Big Tech's colossal capex spending could be offsetting the impact of tariffs

President Donald Trump's tariffs continue to cast uncertainty over financial markets. Meanwhile, many leading tech companies have reported strong earnings and spending growth. Some experts speculate that this could help offset the impact of the tariffs. President Donald Trump's newest round of tariffs has taken effect as trade tensions continue to escalate. Each round has complicated the economic landscape and raised uncertainty, especially as some companies struggle under the weight of these policies. However, many leading tech companies have made it clear that they don't intend to scale back their spending. Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms all increased their capex guidance for 2025. As one expert sees it, this could be exactly what helps offset the impact of Trump's tariffs. "These mega-cap tech companies haven't just powered the S&P 500's rebound and pushed the NASDAQ to new highs since the post-Liberation Day lows," wrote Larry Adam, CIO of Raymond James, in a note on Wednesday. "They've also helped offset the drag from tariffs and tight Fed policy through massive capital spending." Adam isn't the only one who sees this as a distinct possibility. Eugenia Mykuliak, founder and executive director of B2Prime, highlighted the importance of Big Tech's spending spree for the broader economy. "Although it seems to be a different story from tariffs, these companies help the economy by creating jobs and keeping stock markets strong," she said. She credited the tech sector's growth with helping soften the blows dealt to the market by Trump's ongoing tariffs and the Federal Reserve's ongoing refusal to cut interest rates. Kroll managing director Carla Nunes also predicts that the high AI and data center spending from mega-cap tech leaders will likely mitigate the effects of tariffs. However, she also noted that she doesn't believe it will offset the impact of other economic trends. "The impacts of tariffs on real economic activity will take some time to be fully reflected in economic data, so the longer-term impact needs to be interpreted with caution," Nunes stated.

Amazon is selling the MacBook Pro M4 for lowest price yet — get one now!

If you're looking for one of the best MacBooks, the latest 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro is the laptop to consider. While it is the most affordable MacBook Pro available, the usual $1,599 cost isn't exactly cheap. Thankfully, it's now been reduced to a price that makes it as affordable as a MacBook Air. Right now, the MacBook Pro 14-inch M4 is on sale for $1,299 at Amazon. That $300 price reduction makes it cost just $100 more than the 15-inch MacBook Air M4, which is already a great value laptop. If you're looking for a dependable MacBook for everyday work, video editing and even gaming, the 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 at this price is hard to top. (For more deals, check out this week's best MacBook deals). The MacBook Pro M4 offers amazing battery life and faster performance, along with clever Apple Intelligence features, but the nano-texture display steals the show. We also like the sharper 12MP webcam and additional Thunderbolt port, but the SSD is slower than we expected. The latest 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 features the same design as MacBooks released since late 2021. Measuring 12.3 x 8.7 x 6.1 inches and weighing 3.4 pounds, this laptop is a nice middle ground between a MacBook Air 13-inch M4 and a MacBook Pro 16-inch M4 Pro. It's not only easy to travel with, but it also looks great thanks to its elegant design. This model improves on its predecessor, the MacBook Pro 14-inch M3. Upgrades include three Thunderbolt ports instead of two, an optional nano-texture display that drastically reduces glare, and a sharper 12MP camera. It can even power two external displays simultaneously, which is another big upgrade over the M3 model. Thanks to the M4 chip inside, this MacBook Pro delivers incredible performance and astonishing battery life. On Geekbench, which measures overall performance, the MacBook Pro M4 turned in considerably faster scores on the single-core test than the M3 model and blew away some of the best Windows laptops. It also lasted for 18 hours and 31 minutes in our battery life test, which makes it one of the longest-lasting laptops we've ever reviewed. I review laptops for a living, so I can tell you that the 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 is a laptop you should seriously consider buying if you're looking to upgrade from an older MacBook or if you're a Windows user who wants to see what macOS is all about. I don't know how this deal will last, so I urge you to get the MacBook Pro M4 before it returns to its original price.
