Blue Jays reinstate George Springer, option hot-hitting Joey Loperfido

New York Times2 hours ago
TORONTO — One of baseball's best comeback stories can now continue. George Springer missed the Toronto Blue Jays' past 16 games after suffering a concussion when he was struck by a pitch before the trade deadline. He'd been among the team's best hitters this year and set a standard for the team's focus on small advantages and baserunning fundamentals. Now he's back. The Jays activated Springer ahead of Saturday's contest against the Texas Rangers, optioning outfielder Joey Loperfido to make room on the roster.

'The last couple of days,' manager John Schneider said, 'he was really champing at the bit to get back here.'
A year after posting the lowest WAR of his career and hitting .220, the 35-year-old Springer is in the midst of a career renaissance. He's hitting the ball harder, on average, than ever before and sits behind just Vladimir Guerrero Jr. among qualified Jays players in OPS (.893).
Toronto went 9-7 in Springer's absence. They scored 45 runs across three games in Colorado, but averaged just 3.6 in the other 13 contests. Injecting Springer, who hit a homer in his final rehab contest on Friday, back into the lineup should boost the team's offensive potential. He's moving back to the leadoff spot for his first game back, though Schneider said the lineup will remain fluid moving forward.
'He's just a guy who's really good at playing baseball and really good at hitting,' hitting coach David Popkins said. 'And a smart hitter. He's one of a kind. He's one of the best outfield hitters ever.'
The Jays missed Springer on the basepaths and in the clubhouse as well, Schneider said. They've dipped back into the league's bottom third in team baserunning in recent weeks. They are also the worst fielding team in baseball since his injury, per Statcast. Springer grades out as one of the team's top baserunners this year. He may not directly help Toronto's fielding, often playing as the team's designated hitter, but he's long been a loud voice in Toronto's clubhouse. It's even easier to lead and motivate others when you're posting numbers, Schneider said.
'George is a big part of it,' Schneider said. 'Both on the bases and at the plate. So trying to just kind of clean those things up.'
The Jays faced a difficult decision upon Springer's return, with no obvious candidate for demotion. Loperfido was ultimately optioned back to Triple A, despite hitting .358 in 30 big-league contests. Schneider called the demotion 'undeserved.' It's unlikely the end of Loperfido's major-league season, though, as he could return as an injury replacement soon or join the team again in September, when rosters expand.
'I can't guarantee that he's coming back in September,' Schneider said. 'But I think it's a pretty strong likelihood if everything stays status quo.'

Hlinka-Gretzky Cup Three Stars: Hextall, Hermansson, and Betts Shine as USA Wins Gold, Canada Takes Bronze

The Hlinka-Gretzky Cup has wrapped up with Team USA taking the gold medal in a thrilling win over Sweden, while Canada took home the bronze against the Finns. This edition of the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup was an exciting tournament, featuring some excellent standout performances, including a number of players who saved their best for last. The gold medal game between USA and Sweden was a back-and-forth affair filled with sloppy play, excellent power play efficiency by the Americans, and a Swedish team that never seemed to get their feet under them. Sweden opened the scoring, but the Americans responded to take the lead. Sweden tied it, and the USA added a couple to pull ahead. Sweden pulled within one, but the Americans added one last goal late to secure the win. Canada took home the bronze in a bit of a ho-hum game, taking a lead early in the first period and never really looking back. The Canadians dominated the pace of play for most of the game, eventually adding an insurance marker in the second period. After Canada lost to the U.S. in the semifinals, they came into the bronze medal game with a business-like approach. Let's take a look at the three stars of the medal round. First Star: Jack Hextall, C, USA No one was buzzing around the ice in this game the way that Jack Hextall was. His speed and skill allowed him to constantly find himself in positions to create something with the puck, buzzing east-west off the puck to collect loose pucks or pick up rebounds. His patience with the puck was an asset on both his first assist and his goal. Hextall added a second helper on a secondary assist on the power play as well. The assist came on a play in which he was able to rotate to the halfwall on the power play, wait for his teammate to attack the back door, and Hextall sent a cross-ice pass right to the doorstep of the crease, where he was able to time Noah Davidson's arrival perfectly for a tap-in. On his goal, Hextall was moving laterally across the top of the circles, drawing two defenders' attention who both went to block the shot at different times before Hextall waited for a clear lane and fired the puck past the sprawling defenders. Every time the Americans felt like the Swedes were beginning to push back, Hextall was thrown over the boards, and Team USA got back some of the momentum. This was a coming-out party for Hextall, and he should be able to build off a leading role at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup to propel him to a strong draft season. Hlinka Gretzky Cup: Canada, USA, Sweden And Finland's Top Players Before Rivalry-Filled Semifinals The Hlinka Gretzky Cup has been quite entertaining so far, and it's about to amp up. Second Star: Elton Hermansson, RW, Sweden Opening the scoring less than a minute into the game and then adding a second goal in period two that pulled the Swedes within one at the time, Hermansson showed off his high-end shooting ability. The game's opening goal came on a rush opportunity where Hermansson simply pulled the puck in to use the defender as a screen before launching a wicked snap shot by the American netminder. His second goal came on a short five-on-three power play, walking down toward the inside edge of the faceoff circle and firing a low-to-high pass by the goalie in an instant. Throughout the third period, Hermansson was one of the Swedes who were buzzing around, trying to even up the game. His speed and skill were on full display as he did everything he could to evade pressure, spin off defenders and create chances for himself and his teammates. Ultimately, Hermansson and the Swedes came up short, but the impressive performance Hermansson put together in the gold medal game and the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup as a whole should be a building block for this season for the Swede. Hlinka Gretzky Cup: Verhoeff and DuPont Headline 12 Players To Watch The unofficial start to the 2026 NHL draft season has arrived as the Hlinka Gretzky Cup kicked off on Monday. Third Star: Gavin Betts, G, Canada In a game where Canada wasn't pristine or overly dynamic offensively, netminder Gavin Betts made 22 saves for the shutout. There weren't many big pushes from the Finns, but whenever they did begin to push, Betts was there. It's often tough for goalies when they aren't staying busy, and there were stretches of play where Betts didn't see a shot for quite some time, especially early in the game, but he remained locked in for when the Finns did make a push. The third period was Betts' busiest, stopping nine shots as Finland looked to try and get onto the board, but Betts stood tall. He consistently cut down angles and avoided letting a bad one in to give Finland life. Betts will look to build on his performance at the HGC, bringing the winning ways to the Kingston Frontenacs. Birmingham City boss Davies on 'deserved' comeback and penalty call

Chris Davies felt his side Birmingham City side deserved their late comeback against Rovers at Ewood Park. The Midlands club had trailed after Todd Cantwell's volley but scored twice in stoppage time to turn the contest on its head. Davies hailed his side's character in a "very difficult situation" after going 1-0 down on the road. 'It was an excellent win,' he said after the final whistle. 'Last minute winners are always something to cherish and savour, especially in front of 7,000 travelling fans. 'It's that intangible character side that is so important in football. We have got belief and we've shown in the early games that we've competed really well. 'I think we have been the better team in all the three games that we've had, league and cup, this season. 'But a goal down away from home at Blackburn Rovers - very, very difficult situation - and then you can lose your head or discipline or start doing different things. 'What I love is we just look like us. We had it in the week [against Sheffield United] with what we felt was an unjust goal against us. 'But we just got back to us, moved the ball quickly, positions were there with real intent, and we deserved to win this game.' The equaliser came from the penalty spot after Sidnei Tavares was judged to have tripped Ethan Laird in the box. When asked if it was the right call, Davies insisted: 'Absolutely, 100 per cent. 'I think when Ethan is driving at that speed - he sort of dropped his shoulder and took his touch in the side - because he's right-footed as well, if he doesn't sort of foul him then he could shoot or lay the ball off to someone. 'So definitely, and I'm really pleased for Ethan because he had to come in to left-back – very unnatural position for him - but he handled it so well up against the winger who is pretty decent. And yeah, a definite penalty.' The Birmingham boss was also quizzed about an incident involving Jay Stansfield, who slotted home the equaliser. 'He said someone had thrown something onto his head so I'm not sure what all that was about, but I don't want to see any of that,' Davies explained. 'It's a shame but I think he's OK, I haven't found out any more about it.'

Eagles vs. Browns: Takeaways from 1st half as Philadelphia holds a 13-12 lead

The defending Super Bowl champions have returned to Lincoln Financial Field for the second week in a row against an AFC North opponent. This time, the retooled Cleveland Browns are the opponent after two days of joint practice sessions. Philadelphia sat the bulk of their starters, but had every player involved in the cornerback competition dressed, and vying for a key role. It was an exciting first half that saw rookie safety Andrew Makuba on the receiving end of two turnovers, while a second-year wide receiver continues to flash. We're looking at takeaways and observations from the first half as the Eagles hold a 13-9 lead over the Browns. Dillon Gabriel With Shedeur Sanders out, the third-round pick got his opportunity to perform in a meaningful game, and the former Oklahoma and Oregon star quarterback didn't disappoint. Gabriel had an ugly interception returned 75 yards for a touchdown, but was otherwise solid. Gabriel finished the first half 13-18 passing, for 143 yards passing (7.9 avg) 0 touchdowns, and one interception with a 72.2 rating and two sacks. Eagles QBs Dorian Thompson-Robinson got the start, but it was rookie Kyle McCord who tossed his first career touchdown pass. McCord is 2-2 passing for 15 yards and the score. Thompson-Robinson was 3-4 passing for eight yards and one sack. Ainias Smith Smith's roster spot isn't guaranteed, and the 2024 late-round pick has a score in back-to-back games. Eagles defense Azeez Ojulari has started to heat up and logged a first-half sack while being a disruptor. Overall, the Eagles' defense allowed 11 first downs, 194 yards, and 6-8 on third downs. Jeremiah Trotter Jr. had five first-half tackles. Eagles CB competition Kelee Ringo and Adoree' Jackson got the start, while Jakorian Bennett saw his first action as an Eagle before suffering an injury. Gabriel was efficient, and Jamari Thrash had four catches for 43 yards in the first half. Jihaad Campbell The rookie had three first-half tackles and his first career sack on Dillon Gabriel. Eagles offensive line Even with Myles Garrett out, Cleveland has a dominant defensive line, and the difference in talent was significant with the Eagles' stars all sitting out.
