SEC quarterback rankings: Is Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed being disrespected?

We're in the early stages of the college football offseason, as the 2025 campaign will feel much closer after SEC Media Days this summer, but until then, it's all about positional rankings, and Texas A&M's starting quarterback Marcel Reed continues to be underrated, and, if we're being honest, disrespected by most of the national media pundits. Criticism based on reality is perfectly fine, especially in the SEC where above-average quarterback play is vital for any team to make it to the postseason. Advertisement However, Reed's first season as the part-time starter alongside Conner Weigman included several critical wins based on his play, especially on the ground, but his inconsistency as a passer led to his worst performance of the season against rival Texas, completing 16-23 for 146 yards and an interception. Texas A&M's offense didn't score during the game. Still, for those of us who cover every game, not just the big ones, Reed made progress in the pocket, including his best performance in the pocket during the 4 OT loss to Auburn, throwing for nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns, both career highs. Needing more weapons in the passing game, coach Mike Elko went out and landed three wide receivers from the transfer portal, led by KC Concepcion and Mario Craver. Along with former Alabama/Texas tight end Amari Niblack, Texas A&M's receiving corps is much faster and should consistently gain separation in their routes, meaning Marcel Reed will need to quickly work through his progressions, make the right read, and throw an accurate ball. We'll have to wait and see if Reed is destined to improve but until then, Lance Taylor, co-host of The Next Round show released his SEC quarterback rankings, placing Reed 11th overall out of 16 signal callers. Advertisement LaNorris Sellers — South Carolina John Mateer — Oklahoma Garrett Nussmeier — LSU Arch Manning — Texas DJ Lagway — Florida Jackson Arnold — Auburn Austin Simmons — Ole Miss Ty Simpson — Alabama Diego Pavia — Vanderbilt Taylen Green — Arkansas Marcel Reed — Texas A&M Gunner Stockton — Georgia Joey Aguilar — Tennessee Beau Pribula — Missouri Luke Kromenhoek OR Blake Shapen — Mississippi State Zach Calzada OR Cutter Boley — Kentucky 1-5 makes sense, especially John Mateer after what he accomplished with Washington State last season. But ranking Jackson Arnold, Austin Simmons, Ty Simpson, and even Taylen Green above Marcel Reed is questionable, especially given the fact that Simmons and Simpson have yet to see little to no playtime. Positional rankings were meant to be debated, and this one surely fits the mold. Watch Texas A&M's starting QB show off his arm strengh this offseason

Texas A&M's 2025 football season will be determined by how the Aggie offense performs behind starting quarterback Marcel Reed, who enters his first full season as the starter after last season's QB carousel with Conner Weigman. After working hard this offseason leading to the 2025 Maroon & White spring game, Reed still has a way to go as a passer, but showed improvement in the pocket, delivering several impressive throws during the game, while his enhanced wide receiver room, led by transfer KC Concepcion, showed off their separation skills, as the room is much faster compared to last season. Advertisement For those who feel Reed does not possess the arm strength to become a reliable passer who can be the reason the Aggies win games when a balanced offense can't be achieved, Reed's Father, Rod Reed, posted a video of his son working out this month, showing off said arm strength and accuracy on the process. When judging a quarterback at the Power 5 level, completing the deep pass, especially connecting on post routes in the middle of the field, is vital to success, but in OC Collin Klein's system, short and intermediate passes to slowly and methodically move the ball down the field is the key to a balanced offense, as the Aggies' run game is expected to keep Marcel Reed to having to win multiple games with his arm. While Reed's ability to make plays with his legs will continue to be a big part of the Aggie offense, having more weapons in the passing game, which also includes former Alabama/Texas tight end Amari Niblack will surely help get things rolling early. Last season, Marcel Reed threw for 1,864 yards, 15 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Texas A&M junior named one of the '10 receivers to know' in the 2026 NFL draft

Texas A&M junior named one of the '10 receivers to know' in the 2026 NFL draft Texas A&M's 2025 wide receiver rotation is completely revamped and for the better, as the offseason additions of KC Concepcion (NC State), Mario Craver (Mississippi State), and Jonah Wilson (Houston) combined with the return of Terry Bussey, Izaiah Williams, and Ashton Bethel-Roman makes OC Collin Klein's job a whole lot easier next season. The depth chart likely needs one more red zone threat after Noah Thomas, the team's tallest wide receiver transferred to Georgia this offseason, but if that doesn't come to fruition, Klein will likely focus on involving the tight ends, especially former Alabama/Texas tight end Amari Niblack, who should be a threat in the seam against smaller defenders. However, the focus will be on KC Concepcion, who has been a playmaker and No. 1 option during his entire career at NC State, and despite his drop-off in production last season, he was still considered one of the top transfer portal players who could potentially change a program's offense and is on track to do just that with the Maroon & White. After the 2025 season, Concepcion is considered a top 2026 NFL draft selection, possessing the speed, route running, and downfield acceleration to burn corners once he makes his move. According to Pro Football Focus analyst Max Chadwick, Concepcion is the 8th-ranked receiver on his "10 receivers to know" before the 2026 draft. Here is the complete list: Jordyn Tyson — Arizona State Eric Singleton Jr. — Auburn (previously Georgia Tech) Antonio Williams — Clemson Eugene Wilson III — Florida Elijah Sarratt — Indiana Malachi Fields — Notre Dame Carnell Tate — Ohio State Kevin (KC) Concepcion — Texas A&M (previously NC State) Makai Lemon — USC Denzel Boston — Washington Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions. Texas A&M freshman WR shines during Maroon & White spring game.

Texas A&M freshman WR shines during Maroon & White spring game. And just like that, the annual Texas A&M Maroon & White spring football game is over, and there were a few standout underclassmen who could work their way onto the field next season. It can be tough to evaluate players for several reasons. First, there is no true first-string roster on the field. Second, the ruleset limits the ability of the quarterbacks to extend certain plays due to the tight abundance of caution on quarterback safety. Lastly, there is an extremely vanilla playbook that does allow for a lot of creativity or no huddle. With that being said, we still have some players who shine on the offensive side of the ball. One player that caught everyone's eye was redshirt freshman Izaiah Williams. The wide receiver out of Florida saw limited playing time on the field last season, only logging one catch for 15 yards, but out of high school, he was known for his speed and athleticism. Those traits were on full display during the Spring game, with him hauling in several contested catches and being the most dynamic playmaker on the White squad. With the wide receiver room looking to fill in depth pieces behind KC Concepcion and Mario Craver, Williams had a case to be on the field for the 2025 season. College football is constantly changing, but the future looks bright for the Texas A&M receiver room for years to come. Aggie fans and media react to Texas A&M's Maroon & White spring game showing

Aggie fans and media react to Texas A&M's Maroon & White spring game showing Texas A&M's spring football season concluded after Saturday's Maroon & White spring game, ending with the White team winning 19-7 over the Maroon team in a game dominated by defense. At the same time, redshirt sophomore starting quarterback Marcel Reed had his moments, but we can only judge the dual-threat signal caller so much from a condensed live scrimmage. Still, there were plenty of positives from Saturday's matchup, led by freshman Edge Marco Jones, who finished the game with four sacks, which was more than future 2025 draft picks Shemar Stewart, Shemar Turner, and Nic Scourton recorded during last year's spring game. While some may find that stat meaningless, Jones is quite the athlete and could become a key rotational member of coach Mike Elko and DC Jay Bateman's pass rush this coming season. Other 2025 freshmen who stood out include DL Landon Rink, linebacker Noah Mikhail, cornerback Adonyss Currie, and wide receiver TK Norman, who all made plays on Saturday. On offense, backup quarterbacks Jacob Zeno and Miles O'Neill are still battling for the No. 2 spot, and after an efficient day in the pocket, O'Neill may have a slight edge. While the run game was non-existent, all three quarterbacks, especially Marcel Reed, took full advantage of Texas A&M's revamped wide receiver room, led by former NC State WR KC Concepcion. Concepcion is the clear No. 1 receiving option, while Mario Craver (Mississippi State) made several notable catches, including 17 and 29-yard receptions from two of Reed's best throws on the day. Other names include Izaiah Williams and Ashton Bethel-Roman, who caught Reed's only touchdown pass. Still, the Texas A&M transfer portal additions on the defensive line, led by T.J. Searcy (Florida), Dayon Hayes (Colorado), and Tyler Onyedim (Iowa State) should put most Aggie fans at ease knowing that Cashius Howell and Rylan Kennedy now have plenty of help heading into the 2025 season. After the first Aggie win of the season (joke), here are the best social media reactions from both Aggie media and the fan base. Freshman Edge Marco Jones is a star in the making Texas A&M's new D-line additions looked the part Much more speed at wide receiver heading into next season Yes, yes, he is Marco Jones has been praised throughout the spring practice period When a legend meets Texas A&M's new head basketball coach Marcel Reed had his moments KC Concepcion is THE name to watch next fall Cashius Howell is ready to take the next step as the Aggies' top pass rusher Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions.
