A longstanding Jersey politician has announced that he is facing criminal charges.
Deputy Philip Ozouf - who previously served as the island's Assistant Chief Minister - read out a personal statement at the opening of Wednesday's States' meeting to say he is due to appear in the Magistrate's Court at the end of this week.
He says it is in connection with alleged offences under the Immigration Act, relating to the employment of Rwandan nationals.
He added: "Given that this matter is subject to judicial proceedings, I will not be making any further comment at this time - except to confirm that I will cooperate fully with the process."
Deputy Ozouf extended his apologies as one of the island's most experienced politicians.
He said: "As a long-serving member of this Assembly, fully cognisant of the need to uphold the highest standards of conduct in both public and private life, I express regret that this matter has arisen and how it may reflect on this Assembly.
"I express a similar regret to my constituents in St Saviour."
The specific charges faced by Deputy Ozouf are not known.

The UN says Rwanda-backed rebels killed over 300 civilians in Congo in the past month

Rwanda-backed rebels killed at least 319 people over the past month in eastern Congo, the U.N. human rights chief said Wednesday, describing the toll as one of the largest documented in such attacks since the M23 rebels resurfaced in 2022. Citing firsthand accounts, U.N. human rights chief Volker Türk said in a statement that the rebels, backed by members of the Rwandan Defense Force, targeted four villages in North Kivu province's Rutshuru territory between July 9 and July 21. The continuing violence could threaten Qatar-led efforts to get Congo and the rebels to sign a permanent peace deal by the goal of Aug. 18. One of the deal's conditions is the protection of civilians and safe return of millions of people displaced by the conflict. There was no immediate M23 comment. The M23 early this year seized two key cities in eastern Congo in a major escalation, with the help of neighboring Rwandan forces. Congo has long been wracked by deadly conflict in its mineral-rich east, with more than 100 armed groups. The two sides on July 19 signed a declaration of principles in Qatar to end the fighting and commit to a comprehensive peace agreement that would include the restoration of state authorities in key eastern cities controlled by the insurgents. The new U.N. statement said deadly attacks occurred in the days following that signing. 'I am appalled by the attacks on civilians by the M23 and other armed groups" despite the declaration, the U.N. human rights chief said, calling for an immediate end to attacks on civilians.

Trump declares Russia ‘extraordinary threat to US' as he hits India with tariffs

Donald Trump declared Russia an 'extraordinary threat' to the United States on Wednesday as he rolled out his first sanctions over Vladimir Putin's refusal to stop the war in Ukraine. The US president said that he would hit India with an additional 25 per cent trade tariff over its purchase of Russian oil, an important source of income for the Kremlin. The so-called secondary tariff, which brings the total levy against India to 50 per cent, was announced in an executive order signed hours after envoy Steve Witkoff, Mr Trump's top envoy, met Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin for showdown talks. Mr Trump gave Putin until Friday to agree to a ceasefire or face tariffs on Russia's main trading partners. 'I have received additional information from various senior officials on, among other things, the actions of the Government of the Russian Federation with respect to the situation in Ukraine,' Mr Trump said after Mr Witkoff's meeting.

The £700million plan was ditched when Labour won the election. Trump is now pushing ahead with his scheme. A Hope Hostel source told The Sun yesterday: 'We are always ready to provide the best services to the customers.' Rwandan government spokeswoman Yolande Makolo confirmed those arriving in the country would be given support. She added: 'Under the agreement, Rwanda has the ability to approve each individual proposed for resettlement. 'Those approved will be provided with workforce training, healthcare and accommodation support to jump-start their lives in Rwanda.' The initial agreement — signed last month — is for 250 people but can be extended if both countries agree. Britain signed its agreement in 2022. Four UK arrivals were sent to Rwanda but that was under a separate voluntary scheme and did not involve their moving into Hope Hostel. Ismael Bakina, boss of the private operator of the hostel, said the US arrivals would be surprised at the quality of the services offered, adding: 'This is not a prison or a detention centre.'
