SEC quarterback rankings: Is Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed being disrespected?

Yahoo11-05-2025

We're in the early stages of the college football offseason, as the 2025 campaign will feel much closer after SEC Media Days this summer, but until then, it's all about positional rankings, and Texas A&M's starting quarterback Marcel Reed continues to be underrated, and, if we're being honest, disrespected by most of the national media pundits.
Criticism based on reality is perfectly fine, especially in the SEC where above-average quarterback play is vital for any team to make it to the postseason.

However, Reed's first season as the part-time starter alongside Conner Weigman included several critical wins based on his play, especially on the ground, but his inconsistency as a passer led to his worst performance of the season against rival Texas, completing 16-23 for 146 yards and an interception. Texas A&M's offense didn't score during the game.
Still, for those of us who cover every game, not just the big ones, Reed made progress in the pocket, including his best performance in the pocket during the 4 OT loss to Auburn, throwing for nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns, both career highs. Needing more weapons in the passing game, coach Mike Elko went out and landed three wide receivers from the transfer portal, led by KC Concepcion and Mario Craver.
Along with former Alabama/Texas tight end Amari Niblack, Texas A&M's receiving corps is much faster and should consistently gain separation in their routes, meaning Marcel Reed will need to quickly work through his progressions, make the right read, and throw an accurate ball.
We'll have to wait and see if Reed is destined to improve but until then, Lance Taylor, co-host of The Next Round show released his SEC quarterback rankings, placing Reed 11th overall out of 16 signal callers.

LaNorris Sellers — South Carolina
John Mateer — Oklahoma
Garrett Nussmeier — LSU
Arch Manning — Texas
DJ Lagway — Florida
Jackson Arnold — Auburn
Austin Simmons — Ole Miss
Ty Simpson — Alabama
Diego Pavia — Vanderbilt
Taylen Green — Arkansas
Marcel Reed — Texas A&M
Gunner Stockton — Georgia
Joey Aguilar — Tennessee
Beau Pribula — Missouri
Luke Kromenhoek OR Blake Shapen — Mississippi State
Zach Calzada OR Cutter Boley — Kentucky
1-5 makes sense, especially John Mateer after what he accomplished with Washington State last season. But ranking Jackson Arnold, Austin Simmons, Ty Simpson, and even Taylen Green above Marcel Reed is questionable, especially given the fact that Simmons and Simpson have yet to see little to no playtime.
Positional rankings were meant to be debated, and this one surely fits the mold.

As the Chicago Sky prepare for their home game Saturday against the Indiana Fever, Angel Reese is staying locked in. It's been a slow start for Reese and her teammates, who have won just two of their first six games. Advertisement The opponent is a familiar one. The Sky and Fever faced off to open the regular season on May 17, when Indiana rolled to a 93-58 win. This time, though, the matchup will look a bit different. Indiana star Caitlin Clark is out due to injury. Reese appears ready for the rematch. She reacted to a team social media post showing her attacking the basket and finishing at the rim during practice. Her reaction? Simple and silent: just a repost of the video with no caption. Caitlin Clark's Former Teammate Kate Martin Sends Message After Personal Decision

Caitlin Clark's Former Teammate Kate Martin Sends Message After Personal Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kate Martin has faced several adjustments in her basketball career over the past couple of seasons. From teaming up with Caitlin Clark at the University of Iowa to being drafted 18th overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft, her journey has been full of transitions. Advertisement Now in her second WNBA season, Martin is settling in after a few games with the Golden State Valkyries. Originally starting her pro career in Las Vegas, Martin was selected by Golden State in the league's expansion draft. Earlier this week, Martin appeared on "Bird's Eye View with Sue Bird" and had plenty to discuss. One of the standout topics was her decision to delete social media — a move she spoke about at length. Martin shared how she learned to block out distractions while playing at Iowa. "Caitlin and our entire Iowa squad did such a good job learning how to block out outside noise when we were in the heat of it," Martin said. "The negative stuff can be bad, but the positive stuff can be just as bad sometimes. "If you're going to live for a good comment from some random person, you're going to die." Advertisement Sue Bird echoed the sentiment, replying: "High with the high, lows with the lows. You can't get caught up in either." Martin then explained her approach to managing social media during the season. "That first Final Four run, I deleted my social media for the entire season — it was like six or seven months," Martin said. "I'm doing the same this year. Everything is so new, there's so much going on, and I don't need the positive or the negative. I need to focus on my team." Golden State Valkyries guard Kate Yamashita-Imagn Images Martin appeared in 34 games last season with the Aces and made two starts. She averaged 2.6 points in 11.5 minutes per game. Advertisement In six games this season with the Valkyries entering Saturday, Martin is averaging 6.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 15.2 minutes per game. Her breakout performance came last Sunday against Minnesota, when she dropped 14 points in 19 minutes of action. After hosting the Aces on Saturday, Golden State hits the road to face the Los Angeles Sparks on Monday. The Valkyries have split two meetings so far this season with L.A.
