'Mad decisions' - Schumacher keen to address Wednesday issues before Barnsley
While all eyes turn to Saturday's game at Barnsley with three points at stake, the Bolton boss will review some of the poor decisions which contributed to a disappointing night, and an opportunity missed to host Premier League Leeds United in the next round.
Even after going down to 10 men, Wanderers pulled themselves on three separate occasions – and though Schumacher applauded the spirit shown to do so, he did question some of the game management to keep the scorelines level.
'We were stretched at times, we made some mad decisions,' he told The Bolton News. 'We didn't let the game settle down once we equalised, twice, and then conceded pretty quickly.
'When it is so early into the season and people are still getting up to speed, that decision-making can sometimes be a little bit off, and it was, but it's not the end of the world.
'It is something that we can learn from and deal with pretty simply, and as everyone's seen so far this season, we've been really well organised, so it's no big drama if there's a couple of mistakes here and there.
'Every game is important and we didn't want to be out of the cup – we won't brush it under the carpet just because it isn't a league game.
'We will go back, talk about it, and see what we could have done better.'
Much was made of the youthfulness of the Wednesday line-up – and though keeper Pierce Charles and captain Ike Ugbo had a reasonable amount of first team experience, there were several players used by Henrik Pedersen on the night who had never started a game for the Owls.
Schumacher had warned his players about the potential for a difficult night but felt his players were suitably prepared, and not 'caught cold'.
'Not really,' he said. 'We showed the lads that these are young players who've got loads of energy, and in the pre-season games that we managed to watch, some of their rotation and their movement is really good.
'A lot of the younger players have played in the friendlies because the seniors have been not available, so we knew it was going to be difficult to figure out, and if you're not exactly spot on when you press, especially with their goalkeeper, they can pick you off.
'I just felt the game was a bit scrappy for 10 minutes, which can happen, but they capitalised on a moment when we made a mistake and the lad whacked it in from 30-odd yards into the top corner, so then we are on the back foot, but we responded well.'
Sam Inwood was handed a straight red card by referee Oliver Langford for a professional foul on Charlie McNeil, and Schumacher admitted the young defender was upset after the game.
'He is gutted,' said the Whites boss. 'But it's one of them, there's not too much he could have done about it, I don't think.
'Maybe just drop a little bit quicker, so he doesn't allow the pass to go in behind him, but that is something he'll learn from.
'I'll watch it back, probably and go through it with him. He is gutted to have been out and left us short, but again, it's part of the game.'

Liverpool set to put ULTIMATUM on senior player's future
The competition for places in Liverpool's squad is just as feisty as you expect it to be. Every summer, before the recruitment plan is decided for the transfer window, the Liverpool academy talents get their chance to impress Arne Slot for a chance of playing in the first team. The last pre-season campaign led to Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni being called-up as full-time members of the senior set-up and we'll see how perform then playing at a more intense level. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range Youngsters are normally gifted this chance because the squad has lost a player in that position and the cost of bringing someone else in is too high. Most other squad roles are so competitive that there is no pathway from the academy to the first-team available. It's a pretty tightly run operation. Beyond that, certain players in the first team, that can't nail down a starting role are utilised in countless different positions, making them useful to Slot in the aggregate. Anyone who fails to make a positive impact in the squad across the season will have questions to answer of themselves. Gomez will be set an ultimatum One of those latter players is Joe Gomez, a player whose commitment to the Reds should never be in doubt, but whose future is going to be under intense scrutiny if he's unable to get out of his slump. While the Englishman might well be just as frustrated as the fans are when it comes to his injuries, the fact is that his fitness is increasingly becoming a problem and the situation is getting untenable. Of course, the defender's struggles aren't anything new, he tore his ACL in 2015, had extensive achilles problems in 2016, had ankle surgery in the 2018/19 season and he had patellar issues in the 2020/21 season. His misfortune with fitness has been well-documented in his 10 year stay with us. But the what seems to have been the most damning thing for his Liverpool career so far, is that since he picked up an injury in pre-season, with Gomez one of the three centre-halves the Reds currently have, the decision has been made to try and bring in two new defenders this summer, not just one. That will give Arne Slot five options to fill the two centre-back roles in the starting XI, meaning one of them is almost guaranteed to not feature in a match, unless they're shoehorned into a different place. One of the main reasons why Gomez has been able to stay at Liverpool for so long has been his ability to perform his defensive duties at left-back, right-back or centre-back, whenever he's needed. In times of an injury crisis, he was a player who could compose himself well enough to deliver for the team, regardless of how much football he had played at the time. He's an experienced veteran for us. But now that his own injuries are starting to impact him more and more - 28 games missed last season - the club now feels as though a new player must be brought in. Gomez is now a luxury. Since getting injured earlier this summer, it has now been reported that he is back in training, although for how that will be is still to be understood. But while we all love the player and hope desperately that he'll score a goal at some point this season, he's likely on borrowed time now. Having five centre-backs signifies an ultimatum for someone and it's likely to be Gomez. Of course, Ibrahima Konate might choose to run down his contract this season and leave for free, while it's not out of the realms of possibility that he could leave this summer or in January to give Liverpool a fee. So the likely additions of Marc Guehi and Giovanni Leoni could be to cover all bases, in case the Frenchman decides not to sign a new contract, but if Gomez isn't involves this season, he might well be offered a testimonial and sent on his way, so both parties can go their separate ways. He's contracted until 2027, so he doesn't necessarily have to go anywhere soon, but Liverpool's actions suggest that a decision will have to be made on his future soon and it's likely he'll leave.

Slot says Liverpool set to sign teenage Italian defender but won't comment on Guehi
LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirmed on Thursday an agreement reached with Parma to sign teenage defender Giovanni Leoni. Slot, however, refused to discuss any potential deal for another center back — England international Marc Guehi — and said any comments would need to come from his club, Crystal Palace. The 18-year-old Leoni previously played for Padova and Sampdoria before impressing at Parma after joining in the offseason of 2024. He is an Italy Under-19 international. 'The clubs have agreed (on) a deal but he hasn't signed for us yet,' Slot said of Leoni, 'so the moment when he signs for us, I can go into more detail.' On a possible deal for Guehi, who has one year left on his contract at Palace, Slot was more circumspect. He didn't mention the player's name specifically but did say 'unfortunately he was the captain of the team who we lost against last Sunday' — referring to Liverpool losing to Palace in the Community Shield on Sunday. 'If you want to have any talks about him, you should go to Palace and (manager Oliver) Glasner and ask his opinion about it,' Slot said at a news conference ahead of the first match of Liverpool's Premier League title defense, at home to Bournemouth on Friday. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press

🖐 players in line for breakout Premier League seasons
Whether it be young talents on the cusp of emerging or players with a different kind of point to prove, there are several men coming into the Premier League campaign hoping to break out and show what they can do. We look at five players who fit that bill for 2025/26... Ethan Nwaneri (Arsenal) Sometimes it is worth reminding yourself that the Arsenal teenager only turned 18 earlier this year, given his emergence onto the season as a reliable attacking option for Mikel Arteta. Understandably until now, he has been treated with care and caution but the secret is out and it seems time that he is unleashed on Premier League defences on a rather more regular basis - especially after committing to a new long-term contract. The attacker has all the tools in his arsenal (no pun intended) to be the breakout star of the Premier League season as the Gunners chase down that elusive title victory. Special mention should also go to his team-mate Max Dowman who may be just 15 but dazzled during pre-season and could also be one to watch out for over the course of the campaign - albeit in much smaller doses. Leny Yoro (Manchester United) Arriving from France last summer with a big reputation and for an even bigger fee, the centre-back suffered a frustrating start to life at Old Trafford by picking up a pre-season ankle injury which sidelined him until December. Upon his return, he showed glimpses of what he is capable of but by his own admission, struggled to assert himself in a United side suffering its own issues and upheaval with the mid-season replacement of Erik ten Hag with Ruben Amorim. After a full and successful pre-season under his belt, it is now time for Yoro to assert himself and show exactly why United fought so hard with Real Madrid to sign one of the best defensive prospects in the game. Rayan Cherki (Manchester City) While it feels like the 21-year-old is already something of an established talent having broken into the Lyon team and playing in Ligue 1 and the Champions League at the age of just 16, there is also a sense that he is yet to truly hit the heights expected in those early days. Of course, given his age, there is plenty of time for the playmaker to deliver on that promise and the step up to a higher level under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola could be precisely what is required to bring out the best in him. A clever runner with lethal close control, the France international is also coming off the back of a season in which he scored 12 times and provided 20 assists - it is now time to take his undoubted talents to the next level and prove himself on a bigger stage. Chris Rigg (Sunderland) Sunderland have fought off interest from Manchester United, Liverpool and other established big boys to keep hold of their homegrown talent, who could be set to show what he is all about on the big stage. The midfielder, now 18, became the Black Cats' second youngest player ever when he made his debut and gone from strength to strength since and will likely the 100 career appearances mark this season - a sign of how much he has been trusted so far in his fledgling career. Competition for places has increased but Rigg, who is the complete modern midfielder, will certainly be given opportunities (although having recently returned from injury expect him to be eased back into action) and looks primed to show the world what makes him one of the finest prospects the Academy of Light has ever produced. Estêvão Willian (Chelsea) The Brazilian youngster, who turned 18 this year, looks to be very much the real deal and the next big Seleçao star - justifying the potential £55m Chelsea have committed to him if all of the bonuses in his deal are triggered. He has already found the net for the Blues in pre-season (and against them at the Club World Cup), possesses electrifying pace and is a confident and dangerous dribbler with the ball at his feet. If reports are correct, Chelsea's plan was, understandably, to ease him in and they are not short of attacking options (Estêvão is comfortable both as a No. 10 and on the flank) but his early showings are evidence that they may not be able to keep him under wraps for long. 📸 JOHN THYS - AFP or Licensors
