NASCAR lineup set for All-Star Race after qualifying heats at North Wilkesboro. More to come

Yahoo19-05-2025
The heat races are over and the lineup is set (for now) for the NASCAR All-Star Race.
That's right, heat races. Setting the lineup this way further differentiates the All-Star weekend from your normal NASCAR fare, where single-car qualifying laps determine the starting order.

Brad Keselowski, badly in need of anything positive, got it Saturday with a Heat Race win. Christopher Bell won the other, so they'll start on the front row Sunday night.
The finishing order of Saturday's first heat race set the lineup for the All-Star Race's inside row, while the second heat settled the outside row order.
The 20-car field will swell to 23 following Sunday's preliminary All-Star Open (top two finishers advance) and with final polling in a fan vote that grants one starting spot in the All-Star Race. Those three additional drivers will start from the back of the field for Sunday night's main event.
NASCAR POWER RANKINGS No. 1 is obvious. Who fills out our Top 10 before All-Star Race?

Packers claim WR Kawaan Baker off waivers from Raiders

In need of help at wide receiver with injuries mounting, the Green Bay Packers claimed Kawaan Baker off of waivers from the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday, per NFL reporter Aaron Wilson. The Packers waived cornerback Isaiah Dunn with an injury designation to clear a roster spot for Baker, who will be officially added to the roster once he passes a physical on Wednesday. Matt LaFleur's team needs an experienced player at receiver with Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Savion Williams and now Romeo Doubs -- who left practice on Tuesday -- dealing with injuries of various severities. Baker was a seventh-round pick (No. 255 overall) of the New Orleans Saints in the 2021 NFL draft. He spent time on the Packers practice squad in October and November of the 2022 season, so there is some experience in LaFleur's offense. Baker has spent time on the practice squads of the Saints, Packers and Philadelphia Eagles, and he was with the New England Patriots during the 2024 season. While at South Alabama, Baker caught 126 passes for 1,829 yards and 16 touchdowns while also rushing 92 times for 376 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also returned 29 kickoffs. In 2020, Baker was a second-team All-Sun Belt pick. The Packers are headed to Indiana to face the Colts in a joint practice on Thursday and a preseason game on Saturday. It's possible Baker will be needed to play snaps late in the preseason game.

Astros All-Star closer Josh Hader placed on 15-day disabled list with shoulder strain

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros All-Star closer Josh Hader was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained left shoulder. The move, retroactive to Monday, comes after the left-hander reported shoulder discomfort before Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox. 'It's (a) punch in the gut,' manager Joe Espada said. 'But ... he's seeing doctors right now. We're getting more tests done and hopefully this is not going to be a long-term thing.' Espada added that they don't yet know the severity of the injury and should know more after additional testing. Espada said he would not name a closer to fill in while Hader is out, but would use his relievers based on matchups. 'I feel good about all those guys,' Espada said. Hader, who is in his second season in Houston, is 6-2 with a 2.05 ERA and is tied for third in the majors with 28 saves in 48 appearances this season. To take his spot on the roster, the AL West-leading Astros reinstated right-hander Shawn Dubin from the 15-day injured list. They also designated right-hander Hector Neris for assignment and recalled left-hander Colton Gordon from Triple-A Sugar Land. ___

Phillies Predicted To Cut Ties With Versatile 30-Year-Old Despite Recent Surge

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies are primed for a World Series push this season. They have as much talent as ever, with Kyle Schwarber leading the way on offense and Zack Wheeler leading the pitching staff. With a few injured stars set to return from the injured list in the near future, the Phillies could have a bit of a roster crunch in the coming weeks. FanSided's Zachary Rotman recently predicted the Phillies would cut ties with (or potentially option) veteran utilityman Weston Wilson when Alec Bohm returns from injury. CINCINNATI, OHIO - AUGUST 11: Weston Wilson #37 of the Philadelphia Phillies hits an RBI double during the eighth inning against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park on August 11, 2025 in Cincinnati,... CINCINNATI, OHIO - AUGUST 11: Weston Wilson #37 of the Philadelphia Phillies hits an RBI double during the eighth inning against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park on August 11, 2025 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Edmundo Sosa #33 of the Philadelphia Phillies scores. More"Bohm will be the team's everyday third baseman when he returns, thus creating a platoon at second base with Edmundo Sosa and Bryson Stott, and creating a competition for who will platoon with Max Kepler in left field," Rotman wrote. "Both Otto Kemp and Weston Wilson have spent time in that role this season, and while Wilson has performed well since his recall after the All-Star break, it'd be tough for them to send Kemp back down to Triple-A. "Kemp's overall numbers might not be stellar, but he's slashing .268/.362/.463 with two of his four big league home runs against southpaws this season. His .825 OPS against lefties suggests he'd be an ideal platoon partner with Kepler, and Wilson simply hasn't outperformed him this season." It's more likely that the Phillies will option Wilson rather than designate him for assignment or release him. Still, Otto Kemp makes slightly more sense as a platoon option with Max Kepler, so it's more like the Phillies will keep Kemp rather than Wilson on the roster. It's going to be a tough decision to make, especially since Wilson has played well recently. If he can stay hot for the next few days, there's a chance it's Kemp who's demoted instead.
