GMC on Thursday inaugurated two new high-mast LED lights at Kahilipara and Lokhra. This comprehensive lighting drive is being implemented in collaboration with Guwahati Unnayan Company Ltd. (GUCL) as part of the city's ongoing modernisation efforts.
The project has gained significant momentum with recent inaugurations of high-mast LED lights at multiple locations, including Hengrabari Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) ground, Geeta Nagar field, Bapuji Nagar at Noonmati, Narengi Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) field, and Birkuchi LP School at Narengi.
These new installations bring the total number of operational high-mast LED lights to 50, while construction of the remaining 10 lights is currently underway and will be completed within the next four months.
The current initiative builds upon the existing infrastructure, as the city already has 53 operational high-mast LED street lights. Once the new project is completed, Guwahati will have a robust network of 113 high-mast LED lights strategically positioned throughout the urban landscape.
GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania emphasised the transformative impact of this initiative, stating, "This comprehensive lighting project represents our commitment to making Guwahati a safer, more accessible city for all residents. The installation of high-mast LED lights in every ward, including our cremation grounds, demonstrates our dedication to providing dignified public infrastructure that serves our citizens around the clock.

Sarania said GMC is planning to install high-mast LED lights in around 29 cremation grounds across the city. This initiative aims to provide well-lit and secure environments during evening and night-time rituals, contributing to cleaner and more respectful public spaces for citizens during sensitive times.
Counsellor of ward number 58, Gauri Borah, said, "In my ward, the high-mast LED light is installed inside the compound of Birkuchi LP School.
Earlier in that area, due to the absence of proper lighting, individuals were seen getting involved in unsocial activities like drinking alcohol and gambling, etc., but now I'm hopeful that the high-mast light will prevent such activities."
A resident of Narengi, Himanjit Pathak, said the installation of high-mast LED lights in his locality was much needed to ensure public safety. However, he added that one such light in a ward is not enough; more such lights would be necessary.
The high-mast LED installation is part of GMC's broader lighting programme, which has already made substantial progress in transforming the city's illumination infrastructure. The program's first phase successfully installed 20,657 LED street lights across various streets and by-lanes throughout Guwahati, establishing a foundation for improved urban lighting.
The second phase of the lighting programme is currently in progress, with 5,000 LED lights already installed out of a total target of 12,000 lights planned for this phase.

From 2014 to 2025: How Modi redefined India's political and economic landscape

From policies that further prosperity to driving the economy to reach the fourth spot in the world, PM Modi has worked to make a name for India on the global stage through his ideas and actions in the past 11 years read more Prime Minister Narendra Modi will complete 11 years in office on June 9. The National Democratic Alliance's decade-long governance under PM Modi's vision has been marked by development in both the political and economic landscape. From policies that further prosperity to driving the economy to reach the fourth spot in the world, PM Modi has worked to make a name for India on the global stage through his ideas and actions in the past 11 years. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Here's a look at how this change came to effect: New building for Parliament India has come a long way since the British left in 1947. However, their vestiges remain in the form of buildings and architecture across the country. For 73 years, lawmakers had to draft blueprints of India's development in a British-made structure, that is, the old Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi carries the 'Sengol' in a procession before installing it in the Lok Sabha chamber at the inauguration of the new Parliament building, in New Delhi, Sunday, May 28, 2023. PTI Under PM Modi, the central government changed this. In 2023, the prime minister inaugurated the new Parliament House of India, which now serves as a pillar of the country's heritage. The inauguration ceremony included traditional rituals such as a havan and the installation of the Sengol, a sacred sceptre, behind the Speaker's chair in the Lok Sabha chamber. Rise of BJP at the Centre and in states PM Modi did not just help the Bharatiya Janata Party dominate the centre, but also paved the way for the party to expand its footprint across India. The BJP, along with its ally parties, are now ruling 19 states and two union territories. The latest victory came during the Delhi Assembly Elections in February when the party dethroned the Aam Aadmi Party's rule to make a comeback in the national capital. Party workers and supporters celebrating BJP's success in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh state assembly elections outside the BJP headquarter, in New Delhi on Monday. PTI This expansion of NDA governance marks a historic milestone, with the alliance now overseeing a population of approximately 920 million people, solidifying its dominance in India's political landscape. End of the Congress-led political power In 2014, a new age of politics was heralded in India. PM Modi's BJP ended the Indian National Congress's 10 years of rule under former prime minister Manmohan Singh. The Grand Old Party has ever since been the largest Opposition in India. BJP has now emerged as India's dominant political force, securing consecutive majorities in the 2014, 2019 and 2024 general elections. This period marked a shift from a multi-party system to a more centralised political landscape, with the BJP consolidating support among various social groups, including rural voters, women, and marginalised communities. In fact, PM Modi is the first prime minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to have won three consecutive parliamentary elections. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD End of Article 370 In 2019, the central government took the bold step of abrogating Article 370 that gave Jammu and Kashmir its special status and split the region into two Union Territories – J&K and Ladakh. Supporters wave BJP's flags at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's helicopter, during a public meeting ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, at Kartar Nagar in New Delhi. PTI The abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 significantly transformed Jammu and Kashmir by integrating it fully into India's constitutional framework. This move enabled the application of central laws, such as the Right to Education and land acquisition compensation statutes, which were previously inapplicable. One nation, one tax PM Modi revolutionised India's taxation system by introducing 'One Nation, One Tax' that established the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which was implemented on July 1, 2017. This landmark reform unified the country's complex tax structure by subsuming various central and state taxes into a single tax, aiming to simplify the taxation process and promote economic integration. The GST was officially launched at midnight on June 30, 2017, with a special session held in the Central Hall of Parliament. Finance Bill of 2017 In 0217, the central government under the BJP unveiled the Finance Bill, which is seen as a significant legislative measure introduced in India to implement the financial proposals of the administration. It encompassed over 40 amendments across various laws, aiming to enhance transparency, curb black money, and streamline governance. Key provisions included making Aadhaar mandatory for filing income tax returns and obtaining a Permanent Account Number (PAN), imposing a cap of Rs 2 lakh on cash transactions to discourage unaccounted money, and removing caps on corporate donations to political parties while mandating anonymous contributions through electoral bonds. The bill also helped to restructure several tribunals, granting the central government greater control over their functioning.

RBI policy impact: Sensex soars 800 points, Nifty tops 25,000 as surprise 50 bps rate cut lifts Indian stock market

RBI policy impact on Indian stock market: Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty ended higher on June 6, reversing early losses after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) surprised markets with a larger-than-expected 50 basis points repo rate cut in its June monetary policy review, a move that sparked optimism across sectors and lifted investor sentiment. The RBI-led Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), under Governor Sanjay Malhotra, also shifted the policy stance from 'Accommodative' to 'Neutral'. The benchmark Sensex climbed over 800 points to its intra-day high of 82,299.89, while the Nifty added over 250 points to its day's high of 25,029.50. The positive momentum extended to the broader markets as well, with the Nifty Midcap index rising 0.8 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap index advancing 0.6 per cent. Meanwhile, the India VIX declined another 2 per cent, indicating reduced volatility expectations. In a further signal of confidence, the central bank revised its CPI inflation forecast for FY26 downward to 3.70 per cent from 4 per cent, while retaining the GDP growth projection at 6.5 per cent. The dovish policy tone triggered strong buying in rate-sensitive sectors. The Nifty Realty index surged 4.3 per cent, becoming the top-performing sector, as investors cheered the supportive outlook for housing demand and affordability. The Nifty Financial Services index rose by almost 2 per cent, while Nifty Bank added 1.5 per cent and Nifty Auto rose 1 per cent. Other gainers included the Nifty Metal index, up over 1 per cent, and the Nifty Oil and Gas index, which added 0.4 per cent. However, defensive sectors like Nifty IT and Nifty Pharma closed in the red as investors rotated into cyclical and growth-oriented plays. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, offered a nuanced take on the development. 'While the 50 basis point rate cut is growth-positive, it could be marginally negative for the markets in the near-term. This move appears to front-load the rate easing cycle, and the shift in stance to 'Neutral' signals that further cuts may not come soon unless conditions change dramatically,' he said. He added that bank margins could face short-term pressure due to the aggressive cut, though any weakness may be offset by the pick-up in credit demand and improved loan growth over time. According to Sonam Srivastava, Founder and Fund Manager at Wright Research PMS, the unexpected 50 basis point rate cut highlights the RBI's growing focus on stimulating economic growth amidst moderating inflation and global monetary easing. 'With real rates still elevated and domestic demand showing uneven trends, this move is intended to unlock credit growth, revive private sector investment, and ease repayment burdens for borrowers,' she said. Srivastava also noted that key sectors such as housing, auto, banking, and infrastructure are likely to benefit as transmission picks up pace. She added, 'The move improves the medium-term outlook for consumption and capital expenditure. Bond markets, especially in the long-duration segment, are expected to rally, setting the stage for a more accommodative environment going into the second half of the year.' The RBI's bold and unexpected rate cut delivered a clear message of pro-growth intent, reinforcing confidence in India's monetary policy trajectory. While the move triggered gains across equities, especially in interest rate-sensitive sectors, analysts remain watchful of the evolving credit environment and transmission trends. With inflation expectations cooling and global easing cycles underway, the RBI's pivot could support a broad-based recovery, even as markets weigh the near-term implications for banking margins and liquidity.

Trump-Musk public spat: Tesla share price crashes 14%; here's how Elon Musk took a financial hit

Tesla share price crashed more than 14% on Thursday as the public feud between CEO Elon Musk and US President Trump intensified. Tesla shares slumped as much as 14.26% to close at $284.70 apiece, contributing to a broader decline in tech stocks. Tesla share price has now declined in four of the last five trading sessions. Since the public spat began, the electric vehicle (EV) maker has seen its market capitalization shrink by approximately $150 billion. Musk has recently stepped up his criticism of the president's sweeping tax and spending legislation. In response, Trump alleged that Musk's opposition stems from the bill's removal of certain tax incentives for electric vehicle purchases, Reuters reported. Thursday's selloff in Tesla shares followed Trump's threats to revoke federal subsidies for Musk-led ventures after Musk voiced concerns over the administration's economic policies. The slump in Tesla shares led a fall in Musk's net worth by roughly $27 billion to $388 billion, according to Forbes. The sharp decline in Tesla share price weighed heavily on the Nasdaq Composite, which dropped 162.04 points, or 0.83%, to close at 19,298.45. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.25% to 42,319.74, while the S&P 500 declined 0.53% to 5,939.30. However, Tesla still remains the most valuable automobile company worldwide. Through Wednesday, Tesla's market value stood at about $1 trillion, well above Toyota Motor's $290 billion. Tesla stock has been under pressure since late last year, sliding nearly 20% over the past five sessions and almost 25% year-to-date. However, over the past one year, Tesla share price has rallied 63%, while the EV stock has jumped by a staggering 383% in five years. (With inputs from Reuters)
