked edge matches the Pixel 10 that was spotted in Vancouver during May. The handset and associated storyboards were papped during filming, presumably of the flashy introduction videos and initial YouTube spots seen at a launch event. Pixel 10 Pro's CAD Files Going back further, March saw CAD files of the Pixel 10 appear online. These would be from much earlier in the process, but they illustrated the new camera bar and flatter sides, as well as the potential for a periscope lens in the main camera. The CAD files provided precise measurements of the handset; the width and height remain the same as those of the Pixel 9, but the body is 0.1mm thicker. Pixel 10 Pro Design Cues While these changes from the Pixel 9 family to the Pixel 10 are more evolutionary than the revolutionary jump from the Pixel 8 to the Pixel 9, they are adding up to a cleaner design for the handsets. It's unlikely to stand out against the competition from the likes of Samsung and Apple, but the design will keep pace. Where the Pixel 10 family will have a significant impact will be in software. Google has utilised the Pixel range to promote the broader adoption of Artificial intelligence in mobile devices. The recent I/O Developers conference shows that there will be no let-up in this strategy. The hardware is refined, but it's the software that Google will push hard.
