'He's always available' Paul Finebaum praises Texas A&M HC Mike Elko's intellect
National praise for Elko after his first season on the job has been scarce, mainly due to the Aggies finishing 8-5 after starting 7-1, but for those who enjoy context, the loss of star running back Le'Veon Moss placed the offense in a bad spot, and starting quarterback Marcel Reed, who enters the season with more experience under his belt, had his share of freshman moments while facing a host of tough secondaries down the stretch.
Still, Elko had a better first record than most first-year head coaches in the SEC, and for those who only judge Elko on his coaching ability, Finebaum, who has interviewed Elko on multiple occasions, described the New Jersey native on a more personal level. Just like Vanderbilt HC Clark Lea, Finebaum described Elko as one of the smarter coaches in the country.
"Mike Elko is the smartest coach I've dealt with in a long time" Finebaum stated. "He's a thoughtful guy, He's always available. None of these things have to do with his coaching ability, but they matter."
It's fair to note that Mike Elko is an Ivy League graduate (University of Pennsylvania) while establishing himself as one of the best recruiters in the country this summer, developing strong and lasting relationships with all 25 of the program's 2026 commits.
Elko's background as an elite defensive coordinator certainly played a large part in his hiring nearly two years ago, but what he brings as a leader is unmatched, and is a primary reason over 70% of the 2024 roster returned this offseason.

Pro Football Focus College released its preseason First Team All-Big Ten Offense on Monday afternoon, one month before Nebraska begins the 2025 season. Right guard Rocco Spindler represents the Huskers on the list. The Notre Dame transfer joins Nebraska after spending four seasons with the Fighting Irish. He played in 40 games for Notre Dame at right guard, starting in 23 of them. Spindler got his first chance of action during his freshman season in 2021, playing in two games before redshirting. He then played in 12 games as a sophomore in 2022, before earning the starting role in 2023. The 6-foot-5, 320-pound lineman got 10 starts in 2023, helping the Fighting Irish rank second in school history in scoring and yards per play. His performance on the Notre Dame helped him become a 2023 Joe Moore Award Semifinalist. Spindler then started the final 13 games of the 2024 season, guiding Notre Dame to the College Football Playoff championship game. Before joining the Fighting Irish, Spindler emerged from Clarkson High School in Michigan with a four-star rating and ESPN tabbing him as the nation's No. 1 offensive guard. Alabama wide receiver named to preseason watch list for top college football award
Per an announcement Monday afternoon, Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Ryan Williams has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2025 Maxwell Award. The Maxwell Award is presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football, and is an honor that the Crimson Tide have received five times before. Those winners were A.J. McCarron (2013), Derrick Henry (2015), Tua Tagovailoa (2018), DeVonta Smith (2020), and Bryce Young (2021). A sophomore, Williams enters the 2025 season coming off a stellar freshman campaign in which he received honors such as First Team All-SEC and Freshman All-America. Across 13 games, Williams hauled in 48 receptions for 865 yards and eight touchdowns, while also rushing for 48 yards and two more scores. Williams also played a role on special teams, returning 12 punts for 120 yards, as well as two kicks for 14 yards. Seven LSU football players earn preseason All-SEC honors at media days
Seven LSU football players made the AP's preseason All-SEC team, announced Friday. Whit Weeks leads the pack as a first-teamer. Garrett Nussmeier, Caden Durham, Aaron Anderson, Harold Perkins, Barion Brown and Zavion Thomas all earned second-team honors. Weeks led the team with 125 tackles, adding in 10 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He's poised for another strong season following a lower-body injury in the Kinder's Texas Bowl. Heading into his second season starting at quarterback, Nussmeier is gunning for the program's all-time passing mark, which currently stands at 9,115. Last year, he threw for 4,052 yards with 29 touchdowns. Durham is coming off an All-SEC freshman season. He picked up 1,013 total yards and averaged 9.3 yards per carry. Despite dealing with a lingering toe injury, he developed into a versatile weapon. As a sophomore, he'll be the Tigers' feature back to balance out an improved passing game. Anderson made the cut as a wide receiver. He returns as a veteran presence in Baton Rouge amongst a host of transfers and freshmen. The redshirt junior made 61 catches for 884 yards in 2024. Following an injury-plagued 2024, Perkins returns to lead a retooled defense alongside Weeks. The linebacker made 17 tackles through four games last year before sitting out. He'll bounce between linebacker and the STAR position in defensive coordinator Blake Baker's scheme in 2025. Brown and Thomas appeared on the team as return specialists. They'll look to take up important roles on the offense as receivers as well, but both are apart of LSU's renewed focus on special teams success.
