Paul Finebaum shares take on what LSU's Brian Kelly said at SEC media days
LSU football head coach Brian Kelly met with the media on Monday at SEC media days. This event serves as an annual reminder that the college football season is getting closer and closer. Kelly's statement at the main stage addressed a variety of topics, from LSU's current team to the state of college sports. Kelly has been around a long time and is a seasoned veteran when it comes to media days. Advertisement Just as Kelly left the stage, the SEC Network cut to Paul Finebaum. What stood out most to the SEC Network commentator was Kelly's confidence. "Usually, when a coach goes on for exactly 12 minutes without answering questions, it makes it appear that he doesn't want to answer them. But he did, and he does. And I don't want to say this is a new Brian Kelly because he's 60 years old and he's had an extraordinary career, but this is Brian Kelly embracing the noise," Finebaum said from the SEC Network set. "He's like, I don't care. And some would say, well, don't you think he's putting more pressure on himself? You can't put any more pressure on yourself when you're coaching at a school where in the aftermath of Nick Saban, Les Miles, and Ed O all won national championships, and people are saying, this is your fourth year, when are you going to win one?" Finebaum said its a unique moment for Kelly at LSU, but he said he thinks Kelly believes this is the year LSU can back it up. Darrell Royal's Longhorns featured in Wishbone documentary on SEC Network
The Wishbone offense revolutionized college football 🤯SEC Storied: Wishbone tonight at 7 PM ET 🎥 In 1990s it was the 'Run and Shoot.' In the early 2000s it was the 'Read Option.' But in the late 1960s and '70s, no offense dominated college football like the 'Wishbone.' Now that two of the primary innovators of the offense are in the conference, the SEC Network is airing a documentary about its history. A form of the Wishbone had been banging around Texas high schools in the late 1950s and 60s as a modified 'T' formation when it was seen by future Texas Longhorns assistant Emory Bellard. About the time Texas head coach Darrell Royal hired Bellard, the triple option was showing signs of success in college football. Royal asked Bellard to come up with a new formation and he combined elements of the modified 'T' with a 'Slot-I' formation and after some initial growing pains, the Wishbone took off. Texas went onto win two national titles running the offense. Oklahoma under Barry Switzer and Alabama under Bear Bryant also adopted a form of the Wishbone and the next seven out of ten national champs ran the offense. Switzer is credited with perfecting the formation and ran it successfully all the way into the '90s. But by then the 'Run and Shoot' was taking over. The SEC Network's documentary "SEC Storied: Wishbone" will air Thursday night, July 17 at 6 p.m. CT and will be available on ESPN+ and re-airings on SEC Network.

Former SEC QB thinks Georgia's Gunner Stockton is being underestimated
Even though Georgia Bulldogs projected started quarterback Gunner Stockton has drawn some doubters this offseason, but there was one notable person at the SEC media days that believes he is being over scrutinized. SEC Network analyst and former Vanderbilt Commodores quarterback Jordan Rodgers had some words that can have Georgia fans hopeful. "I just think people are really underestimating how talented Gunner Stockton actually is," Rodgers said. "Probably because he sat behind Carson Beck who is one of the most gifted throwers in the country. Like he is a dual-threat guy, he is a legitimate threat to run the football. And I think in that Sugar Bowl, he played good enough to win that game. His offensive line couldn't block anybody, his receivers let him down over and over again. He continued, under pressure, to work the ball in tight windows. I think a lot of people are overlooking just how good Gunner Stockton is." In his first collegiate start, after replacing the injured Carson Beck after the SEC Championship, Stockton delivered a strong performance against Notre Dame, throwing for 234 yards and a touchdown while completing 62.5% of his passes. Now with a full season ahead, Stockton has a chance to make sure that his doubters and prove people like Jordan Rodgers right. Stockton will have a couple of weeks to adjust to starting where he'll play against a pair of non-Power Four opponents to start the season before playing at Tennessee in Week 3. 'He's always available' Paul Finebaum praises Texas A&M HC Mike Elko's intellect
Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko will take the podium during this week's SEC media days on Thursday afternoon. Before the second-year coach and his three player representatives speak to the many members in attendance, Elko has been praised by several prominent SEC coaches and media members, including SEC Network host Paul Finebaum. National praise for Elko after his first season on the job has been scarce, mainly due to the Aggies finishing 8-5 after starting 7-1, but for those who enjoy context, the loss of star running back Le'Veon Moss placed the offense in a bad spot, and starting quarterback Marcel Reed, who enters the season with more experience under his belt, had his share of freshman moments while facing a host of tough secondaries down the stretch. Still, Elko had a better first record than most first-year head coaches in the SEC, and for those who only judge Elko on his coaching ability, Finebaum, who has interviewed Elko on multiple occasions, described the New Jersey native on a more personal level. Just like Vanderbilt HC Clark Lea, Finebaum described Elko as one of the smarter coaches in the country. "Mike Elko is the smartest coach I've dealt with in a long time" Finebaum stated. "He's a thoughtful guy, He's always available. None of these things have to do with his coaching ability, but they matter." It's fair to note that Mike Elko is an Ivy League graduate (University of Pennsylvania) while establishing himself as one of the best recruiters in the country this summer, developing strong and lasting relationships with all 25 of the program's 2026 commits. Elko's background as an elite defensive coordinator certainly played a large part in his hiring nearly two years ago, but what he brings as a leader is unmatched, and is a primary reason over 70% of the 2024 roster returned this offseason. Texas A&M will be the final team to speak on Thursday, July 17, at 2:54 p.m. CT.
