Previewing the 2025 season for Texas A&M WR Ashton Bethel-Roman with his player profile

USA Today19 hours ago
As we gear up for the 2025 football season, Aggies Wire is breaking down every player on the Texas A&M roster. Throughout the preseason, each profile will highlight a player's background, their recruiting rankings upon graduating from high school, and their projected role under head coach Mike Elko.
Besides KC Concepcion, the wide receiver room features a wealth of youthful talent. Terry Bussey and Mario Craver combined for 584 total yards last season, and numerous opportunities will arise for others to prove themselves. One standout who flashed potential is second-year Houston native Ashton Bethel-Roman.
Much like his freshman counterpart Izaiah Williams, Bethel-Roman saw limited action, appearing in only four games. However, he made the most of his time, recording four catches for 44 yards and a touchdown.
Preseason Player Profile
Recruiting Rankings (Class of 2024)
The former four-star prospect Bethel-Roman brings exceptional speed to the position. On the track, he was part of the 4x100m and 4x200m relay teams that both earned top-three finishes in the Texas Class 6A Championship. His strong junior season included an average of 24.1 yards per catch and a third-round playoff appearance. Based on speed alone, sources have stated that Bethel-Romas has run as fast as a 4.3 40-yard dash.
Depth Chart Outlook
KC Concepcion, Terry Bussey, and Mario Craver are penciled in as starters, while Bethel-Roman and redshirt freshman Izaiah Williams will battle for the fourth receiver spot.

Spartans' Aidan Chiles snubbed in On3's top Big Ten quarterbacks rankings

On3's Andy Staples has released his rankings of the top quarterbacks in the Big Ten, and unfortunately, Michigan State's Aidan Chiles did not make the cut. Staples put out his top 10 quarterbacks in the Big Ten list earlier this week, with Chiles failing to be included. You can see the top 10 list of quarterbacks from Staples in the social media X post below: Staples' list and opinion on Chiles aligns with Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports, who also had him as a back half of the Big Ten quarterback in his recent preseason rankings. Myerberg has Chiles listed as the No. 12 quarterback in his Big Ten rankings released earlier this month. Chiles is entering his second year as the Spartans' starter at quarterback, looking for more consistency from game-to-game. He finished last season with 2,415 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions with a completion percentage just under 60%. The bright spot, though, for Chiles was his growth during the second half the season where he only threw three of his 11 interceptions in the final six games of the year. For Michigan State to get back to a bowl game or above this season, Chiles will need to play like an upper half quarterback in the Big Ten. So, hopefully, if Staples were to do a postseason version of these same rankings, we will be seeing Chiles' name on that list unlike these preseason rankings. Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 53: a history of the number and who wore it best

The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 53 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 53 and the players who wore it best. Current Steelers No. 53 wearer: OLB Eku Leota Heading into the 2025 season, OLB Eku Leota is the current Steelers wearer of No. 53. The outside linebacker signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2023 — where he would remain until being released on September 21, 2024. Less than two weeks later, the Steelers signed Leota to their practice squad — ultimately appearing in just one game in 2024 for Pittsburgh. He would sign a Future/Reserve contract this past January — but faces stiff competition to make the 53-man roster due to a loaded outside linebacker room. Last five Steelers to wear No. 53: Best No. 53 in Steelers history: C Maurkice Pouncey When it comes to No. 53, no Steeler wore it better than C Maurkice Pouncey. Drafted by Pittsburgh with the 18th overall pick in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft, Pouncey served as a long-time leader of the Steelers' offensive line for over a decade, tasked with protecting the legendary Ben Roethlisberger. He played in 134 career games and started every one of those contests for the Steelers. Pouncey's stellar play resulted in two First-Team All-Pro selections and three Second-Team All-Pro selections — while also being named to nine Pro Bowls. For his achievements, he was named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team — and there is no honor more befitting than to be recognized as the greatest Steeler to ever wear No. 53. 'He's always available' Paul Finebaum praises Texas A&M HC Mike Elko's intellect

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko will take the podium during this week's SEC media days on Thursday afternoon. Before the second-year coach and his three player representatives speak to the many members in attendance, Elko has been praised by several prominent SEC coaches and media members, including SEC Network host Paul Finebaum. National praise for Elko after his first season on the job has been scarce, mainly due to the Aggies finishing 8-5 after starting 7-1, but for those who enjoy context, the loss of star running back Le'Veon Moss placed the offense in a bad spot, and starting quarterback Marcel Reed, who enters the season with more experience under his belt, had his share of freshman moments while facing a host of tough secondaries down the stretch. Still, Elko had a better first record than most first-year head coaches in the SEC, and for those who only judge Elko on his coaching ability, Finebaum, who has interviewed Elko on multiple occasions, described the New Jersey native on a more personal level. Just like Vanderbilt HC Clark Lea, Finebaum described Elko as one of the smarter coaches in the country. "Mike Elko is the smartest coach I've dealt with in a long time" Finebaum stated. "He's a thoughtful guy, He's always available. None of these things have to do with his coaching ability, but they matter." It's fair to note that Mike Elko is an Ivy League graduate (University of Pennsylvania) while establishing himself as one of the best recruiters in the country this summer, developing strong and lasting relationships with all 25 of the program's 2026 commits. Elko's background as an elite defensive coordinator certainly played a large part in his hiring nearly two years ago, but what he brings as a leader is unmatched, and is a primary reason over 70% of the 2024 roster returned this offseason. Texas A&M will be the final team to speak on Thursday, July 17, at 2:54 p.m. CT.
