Bengaluru Yellow Line metro: Coaches for fourth train set begin arriving in city

The Hindu2 days ago
Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has received another addition to its Yellow Line fleet, with one coach of the fourth train-set reaching the Hebbagodi depot in Bengaluru from Titagarh Rail Systems Limited's factory in Kolkata on August 12 night.
The fourth trainset's one axle for #BengaluruMetro's Yellow Line reached Hebbagodi depot today from Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd, Kolkata, @OfficialBMRCL said.@the_hindu@THBengalurupic.twitter.com/hI3qvDN8kv — Darshan Devaiah B P (@DarshanDevaiahB) August 13, 2025
According to BMRCL officials, the remaining five coaches of the train set are in transit.
'Three coaches are currently at various locations on the city's outskirts on road and may arrive at the depot tonight, while two others are in Andhra Pradesh and are expected to reach the depot by August 14 night,' a senior official told The Hindu.
Once all coaches are assembled at the depot, they will undergo 20-day testing before being introduced into commercial service.
'The train set must undergo various kinds of tests, including system integration with signalling, telecommunications, and power supply networks,' the official added.
The Yellow Line, inaugurated on August 10 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, began commercial operations on August 11 with only three trains in service. The limited fleet has resulted in a waiting period of over 25 minutes during peak hours, leading to overcrowding. The new trainset is expected to help improve frequency, though BMRCL will require more sets to meet optimal service levels.
Driverless trains
The corridor's trains are equipped with Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology, enabling driverless operations, a first for Namma Metro. CBTC is designed to reduce the interval between trains from the current 150 seconds to as low as 90 seconds. However, during the initial period, trained locomotive pilots are being deployed to operate the trains manually.
The 18.82-km Yellow Line, linking R.V. Road to Bommasandra, is an important addition to the Namma Metro network, connecting southern neighbourhoods and the Electronics City to the rest of Bengaluru's metro network.
While the line's civil works were completed nearly a year ago, commissioning was delayed primarily due to setbacks in procuring the driverless trainsets. In 2019, Chinese rolling stock manufacturer CRRC was awarded a ₹1,578-crore contract to supply 216 coaches, with the condition that it establish a manufacturing facility in India. CRRC failed to meet this requirement, prompting BMRCL to issue several notices and consider invoking a ₹372-crore bank guarantee.
To revive the situation, CRRC partnered with Kolkata-based Titagarh Rail Systems Limited, enabling production. Despite this arrangement, delivery schedules have continued to slip, forcing BMRCL to open the Yellow Line with a minimal fleet.
On August 11, a day after the launch of the Yellow Line, Namma Metro achieved its highest-ever single-day ridership. Total boardings across all three operational lines reached 10,48,031 passengers, according to BMRCL data.
The Purple Line (Line 1) accounted for 4,51,816 commuters, the Green Line (Line 2) recorded 2,91,677 boardings, and the newly inaugurated Yellow Line (Line 3) welcomed 52,215 passengers on its first day of commercial service. Interchange stations handled an additional 2,52,323 passengers.
The previous record was set on June 4, when 9,66,732 people travelled by metro when only the Purple and Green lines, covering 76.95 km, were operational, a senior BMRCL official said.

Robots race, play football, crash and collapse at China's 'robot Olympics'

China kicked off the three-day long World Humanoid Robot Games on Friday, looking to showcase its advances in artificial intelligence and robotics with 280 teams from 16 countries. Robots competed in sports such as track and field, and table tennis, as well as tackled robot-specific challenges from sorting medicines and handling materials to cleaning services. Teams came from countries including the United States (US), Germany, and Brazil, with 192 representing universities and 88 from private enterprises such as China's Unitree and Fourier Intelligence. Competing teams used robots from Chinese manufacturers such as Booster Robotics. 'We come here to play and to win. But we are also interested in research,' said Max Polter, a member of HTWK Robots football team from Germany, affiliated with Leipzig University of Applied Sciences. 'You can test a lot of interesting new and exciting approaches in this contest. If we try something and it doesn't work, we lose the game. That's sad but it is better than investing a lot of money into a product which failed.' At the robot games in Beijing, which charged 128 to 580 yuan ($17.83-$80.77) for tickets, humanoids crashed into each other and toppled over repeatedly during football matches, while others collapsed mid-sprint during running events. During one football match, four robots crashed into each other and fell in a tangled heap. In the 1500-metre running event, one robot suddenly collapsed while running at full speed, drawing gasps and cheers from spectators. Despite frequent tumbles requiring human assistance to help robots stand, many managed to right themselves independently, earning applause from audiences. Organisers said the games provide valuable data collection opportunities for developing robots for practical applications such as factory work. Football matches help train robots' coordination abilities, which could prove useful for assembly line operations requiring collaboration between multiple units, commentators said. China is investing billions of dollars in humanoids and robotics as the country grapples with an ageing population and growing competition with the US over advanced technologies. It has staged a series of high-profile robotics events in recent months, including what it called the world's first humanoid robot marathon in Beijing, a robot conference and the opening of retail stores dedicated to humanoid robots. The sector has received government subsidies exceeding $20 billion over the past year, while Beijing plans to establish a one trillion yuan ($137 billion) fund to support AI and robotics startups. Morgan Stanley analysts in a report last week noted a surge in attendance to a recent robot conference from the general public compared to previous years, saying this showed 'how China, not just top government officials, has embraced the concept of embodied intelligence.' 'We believe this widespread interest could be instrumental for China's continued leadership in the humanoid race, providing the necessary talent, resources, and customers to boost industry development and long-term adoption,' they said. Booster Robotics, whose humanoid robots are being used by a Tsinghua University team in the football competition, views soccer as an effective test of perception, decision-making and control technologies that could later be deployed in factories or homes.

Special economic zone to be set up by Chinese textile group inaugurated in Pakistan capital

Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday inaugurated a special economic zone (SEZ) in Islamabad to be set up by a Chinese textile group . State-run the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported that the project would generate exports worth USD 400 million for the country. It will be set up by the Chinese textile group Challenge Fashion Private Limited , which is set to invest USD 100 million over five years in the project. PM Sharif welcomed the establishment of an SEZ, saying that the "initiative would facilitate technology transfer, skill development, and sustainable industrial growth". He also met with the company's delegation - led by its chairman Huwang Weiguo , expressing Pakistan's willingness to "take bilateral ties to new heights", APP quoted him as saying. Live Events The prime minister assured the delegation of his government's complete facilitation for setting up the zone as part of the "industrial component of CPEC ," and thanked the delegation for having faith in the Pakistani market, APP reported. The prime minister expressed Pakistan's desire to set up more such units across the country and hoped to benefit from China's textile sector. He also said that "a China-Pakistan Business-to-Business Conference would soon be held in China, providing an opportunity for collaboration between private businesses of both countries," APP reported. Chairman Huwang said he aims to establish a modern textile industry in Pakistan and thanked the prime minister for his support and hospitality. Pakistan and China have strong economic ties and the USD 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a leading exponent of the relationship. Currently, phase II of the programme is being implemented with a focus on industrialisation, development of special economic zones and projects related to clean energy, agriculture and livelihood projects.

British retailer Tesco to set up distribution center; to create 15,000 additional jobs in Karnataka

Tesco, the UK-based retail giant, is planning to open a new distribution centre in Karnataka, which is expected to generate 15,000 additional jobs, according to Large and Medium Industries Minister M.B. Patil. The Minister also said Rolls-Royce, another UK-based company, was also actively exploring fresh investments in the State. 'The government will expedite all necessary processes to facilitate these companies' plans,' he assured while speaking at a celebratory reception dinner hosted by the British Deputy High Commission in the City to mark the signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the United Kingdom. Mr. Patil said the FTA pact was projected to boost bilateral trade by around £25 billion annually and was expected to help trade double approximately to £90 billion by 2030. The FTA would pave the way for duty-free access for 99% of India's exports to the UK and 90% of UK exports to India. This, Mr. Patil noted, would mean more affordable products, greater market access for businesses, and a surge in commerce benefiting consumers and industries in both countries. He urged the UK-based firms to leverage the State's technology capabilities, robust infrastructure, and industry-friendly ecosystem. Leading British firms such as Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, Tesco, ARM, HSBC, and Aviva already have a significant footprint in Bengaluru and across Karnataka, Mr. Patil said.
