Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed's deep ball has continued to improve this preseason
Texas A&M's first scrimmage of the preseason took place on Saturday under second-year coach Mike Elko. While the media was not present, several key takeaways from those who were in attendance included starting quarterback Marcel Reed's deep ball, which has steadily improved, as all the work the redshirt sophomore has put in this summer should begin to pay off. Thanks to the Aggie media team, who have released two short clips of the scrimmage, Monday's video included Reed hitting sophomore wide receiver Ashton Bethel-Roman in stride on a go route, which could end up being one of the surprise connections that finally opens up Texas A&M's passing game under OC Collin Klein. Marcel Reed's improvement as a passer is undoubtedly one of the main storylines this summer. Still, Bethel-Roman's rise this preseason has him on track to win the No. 3 wide receiver job behind transfers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver. Again, as I wrote over the weekend, Bethel-Roman was, and continues to be, the most underrated commitment in the 2024 class, flipping from Arkansas, and continuing the long line of Missouri, Texas natives to play college football at Texas A&M. Over the last two weeks, the sophomore has been the talk of the offense, possessing a fluid route running style and has looked like the fastest player on offense. For Reed to become a better deep ball passer, the ability to separate against safeties in the third level of the field is key, something Bethel-Roman thrived with during his prolific high school career. TexAgs co-owner Billy Liucci, the most trusted Texas A&M insider, notes that that is just one example of Reed's deep passing game, hitting multiple receivers during the scrimmage, and taking full advantage of the added speed, quickness, and separation against the Aggies' talented secondary. Previewing the 2025 season for Texas A&M WR Ashton Bethel-Roman with his player profile
As we gear up for the 2025 football season, Aggies Wire is breaking down every player on the Texas A&M roster. Throughout the preseason, each profile will highlight a player's background, their recruiting rankings upon graduating from high school, and their projected role under head coach Mike Elko. Besides KC Concepcion, the wide receiver room features a wealth of youthful talent. Terry Bussey and Mario Craver combined for 584 total yards last season, and numerous opportunities will arise for others to prove themselves. One standout who flashed potential is second-year Houston native Ashton Bethel-Roman. Much like his freshman counterpart Izaiah Williams, Bethel-Roman saw limited action, appearing in only four games. However, he made the most of his time, recording four catches for 44 yards and a touchdown. Preseason Player Profile Recruiting Rankings (Class of 2024) The former four-star prospect Bethel-Roman brings exceptional speed to the position. On the track, he was part of the 4x100m and 4x200m relay teams that both earned top-three finishes in the Texas Class 6A Championship. His strong junior season included an average of 24.1 yards per catch and a third-round playoff appearance. Based on speed alone, sources have stated that Bethel-Romas has run as fast as a 4.3 40-yard dash. Depth Chart Outlook KC Concepcion, Terry Bussey, and Mario Craver are penciled in as starters, while Bethel-Roman and redshirt freshman Izaiah Williams will battle for the fourth receiver spot. Freshman on fire: Texas A&M wideout impressing with rapid growth in offseason
Freshman on fire: Texas A&M wideout impressing with rapid growth in offseason According to Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko, one freshman wideout in particular is impressing the coaching staff with his dedication to honing his craft and rapid growth during the offseason. Ashton Bethel-Roman is turning heads with his electric speed and determination to improve all aspects of his game. Via The Stateman's Tony Catalina, the Aggies' second-year head coach Mike Elko commented on the freshman's performance in the weight room and on the gridiron heading into the 2025 season. The unanimous four-star prospect from Missouri City, Texas, ranked as the No. 207 player in the country in ESPN's top 300 players. As a senior at Ridge Point High School in 2023, he caught 97 passes for 1,997 yards and 17 touchdowns, while also averaging 21.7 yards per punt return. His wheels and break-open speed is also a result of a deep-rooted passion for track and field, in which Bethel-Roman recorded a personal best of 21.51 in the 200m and 23-3 long jump mark during his senior year. He committed and signed the letter of intent to attend Texas A&M on February 7, 2024. Elko and company allowed the speedy track star to get his cleats dirty in four games last season, including a 38-3 victory over New Mexico State in which Bethel-Roman hauled in 35 receiving yards and his first-career touchdown. The former Ridge Point all-district first-team wideout was allowed to keep his redshirt last season since he only appeared in four contests, according to NCAA rules. Heading into the 2025 campaign, Bethel-Roman will give sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed another target in a depth-filled wide receiving corps. As he continues to develop in Elko's system, the Aggie wideout has the opportunity to hone his craft and improve as the season goes along. If Texas A&M wants to have success this year and in the next few years, especially in the day and age of the ever-changing transfer portal and NIL era of college football, keeping players like Bethel-Roman around the program will be integral moving forward. Bethel-Roman's pursuit of muscle mass and weight gain, combined with his lightning-quick speed, could propel him up the Texas A&M depth chart sooner rather than later.
